Just to explain a little about what we mean by continuous design. It’s basically bringing together the entire organization and a unifying design in operations. It’s taking what we are doing in DevOps and expanding it to include product, design and support. It lets the whole organization really have an agile conversation with a market and with its customers. The issue that we face is that we live in a service world now. The point is no longer delivering products like cars coming off an assembly line. It’s much more about responding to our customers and having relationships with them. This is happening in a world that is more and more complex, while less and less is in your control. We can’t figure everything out in advance. We have to have the ability to respond to the unexpected. We have to be able to do that at every level.
Software as a Service (SaaS) is a model that has become a popular choice for deploying enterprise applications, delivering efficiencies and value to organizations in many ways. The benefits SaaS solutions deliver include not only avoiding the major resource drain and licensing costs associated with deploying business-critical software across the organization, they also relieve IT from ongoing maintenance tasks associated with on-premise deployments, such as performing upgrades, installing patches and managing availability. Moreover, SaaS can enhance flexibility and scalability for enterprise applications and workloads. Of course, while these benefits gained from adopting SaaS solutions in the enterprise are significant, they must nevertheless be balanced against potential risks. In particular, consideration must always be given as to whether cloud applications are sufficiently secure.
Initially, we came across ransomware which exploited the entire system and just restricted you from interacting with your own device, later on requiring you to pay dollars if you want to go back and use your computer. And then it started becoming obsolete because an end-user. People were asking themselves: “That is my computer, would I pay $100 for it? If I don't really have data, I’d better format my PC and start all over again.” So, that strategy – locking access to computers, started becoming obsolete. What did the bad guys do? They realized that the previous strategy was only good when the data that computer was holding was valuable. So they started asking ransom for the data, and that's what they're doing now.
Docker Compose is the solution provided by Docker to help users package and deploy a set of containers that are running together. The containers are identified either by its image name or by the ‘build’ configuration keyword that asks Compose to build it before to deploy it. The typical use case is that a developer is working on a new image, but he/she needs all of its dependencies to make it run. So he/she enters in the following cycle: make modifications, commit, and restart the containers using the ‘docker-compose up’ command… until the feature is done. Fine! Currently, the preferred method of data protection of cloud giants, such as Google, is to replicate the data across different locations (i.e., data centers), rather than performing a true back up. This is done because a true back up seems logistically too complicated given the amount of data these giants store. These companies have turned to replicated data because, the assumed risk of all replications crashing simultaneously are extremely slim. This risk assumption may be accurate but it does not take into account unintentional data destruction.
