It’s that time of year when we gift and re-gift, just like this text from last year. And the perfect opportunity to re-post, re-purpose and re-use all my 2015 blog entries. Last year, I made some predictions about how the cloud and data would change the technology landscape. This included the now clear rise of SQL, the consolidation of cloud application vendors, the end of the war between the public and private cloud, and the growth of analytics fueled by machine data. Whether you call it the Internet of Things, the Internet of Everything, M2M, a smarter planet, the Industrial Internet or something else, the trend is clear. Because the attack surface for cloud applications is dramatically different than for highly controlled data centers, a disciplined and multi-layered approach that spans all of your processes, staff, vendors and technologies is required. This may sound expensive and time consuming to achieve as you plan how to move selected applications to the cloud, but smart organizations are actually reporting an improved security posture, accelerated development processes and greater cost savings.

WebRTC services have already permeated corporate communications in the form of videoconferencing solutions. However, WebRTC has the potential of going beyond and catalyzing a new class of services providing more than calls with capabilities such as mass-scale real-time media broadcasting, enriched and augmented video, person-to-machine and machine-to-machine communications. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Luis Lopez, CEO of Kurento, introduced the technologies required for implementing these ideas and some early experiments performed in the Kurento open source software community in areas such as entertainment, video surveillance, interactive media broadcasting, gaming or advertising. He concluded with a discussion of their potential business applications beyond plain call models.

We can reasonably break down the core imperatives of data analytics into three essential areas. Firms that wish to gain the full potential out of engaging in data analytics today are obliged to at least recognize these rudimentary cornerstones as the central building blocks of data intelligence: Prepare, Model and Automate. Overgrown applications have given way to modular applications, driven by the need to break larger problems into smaller problems. Similarly large monolithic development processes have been forced to be broken into smaller agile development cycles. Looking at trends in software development, microservices architectures meet the same demands. Additional benefits of microservices architectures are compartmentalization and a limited impact of service failure versus a complete software malfunction. The problem is there are a lot of moving parts in these designs; this makes assuring performance complex especially if the services are geographically distributed or provided by multiple third parties.
Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as soon as they are needed to take action.

The technology industry is fond of rounding out the year with predictions for the twelve months ahead. It’s almost as if our arbitrary notion of calendar-driven time should be guaranteed to herald the arrival of the next paradigm shift or platform change. Of course we know that in reality, change and development happens continuously and this is especially so in IT. Rather than a ‘what to expect in the year ahead’ discussion, let’s instead look at some of the darker truths that currently stem from the data universe we are all currently trying to circumnavigate.
