Logentries offers a variety of ways to get logs out of your containerized environment, including our Linux Agent, application plugin libraries, and Syslog. In this post we’ll cover collecting and forwarding logs via our Docker Logentries Container, which requires Docker 1.5 or higher. To configure the Docker Logentries Container you'll need to do the following: Create a destination log in your Logentries account to record your Docker logs.

Being able to append documentation to an alert is very powerful and provides the on-call person with information to help solve the problem baked right into the alert. Imagine wikis, links to runbooks or graphs right when and where you need them. But that’s only addressing half of the problem. If you really want to decrease alert fatigue, you need a way to route alerts to the people who can solve them….which is the other useful part of our Transmogrifier feature. The process of intelligent routing gives teams the ability to change the state of alerts, which includes everything from cleaning up and quieting alarms during certain parts of the day to ensuring alarms are directed to specific people, and creating alarms for custom monitoring solutions or emails.

A broad coalition of industry leaders and users are joining forces to create the Open Container Project (OCP), chartered to establish common standards for software containers. Housed under the Linux Foundation, the OCP’s mission is to enable users and companies to continue to innovate and develop container-based solutions, with confidence that their pre-existing development efforts will be protected and without industry fragmentation. As part of this initiative, Docker will donate the code for its software container format and its runtime, as well as the associated specifications. The leadership of the Application Container spec (“appc”) initiative, including founding member CoreOS, will also be bringing their technical leadership and support to OCP.

Transparency and collaboration are at the core of DevOps philosophy, and ChatOps is an important aspect of both. ChatOps puts an entire team or organization’s work in one place – everyone’s actions, notifications and diagnoses happen in full view. A native PagerDuty chat client would be designed for use during incidents, and wouldn’t replace the chat client you use every day. Having two different chat records, which a native chat client would encourage, runs counter to the DevOps philosophy.

While I agree that the near-endless possibilities of the consumer side of IoT will transform our everyday lives for the better, making things simpler and more connected, it’s not the only angle our society should focus on. There is a huge opportunity for the industrial IoT to significantly impact the world – especially in critical situations.
At DevOps Summit NY there’s been a whole lot of talk about not just DevOps, but containers, IoT, and microservices. Sessions focused not just on the cultural shift needed to grow at scale with a DevOps approach, but also made sure to include the network ”plumbing” needed to ensure success as applications decompose into the microservice architectures enabling rapid growth and support for the Internet of (Every)Things.
In the last blog we started the conversation on our findings from @Cloud Expo 2015 and @ThingsExpo 2015 as the industry came together to explore the impact of Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) on business models as we know them. While often the focus of IoT are consumer services and the sometimes over-simplification of what constitutes an IoT company or service, one area there is no disputing is the significant advancement in the Industrial Internet (a term made popular by GE). Ongoing improvements in sensor technologies – including performance, miniaturization, cost and energy consumption – make intelligent products more accessible.
While DevOps most critically and famously fosters collaboration, communication, and integration through cultural change, culture is more of an output than an input. In order to actively drive cultural evolution, organizations must make substantial organizational and process changes, and adopt new technologies, to encourage a DevOps culture. Moderated by Andi Mann, panelists discussed how to balance these three pillars of DevOps, where to focus attention (and resources), where organizations might slip up with the wrong focus, how to manage change and risk in all three areas, what is possible and what is not, where to start, and especially how new structures, processes, and technologies can help drive a new DevOps culture.

Today, more organizations are looking at new technologies and applications for their operations. There is a convergence of industries that were thought to be independent which are now interdependent. What is missing is the ability to find common ground in definitions of infrastructure and other terminologies. From the US Army Corps of Engineers’ “Infrastructure and the Operational Art” Handbook: The word infrastructure has many definitions, each tailored to the particular perspective of the author. Each is correct for the needs of the author, but in a broader, conceptual sense, multiple definitions taken together are necessary for a complete understanding. The U.S. Army states that infra-structure “is composed of the basic facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society” (U.S. Army 2012a)
