Let us face it, there are many technological innovations taking place right now and we’re not short of buzzwords. Some years ago it was the cloud, last year was Big Data and this year it seems to be the Internet of Things. Beneath all the noise, what matters is whether these things are truly game changers or just noise. Let's take a look at the reality. Back in the days of our ancestors, the Neanderthals, there was probably a lot of hype around as well. New spear design, new flint stones (not the cartoons), or arrowheads must have made waves. This passed down the ages and possibly a few thousand years ago created hype around things like the invention of the wheel and irrigation systems. A few hundred years ago, innovation moved more into warfare and technology inventions such as better weapon design, the invention of gunpowder and maybe better ways to identify disease.
Panzura has announced the results of its “State of Manufacturing Cross Site-CAD Collaboration” survey conducted at SOLIDWORKS World 2016. The survey details the top challenges that manufacturing professionals face when working within Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and design applications across sites. More than 5,000 manufacturing professionals attended SOLIDWORKS World 2016, with a significant portion participating in the “State of Manufacturing Cross-Site CAD Collaboration” survey. The survey revealed that many organizations struggle collaborating across locations with CAD applications due to long wait times for files to update, incorrect data, data loss, or versioning and replication issues.
Managed IT services wasn't even a phrase until the early 2000s and, today, there are over 75,000 IT service providers in North America alone. NHK, Japan Broadcasting, will feature the upcoming @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley in a special 'Internet of Things' and smart technology documentary that will be filmed on the expo floor between November 3 to 5, 2015, in Santa Clara. NHK is the sole public TV network in Japan equivalent to the BBC in the UK and the largest in Asia with many award-winning science and technology programs. Japanese TV is producing a documentary about IoT and Smart technology and will be covering @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley. The program, to be aired during the peak viewership season of the year, will have a major impact on the industry in Japan. The film's director is writing a scenario to fit in the story in the next few days will be turned in to the network.
Whether intentional or accidental, data leaks are a huge concern for organizations. And it has been for years. Going back to a 2004 survey from an IT security forum hosted by Qualys, found that 67% of security executives do not have controls in place to prevent data leakage, A December 2006 survey, Boston-based researchers Simon Management Group noted that some 78% of respondents said they were "very concerned" about data exposure. A 2010 article published by Trustwave on CSOonline.com said that 65% of leakage occurs due to the following combined methods: Microsoft SMB sharing, Remote Access Applications, and Native FTP clients.
There’s a new kid on the block of disruptive technology. Blockchain. A day doesn’t go by that you can’t find numerous articles about it. Topics range from how JP Morgan is making significant investments in exploring the technology, to the Republican GOP using blockchain to allow online voting. It’s definitely a hot topic of discussion. At times it sounds like blockchain is replacing cloud in discussions as the technology panacea that will solve all problems. On the flip side, one of the first statements I invariably hear when blockchain enters the conversation with clients is, “We’re not interested in Bitcoin.” For many, the terms blockchain and Bitcoin are synonymous.

Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. Docker Cloud is a hosted service for Docker Container Management, originally based on Tutum Cloud, which was acquired by Docker in October 2015. Sematext supported the deployment of Sematext Docker Agent on Tutum Cloud from the get-go, so naturally we were quick to add support for Docker Cloud as well. Docker Cloud is a container management service that supports multiple cloud providers such as Amazon, DigitalOcean, IBM Softlayer, MS Azure and Packet.net. This makes it much easier to switch Docker deployments to different cloud providers or use a mix of providers including on-premises nodes for hybrid cloud applications. The user interface in Docker Cloud makes it easy to manage nodes on all supported cloud platforms and is able to deploy application stacks in containers, defined in a “Stack YAML” file. This Stack files are very similar to Docker Compose files, but with additional options, e.g. to define deployment strategies for the containers. The graphical user interface helps to view and modify container configurations.
