How to Turn Your Microwave into a Camera | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #Security

You can turn a microwave into a camera and I’ll teach you how in a minute, but before I do, let me share this news item. In a recent interview with a reporter from the Bergen Record, Kellyanne Conway was asked about surveillance. She responded: “There are many ways to surveil each other now, unfortunately. There was an article this week that talked about how you can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets, any number of different ways. And microwaves that turn into cameras, et cetera. So we know that that is just a fact of modern life.”

[session] Docker and VM | @DevOpsSummit #VM #AI #DevOps #Serverless

Virtualization over the past years has become a key strategy for IT to acquire multi-tenancy, increase utilization, develop elasticity and improve security. And virtual machines (VMs) are quickly becoming a main vehicle for developing and deploying applications. The introduction of containers seems to be bringing another and perhaps overlapped solution for achieving the same above-mentioned benefits. Are a container and a virtual machine fundamentally the same or different? And how? Is one technically superior to the other? What about performance and security? Does IT need either one, or both?

7 Spices of #ContinuousDelivery Pipeline | @DevOpsSummit #CD #DevOps

A Continuous Delivery pipeline as part of an Agile transformation is like spices in a meal. Without them, the food is bland and worthless. On the other hand, the right blend of spices will leave you craving more, stimulating your senses and energizing you. But as any good cook will tell you, it can be a bit difficult to find the exact right blend of spices for a specific dish.

Measuring Technical Debt | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #APM #Monitoring

If technical debt were like monetary debt, it would be hard to keep track of it unless you checked in manually. The only way many people find out their checking account is running out of funds is by logging in and checking the balance — or, worse, having a check bounce or a debit card declined. But measuring technical debt can be more automatic. That’s because, unlike your bank account, your IT infrastructure can be monitored on an ongoing basis with specialized tools, and you can get notified on critical health metrics. In turn, you can use monitoring data to gain information about technical debt. In other words, you don’t have to do a manual audit to know when something is going awry in your data center. You don’t have to wait for a server to go down before learning about a problem. Incident Management tools provide that information for you. By extension, they also offer a way for you to take stock of your technical debt without having to measure things tediously by hand.

To Bot, or Not to Bot | @ThingsExpo #AI #IoT #M2M #MachineLearning

I developed a bot. Last weekend I opened the website https://rundexter.com/bot and developed a bot, which I then integrated with Twilio for messaging. I named it BeccaBot after our daughter. Just to be clear, her name is Becca, not Bot. It was a bot designed purely to freak-out our daughter. It was highly successful. Here are some things I learned. You tell the bot to look for specific words or even phrases and then act upon them in specified ways. You can answer with text, or a website link, or an image, etc. You can ask for a name, and program the bot to remember the name.

[session] #DeepLearning, Trading & #FinTech | @CloudExpo #BigData #AI #ML

Deep learning has been very successful in social sciences and specially areas where there is a lot of data. Trading is another field that can be viewed as social science with a lot of data. With the advent of Deep Learning and Big Data technologies for efficient computation, we are finally able to use the same methods in investment management as we would in face recognition or in making chat-bots. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Gaurav Chakravorty, co-founder and Head of Strategy Development at qplum, will discuss the transformational impact of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in making trading a scientific process. This focus on learning a hierarchical set of concepts is truly making investing a scientific process, a utility.

Both Sides of Enterprise Mobility | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Mobile #DigitalTransformation

Enterprise mobility has become table stakes in the world of business. The ability to access current information at any time, from anywhere, on any device has really become a cliché. The familiarity we all have with smartphones and wireless access, actually obscures the true difficulty of developing and executing an effective corporate mobile strategy. This reality is driven by the fact that companies must actually have two mobile strategies.

OILS, Bots, AI and Clogged Arteries | @CloudExpo #AI #Cloud #DigitalTransformation

When a person has clogged arteries it restricts and reduces the flow of oxygen rich blood through their body. Clogged arteries also greatly increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks and even death. In the digital age the equivalent of oxygen rich blood for organizations is the data running through an information logistics system. Healthy and digitally mature organizations have in place an optimized information logistics system (OILS), that enables data to flow unencumbered and efficiently throughout an organization in digital-time. Data must flow in digital-time, a speed which is fast enough to satisfy even impatient digital consumers.

