Illumio has extended the capabilities of Adaptive Security Platform (ASP)™ through integration with Microsoft’s Active Directory groups. The new capability, known as Adaptive User Segmentation, dynamically calculates and provisions connectivity rules based on user identity to prevent unauthorized communications with, and access to, any Illumio-protected applications. Illumio ASP now can govern how hundreds of millions of users connect to applications across data centers, clouds or hybrid-cloud compute environments.

Containers are rapidly rushing to the fore. They’re the darling du jour of DevOps and it’s a rare conversation on microservices that doesn’t invoke it’s BFF, containers. SDx Central’s recent report on containers found only 17% of respondents that were not considering containers at all. That’s comparable with Kubernetes’ State of the Container World Jan 2016 assertion that 71% of folks were actively using containers, though Kubernetes’ found a much higher percentage of those who say they’re running containers in production (50%) than SDx found (7%).

Broadcom Limited has announced its new family of Emulex® Gen 6 Fibre Channel host bus adapters to address the demanding enterprise data storage requirements of flash storage arrays, virtualized and cloud datacenters. Data centers are rapidly deploying flash arrays to accelerate storage performance, but have ended up moving the performance bottleneck from the hard drive to the storage network. Gen 6 Fibre Channel alleviates the network bottleneck and enables data centers to get maximum ROI from their flash storage investments. Using industry-standard TPC-H benchmarks, research firm Demartek found that when Emulex Gen 6 HBAs were connected to an all-flash array, data warehousing transactions were completed in one-fourth the time compared to 8GFC (Gen 4) HBAs, and approximately half the time compared to Gen 5 (16GFC) HBAs, improving business operations and time-to-revenue.

451 Research recently published its 2016 Enterprise Storage Outlook in which both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft become top 5 enterprise storage vendors by 2017. Further, AWS surges from 6th place to 2nd place while NetApp plummets from 2nd place to 6th place. Spending on public cloud storage over doubles between 2015 and 2017 while spending on on-premises storage falls over 17%.
The rise of microservices has enabled teams to branch out from developing for innately complicated, monolithic applications and work with small, flexible and comparatively simple components. But when these components (numbering anywhere from the hundreds to the thousands for one application) need to work together, traditional tools and release processes can be lacking. Organizations need to adopt new delivery models, release strategies and tooling that can handle this new multitude of services and their dependencies.
“Today’s generation of customers are always connected and well informed, but businesses are lagging behind in terms of both understanding and engaging their customers across all their channels in ways that are both relevant and consistent,” said Brian Walker, chief strategy officer, SAP Hybris. Eliminating any “availability gap” is the aim; however, cost and lack of skills are often a roadblock.
What made move 37 so interesting is that no one expected it. It was early in game two of the million-dollar Google DeepMind Challenge Match, and AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence (AI) system developed by Google, placed its 19th stone on a part of the game board that no human Go master would have considered. In my 30-years in the high tech industry I have often heard the business maxim, "Develop a business strategy first, and then find the technology to support it." This well-worn business doctrine, I have come to believe in this age of digital transformation, is wrong and it is time to repudiate it. Let me support my argument by first asking a few questions. What came first e-commerce or the Internet? What came first mobile commerce, or wireless mobile communications? What came first the commercial airline industry or the airplane? What came first armored knights being used as shock troops, or stirrups? Stirrups of course! Technology innovations have a long history of appearing first, and then doctrines evolving slowly later. What we are learning, however, is if your outdated business doctrines are dictating the speed of your technology adoptions - you are in big trouble! The world is moving much too fast and organizations must now align the tempo of their business doctrine evolution with the pace of technology innovations and customer adoptions.
