According to IDC, 80 percent of enterprise IT organizations will commit to hybrid cloud architectures by 2017. This has significant implications for the way enterprises need to organize themselves. All enterprises, not just those on the cutting edge, need to adapt their business models to leverage services that are made possible by the cloud. Beyond the requisite cost reduction, new opportunities emerge with cloud that are impossible to achieve in an environment of discrete platforms and applications. We need to move up from storage and simple application hosting to embrace business models and processes that have been re-engineered for a cloud environment, especially when those processes span the boundaries from one enterprise to another, providing the binding that links manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and customers.
I have known Gartner for decades during my IBM and Oracle days. Even though I have observed how they invent new terms for stuff we already know (a bit annoying, but I guess that’s their business), they do a decent job in capturing key strategic trends. In a recent article, I saw ten strategic technology trends and this is how they are grouped: the first three address merging the physical and the virtual worlds and the emergence of the digital mesh (their new phrase); the next three trends cover the algorithmic business, where much happens in the background in which people are not directly involved; the final four trends address the new architecture and platform trends needed to support the digital and algorithmic business.

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong.
Printed electronics are being touted as the next best thing in Internet of Things (IoT), the technology that is rightly regarded as a boon of advancing technology. Silicon-based sensors are the first that have been associated with IoT technology. These sensors have numerous applications, such as track data from airplane, wind turbines, engines, and medical devices, among other internet connected devices.
As the Internet of Things becomes more capable, moving from an initial ad hoc bundle of chaos to an optimized set of interconnected assets, we will need to ensure it performs and is reliable. But this means the tools measuring the performance and reliability of the IoT will also need to mature as the need for timely, understandable, quality, business-critical information becomes paramount. Sensors that are malfunctioning, devices that are offline, data that’s little more than noise can all scuttle the best IoT monitoring strategies. Let's fix them. Let's make sure the "Things" in IoT are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

In a recent weekend edition of the #CIOChat tweetchat, the question was raised about what the CIO's role would look like in five years. The discussion focused on many different areas. One area was that the CIO would become more of a service broker, as more and more applications move to the cloud. The responsibility discussion becomes less about controlling / owning iron / hardware / space, which has been the traditional area of CIO responsibilities. This prompted a secondary question from me: Has the cloud industry reached the point where it is too big to fail? Granted none of the big players in the cloud show any signs of financial trouble, but there was a time when the auto industry and the banking industry could say the same. Have we reached that tipping point? Has the cloud industry become too big to fail and, if it has, what is the impact?

The Internet of Things (IoT), in all its myriad manifestations, has great potential. Much of that potential comes from the evolving data management and analytic (DMA) technologies and processes that allow us to gain insight from all of the IoT data that can be generated and gathered. This potential may never be met as those data sets are tied to specific industry verticals and single markets, with no clear way to use IoT data and sensor analytics to fulfill the hype being given the IoT today.
Fresh off the Vegas-style hypefest that is the Consumer Electronics Show, fitness wearables darling Fitbit is already in hot water. Numerous customers, furious at the inaccuracies of Fitbit’s devices, filed a national class-action lawsuit on January 5. “Plaintiffs and many consumers like them have experienced—and testing confirms—that the [Fitbit] PurePulse Trackers consistently mis-record heart rates by a very significant margin, particularly during exercise,” the lawsuit alleges. “Far from ‘counting every beat,’ the PurePulse Trackers do not and cannot consistently and accurately record wearers’ heart rates during the intense physical activity for which Fitbit expressly markets them.”
The cloud has evolved quickly. Businesses have weighed the perks of private, public, and even hybrid clouds. If those options weren’t enough, here comes the open hybrid cloud. An open hybrid cloud leverages the benefits of accessing data and processes across private and public implementations, while facilitating open source development. The Internet of Things or IoT is more than the newest fitness monitor or cool device. It is the process of transparently deploying countless sensors and devices, which produce data that is transformed into valued information. This happens each time a consumer buys a smart device such as a fitness monitor. The consumer knowingly enables the device to monitor an event, such as a run. In turn, the device creates data, e.g., step count, which is transported across the internet to a cloud application. Analytics are then performed on aggregated data, e.g. friends’ data, to create information, e.g. rankings, which is then consumed through human or machine action, e.g. to improve run father, possibly faster.
We are well into the first month of 2016, and many predictions from the cloud sector have started to reveal different trends that we may see over the next 12 months. In 2015 we saw IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) growing 51 per cent, with cloud firmly being pushed into the limelight. Seismic monitoring tends to pop up in the news only during disaster situations, or, more recently, in conjunction with North Korea’s possible detonation of a hydrogen bomb. Earlier in 2015, The New Yorker ran a piece, “The Really Big One,” looking at the probability of a large earthquake destroying the Pacific Northwest. The earthquake off the coast of Japan in 2011 triggered one of the largest nuclear plant meltdowns of recent history, the impact of which we are still dealing with today.
