When you attend a DevOpsDays, it’s made clear from the beginning that you are a participant. I understood this in theory but it wasn’t until I went to my first Open Spaces session that I realized just how serious people are about this. [Scout said it better in their blog post about the Open Spaces at the event: "This is where the magic happens."] I proposed a session about DevOps and marketing and was pleasantly surprised when about a dozen people showed up to chat. The venue for the event was Fortrust, the very data center that houses our cage of servers. I’ve never actually been to a data center before so taking a tour of the facility was a highlight for me. Additionally, Fortrust turned out to be a great space, providing ample room for vendors, breakout sessions and random conversations to coexist peacefully. Full transparency: Not only are we Fortrust customers, we’re also big fans.
IoT applications will come in all shapes and sizes but no matter the size, availability is paramount to support both customers and the business. The most basic high-availability architecture is the typical three-tier design. A pair of ADCs in the DMZ terminates the connection. They in turn intelligently distribute the client request to a pool (multiple) of IoT application servers which then query the database servers for the appropriate content. Each tier has redundant servers so in the event of a server outage, the others take the load and the system stays available.

The Solr Redis Plugin is an extension for Solr that provides a query parser that uses data stored in Redis. It is open-sourced on Github by Sematext. This tool is basically a QParserPlugin that establishes a connection to Redis and takes data stored in SET, ZRANGE and other Redis data structures in order to build a query. Data fetched from Redis is used in RedisQParser and is responsible for building a query. Moreover, this plugin provides a highlighter extension which can be used to highlight parts of aliased Solr Redis queries (this will be described in a future).

Due to the nature of our business, high availability is extremely important to VictorOps and something we take very seriously. We know our customers rely on our service to be always up so that we can process and deliver their alerts and notifications. One of the key components that is critical to the functioning and availability of any SaaS service is the datastore. At VictorOps we have historically used MySQL in high availability Percona Xtradb Clusters for operational and analytical uses. While MySQL is a mature and reliable relational database and has performed well, we had planned from early on to move to a more horizontally scalable datastore in order to meet our scalability and high availability requirements (including multi-datacenter failover capabilities).
There are BIG changes on the horizon for the healthcare industry – the power struggle between healthcare providers such as hospitals, and healthcare payers such as insurance companies – and Big Data is at the heart of driving these changes. I’m struck by what’s happening in the healthcare industry – between healthcare providers such as hospitals, and healthcare payers such as insurance companies – and how that industry is ripe for a metamorphosis into something much more efficient, effective and customer (patient)-centric. And within this metamorphosis, new power brokers are likely to emerge; those players who are able to leverage new sources of patient, physician, clinical, medication and care data to optimize key operational processes and dramatically reduce inefficient and unnecessary processes and procedures.

Many marketers take a more-is-better approach to stats, preferring to have the ability to slice and dice their email lists based numerous arbitrary stats. However, fundamentally what really matters is whether or not sending an email to a particular recipient will generate value. Data Scientists can design high-level insights such as engagement prediction models and content clusters that allow marketers to cut through the noise and design their campaigns around strong, predictive signals, rather than arbitrary statistics.
People and organizations are accustomed to relying upon “on average” guidelines in order to manage their lives and businesses. But “on average” guidelines are severely flawed. In reality, you are either spending too much or spending too little on your individual customers; you are wasting money on over-served customers and leaving money on the table on under-served customers. However, big data changes that paradigm. We should reject running our businesses using “on average” rules of thumbs. We now have the detailed data and the analytic capability to understand behaviors, tendencies, propensities, characteristics, trends and patterns at the individual level – whether those individuals are humans or machines – and we can leverage these insights to make improved business decisions.

For those of us that have been practicing SOA for over a decade, it's surprising that there's so much interest in microservices. In fairness microservices don't look like the vendor play that was early SOA in the early noughties. But experienced SOA practitioners everywhere will be wondering if microservices is actually a good thing. You see microservices is basically an SOA pattern that inherits all the well-known SOA principles and adds characteristics that address the use of SOA for distributed, finer grained software services. And like all patterns, microservices are not applicable to all situations, and it's very important to understand the cost/benefit equation. Those folks that are heralding microservices as the "new SOA" or "the right way to do SOA" are flat wrong. Microservices is a specialization of SOA that has applicability to a relatively narrow problem space.
The DevOps Institute (DOI) launched on Monday with the mission of serving as the premier source for aligning industry standard quality DevOps training and examination services for enterprise IT. The Institute is led by a Board of Regents who will oversee DOI’s offerings in an effort to codify and promote DevOps’ best practices and standards that enable enterprise IT to deliver more value faster to their customers. The initial Board of Regents includes Gene Kim, Lori MacVittie, Sanjeev Sharma, Helen Beal, Rohit Antao, Gary Gruver, Lou Hunnebeck, Matthew Selheimer, Donna Knapp and JP Morgenthal. They join co-founders Jayne Groll, Lisa Schwartz and Alan Shimel in leading the DevOps Institute to fulfill its mission.

I recently wrote about how Amazon’s new Dash service embodies the Stackato vision; in that post I discussed how Dash reflects the Business Agility portion of our vision. As the image to the left shows, Dash is a service that offers a small button; when pressed, magic happens and an order is placed for the product (in this example, Tide detergent), which is eventually delivered to the customer. Dash presents a very different model of retailing, changing the purchase execution from a physical retail outlet or an online website to the very location of product consumption. With this service, Amazon boxes out its retail competitors by offering a more convenient and immediate transaction. I think Dash is a really interesting and innovative offering that foreshadows the enormous changes the Third Platform portends.

After graduation Peter worked on a PSTN switch developing signalling stacks for SS7, ISDN and similar protocols and creating advanced routing and service applications.

It's not boiling over like cloud did in its early years but rather it's slowly, steadily continuing to move forward as more organizations evaluate, pilot and implement pockets of SDN within their organization. stage of sdn deployment 2015 But it's not all rainbows and unicorns. A mere 8% of organizations in our State of Application Delivery 2015 reported having SDN deployed in production. Another 8% were in their initial implementation, but a whopping 43% had no plans to deploy at all.
What exactly is a cognitive application? In her session at 16th Cloud Expo, Ashley Hathaway, Product Manager at IBM Watson, will look at the services being offered by the IBM Watson Developer Cloud and what that means for developers and Big Data. She'll explore how IBM Watson and its partnerships will continue to grow and help define what it means to be a cognitive service, as well as take a look at the offerings on Bluemix. She will also check out how Watson and the Alchemy API team up to offer disruptive APIs to developers.
We’re proud to announce availability of the first complete end-to-end queue support in an APM product. We’ve been working hard on this and are excited to share the results of our work with you. A couple months ago we announced support for JMS and Rabbit MQ messaging services. Once you update your Ruxit Agent (version 1.69) you can see which queues each service sends messages to and pulls messages from. For now, this works for all Java-based services. We’ll be extending this functionality to other technologies in the future.
