Log data provides the most granular view into what is happening across your systems, applications, and end users. Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture. Today, everything must be faster. Faster releases; faster and larger backlogs; faster complaints; faster bugs. The speed and performance of the modern software delivery pipeline brings a new set of challenges. How do you keep up? There really is only one option - automation and measurement. You need a method for automatically collecting data about your application and how it is being used. But also a good way to find the relevant information and act on it. And in order to do this your development team needs to lead with analytics first.
Even though Apple and Microsoft haven’t commented on the new open source technology which delivers high quality audio and video capabilities to desktop and mobile browsers, major carriers such as AT&T and Telefónica, leading infrastructure providers like Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson and new WebRTC application providers in likes of Teledini and NetDev are driving the technology forward. Research analyst, Sabir Rafiq comments, “WebRTC brings many opportunities; ABI Research believes major trends will start to form within the enterprise market with WebRTC. Companies will be willing to implement the new technology to aid productivity and reduce communication barriers within the workplace.” ABI Research recognizes that there are significant barriers in the way of WebRTC technology becoming widely adopted. Firstly, Apple is not showing any interest in WebRTC, similar to its approach to Adobe Flash. As it is a brand leader in the mobile space, this could impact short term opportunity. Microsoft’s alternative to WebRTC, the CU-RTC, could deter users away from WebRTC and should essentially be considered a competitor. In the end, we believe Apple and Microsoft will not ignore the market opportunity for WebRTC.

Operationalizing the network continues to be a driving force behind DevOps and SDN. The ability to solve real problems using programmability to automate and orchestrate infrastructure provisioning and configuration across the application release process remains the hope for many interested in one or the other - and often times both. A recent Avaya sponsored, Dynamic Markets survey (reg required) dove deep into the demesne of SDN and found that many of the problems companies have - and expect to be solved by SDN - are directly related to provisioning, configuration and downtime concerns around services and applications across the network.
Since Time is a natural concept, in an ideal world, dealing with it should be simple, but unfortunately it is not the case and we humans made it more complex by introducing different time zones and day light saving. As a programmer, we want that programming languages immune us from these complexity and being a Java programmer, we have similar expectations from Java. Java tried to overcome these complexities in its first two editions of Date and Time API, but failed measurably. A simple google will give you numerous posts criticizing Java for this. Few years back, I was introduced to Joda-Time library that provide APIs that help you to work with Time with ease. In its latest edition (Java 8), in its third attempt, finally Java brought this change that we all were looking for long. With its new APIs, it is no more require to use either third party APIs or create several utility classes/methods to deal with date and time. This new API is heavily inspired by Joda-Time library.
The biggest, and possibly the most hated buzzwords to happen to IT in the last 10 years have been… Cloud, Internet of Things, and drumroll… Big Data (featuring its ugly stepchild the Data Lake). And over the past 10+ years, I’ve had the job of explaining these “things” to people (many of whom are not technical). Nobody likes new buzzwords – at least not the kind of people I like. But if they become understood, and validated, people start to understand why they’re legitimately needed. And this is the year, 2015, when Data Lake earns its keep.

At first glance, the idea of more connected things suggests simply that there will be more devices around and, as such, more products for manufacturers to make and sell. Of course that’s true, but increasingly the industry is realizing that there is actually more value in the services related to connected things than the things themselves. As more things get connected, analyst projections forecast a global market of 50 billion connected devices by 2020, the range of service opportunities is expanding at an exponential rate. And as those services are presented online, they become available for use, re-use and re-purposing. It’s easy to imagine the rich service possibilities when sensors have the ability to report on their status and environment and tell us what they are doing and plan to do. And when things become interconnected as part of a broader ecosystem, this broadens the service possibilities even further. Connected things, systems and people can provide information to other things, systems and people and initiate actions for each other. In recent years, the US government has become a leading advocate for continuous monitoring of security threats and vulnerabilities. But how effectively are departments and agencies in implementing these programs? And how do we measure success? Moving Towards Continuous Monitoring Though it’s become a popular concept, continuous monitoring wasn’t always in vogue. When the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) was enacted in 2002, the law required agencies to document security practices, including taking inventory of information systems and writing security plans. External firms would audit the plans and grade departments and agencies based on their efforts.

2015 is the 10th birthday of Ruby on Rails (or simply called Rails), the popular open source web application framework that uses the Ruby programming language. Ever since Rails burst on the scene a decade ago it has continued to scale up as an elegant way to build dynamic websites quickly and efficiently. Rails has garnered a strong following, especially among tech startups. In fact, some of the best known firms out there are using the framework to build their sites. Examples of elegant sites built on Rails are Groupon, Airbnb, and Bloomberg.
IDG Enterprise’s 2015 Big Data and Analytics survey shows that the number of organizations with deployed/implemented data-driven projects has increased by 125% over the past year. The momentum continues to build. Big Data as a concept is characterized by 3Vs: Volume, Velocity, and Variety. Big Data implies a huge amount of data. Due to the sheer size, Big Data tends to be clumsy. The dominating implementation solution is Hadoop, which is batch based. Not just a handful of companies in the market merely collect lots of data with noise blindly, but they don't know how to cleanse it, let alone how to transform, store and consume it effectively. They simply set up a HDFS cluster to dump the data gathered and then label it as their “Big Data” solution. Unfortunately, the consequence of what they did actually marks the death of Big Data.
It will be interesting (perhaps quite easy) to develop a tamper-proof gun mounted camera that can automatically log all activities and stream load data to a cloud service. Such a device should be a standard official issue. In fact as gun-related violence has been on the radar, it should be mandatory for all registered guns.
Community is an area of great interest to me. As the evangelist for VictorOps, I’m tapped with many challenges and responsibilities. Not only do I try to provide useful guidance and feedback regarding VictorOps and DevOps best practices, but also bring together customers and partners with shared interest and excitement for what we are building to make on-call suck less. If there is a group in which one could model how to build a great community after, it’s Chef and this year’s ChefConf is a testament to that.
Back in 2009 I posted about the “Great Cloud Shakeout” and the coming market consolidation into a few very large clouds. Nearly 5 1/2 years later and it’s about (long past?) time I took another look to see how I did. Back then I predicted that the market would be dominated by “mega CSPs” by the name of Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Note that this was during a period of Cambrian Explosion in the CSP market – it seems like everybody in the hosting business wanted to be a cloud provider.

Specific to the enterprise, if you thought the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) craze was a headache, just wait until button cameras, smart watches, fitness trackers, and connected glasses are a daily occurrence in the office. Workplace wearables will be a huge challenge in the coming years as more devices, clothing and pretty much any ‘thing’ with a chip or sensor become commonplace in society.