Testing When the API Isn't Ready | @Cloud #API #Cloud #Virtualization

With the complexity of today’s applications, it’s easy to end up in a situation where all of the pieces of your code aren’t ready at the same time. As a developer, you might be waiting for a third-party API to get updated, a partner organization to finish their code, or other teams in your organization to have a component ready to start testing against. This can be a drag on your organization’s entire release schedule, as testing is backed up waiting for all the pieces to be finished.

The Truth of Patent Data Quality | @BigDataExpo #BigData #Analytics #MachineLearning

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently announced an expansion of PatentsView, its visualization tool for US patents. First launched a few years ago, the intent behind the tool was to make 40 years of patent filing data available for free to those interested in examining “the dynamics of inventor patenting activity over time.” In spite of being limited to patents (not applications) and with a focus only on the US, it offers some interesting visualizations around locations and citations.

AWS Broke the Internet Again or, Better, a Typo | @CloudExpo #AI #ML #DL

Amazon Web Services (AWS) broke the Internet again or better “a typo”. On February 28, 2017, an Amazon S3 service disruption in AWS’ oldest region US-EAST-1 shuts down several major websites and services like Slack, Trello, Quora, Business Insider, Coursera and Time Inc. Other users were reporting that they were also unable to control devices which were connected via the Internet of Things since IFTTT was also down. Those kinds of disruptions are becoming more and more business critical for today’s digital economy. To prevent these situations, cloud users should always consider the shared responsibility model in the public cloud. However, there are also ways where Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help. This article describes that an AI-defined Infrastructure respectively an AI-powered IT management system can help to avoid service disruptions of public cloud providers.

JavaScript Errors | @DevOpsSummit @Dynatrace #JavaScript #AI #WebPerf

These days we are moving more and more logic towards the user into the browser to achieve higher performance and better user experience. There are Single Page Application frameworks like AngularJS, React, Ember and others supporting this trend. If it works, everything is fine. But with this trend a JavaScript error can become a website killer. What does this mean? Below you can see the same page twice, but depending on the browser used, you get a product list from which you can make a selection…or NOT! The difference is the result of a simple JavaScript error!

Five Steps to #MeteorJS Monitoring | @DevOpsSummit @Sematext #JavaScript

Meteor is a full-stack JavaScript platform for developing modern web and mobile applications. It includes developer tools, websockets, MongoDB integration, and a package manager. Atmosphere.js is the Meteor package manager. Unfortunately, it doesn’t list many Meteor monitoring solutions. Luckily, thanks to the Meteor npm integration, it is possible to use npm packages for monitoring Meteor apps with npm based monitoring solutions, such as SPM for Node.js monitoring. SPM for Node.js collects key Node.js metrics such as Event Loop, Garbage Collection, CPU, Memory and web services metrics. All metrics are organized in out-of-the-box charts, which can be put on additional dashboards and placed next to performance charts for other parts of the application stack and their logs for doing metric-logs correlations.

Difference Between Big Data and Internet of Things | @ExpoDX @Schmarzo #BigData #IoT #IIoT #DigitalTransformation

A recent argument with folks whose intelligence I hold in high regard (like Tom, Brandon, Wei, Anil, etc.) got me thinking about the following question: What does it mean, as a vendor, to say that you support the Internet of Things (IOT) from an analytics perspective? I think the heart of that question really boils down to this: What are the differences between big data (which is analyzing large amounts of mostly human-generated data to support longer-duration use cases such as predictive maintenance, capacity planning, customer 360 and revenue protection) and IOT (which is aggregating and compressing massive amounts of low latency / low duration / high volume machine-generated data coming from a wide variety of sensors to support real-time use cases such as operational optimization, real-time ad bidding, fraud detection, and security breach detection)?
