Cloud Bursting with @AvereSystems | @CloudEXPO #AI #Serverless #DataCenter #DevOps #DigitalTransformation

When it comes to cloud computing, the ability to turn massive amounts of compute cores on and off on demand sounds attractive to IT staff, who need to manage peaks and valleys in user activity. With cloud bursting, the majority of the data can stay on premises while tapping into compute from public cloud providers, reducing risk and minimizing need to move large files. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Scott Jeschonek, Director of Product Management at Avere Systems, discussed the IT and business benefits that cloud bursting provides, including increased compute capacity, lower IT investment, financial agility, and, ultimately, faster time-to-market.

[slides] Sensor-2-Server Access Layer | @ThingsExpo #IoT #IIoT #M2M #API

The idea of comparing data in motion (at the sensor level) to data at rest (in a Big Data server warehouse) with predictive analytics in the cloud is very appealing to the industrial IoT sector. The problem Big Data vendors have, however, is access to that data in motion at the sensor location. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Scott Allen, CMO of FreeWave, discussed how as IoT is increasingly adopted by industrial markets, there is going to be an increased demand for sensor data from the outermost (access) layer of the network.

Beating the Data Deluge | @CloudExpo #NAS #BigData #DataCenter #Storage

IDC estimates that the digital universe is doubling every two years. That means the need for data storage is increasing at the same rate. This exponential demand is no match for traditional vertical-scaling storage architectures. The resulting bottlenecks significantly reduce performance, and trying to store so much data would require prohibitively expensive server scale-out.

[session] #FogComputing & #DigitalTransformation | @CloudExpo #IoT #BigData

The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, will demonstrate how to move beyond today's coding paradigm and share the must-have mindsets for removing complexity from the development process, accelerate application delivery times, and ensure that developers will become heroes (not bottlenecks) in the IoT revolution.

SSH User Keys Now a C-Suite Issue | @CloudExpo #Cloud #BigData #Security

With so much on their plates, most C-level executives don’t have the bandwidth to think about SSH user keys. It would be much simpler to leave such details to the IT department – but that would be a mistake. Why? Because SSH means access – to an organization’s servers and data. The creation of SSH user keys is not a controlled process, which means that someone can create credentials without oversight. That fact should be enough to get the C-suite’s attention.

One Size Does Not Fit All: Agile in the Public Sector | @DevOpsSummit @CollabNet #Agile #DevOps

CollabNet has a long history helping the federal market build quality software at speed, including the Department of Defense (DoD), which is, believe it or not, one of the most active software developers in the world. Federal software needs range widely — from military and defense systems, to communications, command and control and operations — so you can imagine how complex the development and delivery processes have become. With so many layers of DoD software development, corralling the systems into a manageable workflow is an enormous task, and that’s where Forge.mil comes in.

Heterogeneous World and #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit @CollabNet #Scrum

Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor – all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organizations must focus on what is most relevant to deliver value, reduce IT complexity, create more repeatable agile-based processes and leverage increasingly secure and stable, cloud-based infrastructure platforms.

Four Key Takeaways for Application Performance and Monitoring | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps

Designing for performance is absolutely essential; but runtime is so crazy a variable that we can reasonably blame too-early optimization for a non-negligible chunk of lousy UX and unmaintainable code. The latest Guide to Performance and Monitoring covers both the static and dynamic, the verifiable and the unknowable sides of building and maintaining performant applications.

Patterns and Anti-Patterns | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Microservices #ContinuousDelivery

In the world of DevOps there are ‘known good practices’ – aka ‘patterns’ – and ‘known bad practices’ – aka ‘anti-patterns.' Many of these patterns and anti-patterns have been developed from real world experience, especially by the early adopters of DevOps theory; but many are more feasible in theory than in practice, especially for more recent entrants to the DevOps scene. In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit at 18th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps Conference Chair Andi Mann, panelists discussed the patterns and anti-patterns of DevOps, and what it means to ‘do the right thing’ in a DevOps way, but in the real world.
