Had Mark Twain lived today, we might hear him utter the oath lies, damn lies, and analytics. Statistics to be sure may still be used to distort the truth – but now with the sudden explosion of big data, analytics threaten the same fate. I’m not talking about intentional distortion here – that’s another story entirely. Rather, the risk of unintentional distortion via data analytics is becoming increasingly prevalent, as the sheer quantity of data increases, as well as the availability and usability of the analytics tools on the market. The data scientists themselves aren’t the problem. In fact, the more qualified data scientists we have, the better. But there aren’t enough of these rare professionals to go around.
Now that we’ve had a few years of cloud adoption under our belts, I thought it was a good time to take a look at how some of the cloud models are performing. Public cloud has it’s own great case study with Amazon AWS, and private clouds see strong supporters with forward-thinking IT teams. But there is another model that is winning over IT teams, the hybrid cloud, and it has good reason to. With the rise of cloud models, we’ve heard a lot about the benefits of public and private clouds. Public clouds gave us the ability to leverage low-cost services to help organizations transition to cloud models through availability of services such as Amazon AWS. Private clouds were either built in-house to start taking advantage of the same type of technologies that make public clouds so attractive, but sadly the scale of efficiencies often doesn’t work for small organizations because the upfront costs of purchasing hardware and licenses can be more than simply leveraging cloud services from a third-party provider.

In my research on mobile commerce and mobile consumers' behaviors this year, the need to personalize a user's mobile/digital experiences always comes up as a top priority. Everyone wants an experience that is relevant. However, as I pondered these studies, it occurred to me that personalization is only a part of the solution. If you received an SMS message on your smartphone about a shoe sales (your favorite brand and style), that ended yesterday, at a location hundreds of miles away, the personalization would be without value. Yes, it is your preferred brand and style, but not in your location or at a relevant time. So there is something missing.

There’s a whole lot of talking and proposing and presenting going on around risk-based . Usually it’s around authentication and access. The basic premise is that based on a score, formulated from a set of variables (context), you decide whether or not someone is allowed access to a resource. The formula is based on context and can include things like location, device, time of day, day of week, and application status.
In my last post I discussed how all major business models are facing a software-enterprise threat, and that IT will need to tackle this head on in order for businesses to remain successful. However: how can previous generation businesses ACTUALLY succeed in this new software-defined world? Last year Gartner introduced the concept of ‘bimodal IT': a new organizational model for enterprise IT in which IT organizations have two different modes of IT, each designed to address different technology and information goals. The first mode will focus on stability, scalability and efficiency, the second being more experimental and agile, with a focus on speed. They predicted that by 2017, 75% of IT organizations will have bimodal capacity (though 50% may make a mess of it).

Chef, the leader in automation for DevOps, today announced it has closed a $40 million Series E funding round. The round was led by DFJ Growth and included Millennium Technology Value Partners, as well as all existing investors: Battery Ventures, Citi Ventures, DFJ, Ignition Partners, and ScaleVP.
