DevOps the Cloud Enabler | @DevOpsSummit @Datical #DevOps #IoT #Microservices

You are moving to the Cloud. The question is not if, it’s when. Now that your competitors are in the cloud and lapping you, your “when” better hurry up and get here. But saying and doing are two different things. In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 18th Cloud Expo, Robert Reeves, CTO of Datical, will explain how DevOps can be your onramp to the cloud. By adopting simple, platform independent DevOps strategies, you can accelerate your move to the cloud. Spoiler Alert: He will also make sure you don’t forget the database in your adoption of DevOps and the cloud.

IoT and #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #InternetOfThings

Let us face it, there are many technological innovations taking place right now and we’re not short of buzzwords. Some years ago it was the cloud, last year was Big Data and this year it seems to be the Internet of Things. Beneath all the noise, what matters is whether these things are truly game changers or just noise. Let's take a look at the reality. Back in the days of our ancestors, the Neanderthals, there was probably a lot of hype around as well. New spear design, new flint stones (not the cartoons), or arrowheads must have made waves. This passed down the ages and possibly a few thousand years ago created hype around things like the invention of the wheel and irrigation systems. A few hundred years ago, innovation moved more into warfare and technology inventions such as better weapon design, the invention of gunpowder and maybe better ways to identify disease.

Emerging IoT Markets | @ThingsExpo @UnigmaApp #IoT #M2M #DigitalTransformation

Managed IT services wasn't even a phrase until the early 2000s and, today, there are over 75,000 IT service providers in North America alone. By 2020, there are going to be 50 billion connected devices, and managed IT services might cease to be a phrase again. Unless the MPSs adapt to the new, connected world, we are going to see diminishing returns in that space. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Kirill Bensonoff, CEO of Unigma, will discuss the different opportunities IoT will create for MSPs and IT service providers – from on-site services, to monitoring, managing and consulting.

Time Series Data of IoT By @Trendalyze | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #BigData

IoT generates lots of temporal data. But how do you unlock its value? You need to discover patterns that are repeatable in vast quantities of data, understand their meaning, and implement scalable monitoring across multiple data streams in order to monetize the discoveries and insights. Motif discovery and deep learning platforms are emerging to visualize sensor data, to search for patterns and to build application that can monitor real time streams efficiently. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Dave Watson, CTO and Co-Founder of Trendalyze, will discuss real world IoT projects from UK environmental monitoring using Mosquitto, Node-RED, Kafka, Spark, MLlib and R.

Beyond DevOps: Security vs. Speed? | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps

Fail fast, fail often. Yeah, but the first failure blew up the satellite. Well, this is just a photo-sharing app..not rocket science. Okay, but your photos are accessed by users who have passwords that they probably use for other things..and aren't some photos as important as satellites? Several problems arise when the harm of software failure cannot be treated as an unbound variable. Here are some thoughts on two. I'll write more on two more (one cognitive, one computational) later.

Simplifying the IoT Conversation | @ThingsExpo #IoT #DigitalTransformation

We’ve all been in those sales meetings. The sales person kicks off the meeting by welcoming everyone and introducing the topic of discussion. Then the pre-sales expert drags everyone through their 100-slide PowerPoint deck with enough buzzwords and confusing phrases (at 9 point font, of course) to dull even the most engaged person. I call these types of presentations the “Jabberwocky Strategy” because they remind me of one of my kids’ favorite poems, “Jabberwocky”, by Lewis Carroll.

Plugging Data Leaks By @PSilvas | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Security

Whether intentional or accidental, data leaks are a huge concern for organizations. And it has been for years. Going back to a 2004 survey from an IT security forum hosted by Qualys, found that 67% of security executives do not have controls in place to prevent data leakage, A December 2006 survey, Boston-based researchers Simon Management Group noted that some 78% of respondents said they were "very concerned" about data exposure. A 2010 article published by Trustwave on CSOonline.com said that 65% of leakage occurs due to the following combined methods: Microsoft SMB sharing, Remote Access Applications, and Native FTP clients.

Blockchain: Why It’s So Much More than Bitcoin By @EFeatherston | @ThingsExpo #IoT

There’s a new kid on the block of disruptive technology. Blockchain. A day doesn’t go by that you can’t find numerous articles about it. Topics range from how JP Morgan is making significant investments in exploring the technology, to the Republican GOP using blockchain to allow online voting. It’s definitely a hot topic of discussion. At times it sounds like blockchain is replacing cloud in discussions as the technology panacea that will solve all problems. On the flip side, one of the first statements I invariably hear when blockchain enters the conversation with clients is, “We’re not interested in Bitcoin.” For many, the terms blockchain and Bitcoin are synonymous.

Cloud Orchestration From @Pythian | @CloudExpo #Ansible #Puppet #DevOps

Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Alex Lovell-Troy, Director of Solutions Engineering at Pythian, will present a roadmap that can be leveraged by any organization to plan, analyze, evaluate, and execute on moving from configuration management tools to cloud orchestration tools. He will address the three major cloud vendors as well as some tools that will work with any cloud.

2016 State of DevOps Survey By @RealGeneKim | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps

Without a doubt, one of the projects in my career that I’ve learned the most from is the State of DevOps Report. This is a project that I’ve worked on with Jez Humble, Dr. Nicole Forsgren, and the team at Puppet Labs, where we’ve surveyed over 20,000 technology professionals to understand the health and habits of organizations adopting DevOps. This is the research that allowed us to characterize the benefits of being a high performing technology organization, as well as how to become one. If you've seen these statistics, the State of DevOps report is where it came from.

Docker Cloud Monitoring and Logging By @Sematext | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Containers

Docker Cloud is a hosted service for Docker Container Management, originally based on Tutum Cloud, which was acquired by Docker in October 2015. Sematext supported the deployment of Sematext Docker Agent on Tutum Cloud from the get-go, so naturally we were quick to add support for Docker Cloud as well. Docker Cloud is a container management service that supports multiple cloud providers such as Amazon, DigitalOcean, IBM Softlayer, MS Azure and Packet.net. This makes it much easier to switch Docker deployments to different cloud providers or use a mix of providers including on-premises nodes for hybrid cloud applications. The user interface in Docker Cloud makes it easy to manage nodes on all supported cloud platforms and is able to deploy application stacks in containers, defined in a “Stack YAML” file. This Stack files are very similar to Docker Compose files, but with additional options, e.g. to define deployment strategies for the containers. The graphical user interface helps to view and modify container configurations.
