Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture. Today, everything must be faster. Faster releases; faster and larger backlogs; faster complaints; faster bugs. The speed and performance of the modern software delivery pipeline brings a new set of challenges. How do you keep up? There really is only one option - automation and measurement. You need a method for automatically collecting data about your application and how it is being used. But also a good way to find the relevant information and act on it. And in order to do this your development team needs to lead with analytics first.

4.7 Billion Mobile WebRTC Devices by 2018 | @ThingsExpo [#WebRTC]

Even though Apple and Microsoft haven’t commented on the new open source technology which delivers high quality audio and video capabilities to desktop and mobile browsers, major carriers such as AT&T and Telefónica, leading infrastructure providers like Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson and new WebRTC application providers in likes of Teledini and NetDev are driving the technology forward. Research analyst, Sabir Rafiq comments, “WebRTC brings many opportunities; ABI Research believes major trends will start to form within the enterprise market with WebRTC. Companies will be willing to implement the new technology to aid productivity and reduce communication barriers within the workplace.” ABI Research recognizes that there are significant barriers in the way of WebRTC technology becoming widely adopted. Firstly, Apple is not showing any interest in WebRTC, similar to its approach to Adobe Flash. As it is a brand leader in the mobile space, this could impact short term opportunity. Microsoft’s alternative to WebRTC, the CU-RTC, could deter users away from WebRTC and should essentially be considered a competitor. In the end, we believe Apple and Microsoft will not ignore the market opportunity for WebRTC.

Java 8: Date and Time | Part I

Since Time is a natural concept, in an ideal world, dealing with it should be simple, but unfortunately it is not the case and we humans made it more complex by introducing different time zones and day light saving. As a programmer, we want that programming languages immune us from these complexity and being a Java programmer, we have similar expectations from Java. Java tried to overcome these complexities in its first two editions of Date and Time API, but failed measurably. A simple google will give you numerous posts criticizing Java for this. Few years back, I was introduced to Joda-Time library that provide APIs that help you to work with Time with ease. In its latest edition (Java 8), in its third attempt, finally Java brought this change that we all were looking for long. With its new APIs, it is no more require to use either third party APIs or create several utility classes/methods to deal with date and time. This new API is heavily inspired by Joda-Time library.

From Connected Things to Connected Marketplaces By @MetraTech | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

IDG Enterprise’s 2015 Big Data and Analytics survey shows that the number of organizations with deployed/implemented data-driven projects has increased by 125% over the past year. The momentum continues to build. Big Data as a concept is characterized by 3Vs: Volume, Velocity, and Variety. Big Data implies a huge amount of data. Due to the sheer size, Big Data tends to be clumsy. The dominating implementation solution is Hadoop, which is batch based. Not just a handful of companies in the market merely collect lots of data with noise blindly, but they don't know how to cleanse it, let alone how to transform, store and consume it effectively. They simply set up a HDFS cluster to dump the data gathered and then label it as their “Big Data” solution. Unfortunately, the consequence of what they did actually marks the death of Big Data.

Back in 2009 I posted about the “Great Cloud Shakeout” and the coming market consolidation into a few very large clouds. Nearly 5 1/2 years later and it’s about (long past?) time I took another look to see how I did. Back then I predicted that the market would be dominated by “mega CSPs” by the name of Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Note that this was during a period of Cambrian Explosion in the CSP market – it seems like everybody in the hosting business wanted to be a cloud provider.

Wearables in the sports and health sectors will grow to nearly 170 million devices by 2017 — an annual growth rate of 41 percent. Specific to the enterprise, if you thought the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) craze was a headache, just wait until button cameras, smart watches, fitness trackers, and connected glasses are a daily occurrence in the office. Workplace wearables will be a huge challenge in the coming years as more devices, clothing and pretty much any ‘thing’ with a chip or sensor become commonplace in society.
