A lot is written on mobile technologies, the Internet of Things, social media and analytics, but little is written on how all these might work together in a retail environment. I think best by writing, so let's think this through together. Blind spots are defined as, "Areas where a person's view is obstructed." Many business decisions today are still made based on conjecture (unsubstantiated assumptions), because the data needed to make a data-driven decision lies in an operational "blind spot."
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the set of devices and systems that interconnect real world sensors and actuators to the internet. This includes many different types of systems. These systems connect to the internet or gateway in a variety of manners including long range WiFi/Ethernet using IP protocols (tcp/udp, including cellular), short range Bluetooth low energy, short range Near Field Communications, or other types of medium range radio networks. Point to point radio links and serial lines are also used. There are many sensors that connect directly to the internet and there are others that may need specialized IoT networking hardware. Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT), for instance, is a subscribe and publish messaging protocol designed for lightweight machine to machine (M2M) communications. Originally developed by IBM, is now an open standard but its primary purpose is to allow a device to send a very short message one hop to a MQ broker and to receive commands from that broker. It needs a gateway or receiver (broker) to communicate. Basically, every message is published to a location, called a topic, clients (the sensors) subscribe to various topics and when a message is published to the topic, the client/sensor gets it.
We just finished the first O’Reilly Software Architecture Conference and the overwhelming most popular topic was microservices. Why all the hype about an architectural style? Microservices are the first post-DevOps revolution architecture. The DevOps revolution highlighted how much inadvertent friction an outdated operations mindset can cause, starting the move towards automating away manual tasks.
In my previous post, I discussed the importance of APM. The APM market has evolved substantially over the years, mostly in an attempt to adapt to changing application technologies and deployments. When we had very simple applications that directly accessed a database then APM was not much more than a performance analyzer for a database. But as applications moved to the web and we saw the first wave of application servers then APM solutions really came into their own.

One of the unintended consequences of cloud is the operational inconsistency it introduces. Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are talking about microservices instead, let’s switch out the terminology.
In my younger days (we won’t discuss how long ago that was) I decided to take up sailing. I had always been fascinated watching sailboats, gliding smoothly along the water, with nothing but wind as their engine. My first lesson on the water was an exhilarating and eye opening experience. The instructor took me out on a 17-foot day sailer. It was a brisk New England April afternoon, what seemed like a perfect day to be sailing. The instructor explained the different techniques and maneuvers required to traverse the lake, which I executed, though somewhat nervously. We were moving at what felt like breakneck speeds, constantly shifting and changing the position of the boat, adjusting the sail to the changing wind directions, while still heading in the desired direction. Suddenly, a gust of wind came from a completely unexpected direction. Before I fully realized what had happened, I found myself treading water, looking back at the day sailer, which was completely turtled (a term I learned that day) upside down in the water. My instructor, amazingly, was standing on top of the upside down boat, completely dry.

New in the CTOvision Research Library: We have just posted an overview of an architectural assessment we produced laying out best practices and design patterns for the use of SAS and Apache Hadoop, with a focus on the government sector. Enterprises in government are awash in more data than they can make sense of. This has given rise to the current “Big Data” phenomenon, in which opportunities for turning data into knowledge using analytics calls for new solutions. Challenges such as scalability, performance and the ability to handle new and different types of data makes it difficult to unlock the value in the data while it is still current. One of the most important architectural trends enterprises should consider today is the integration of new Hadoop-centric Big Data approaches with user-focused business analytics capabilities.

It has always interested me to see how different development teams treat code reviews. Some teams see code reviews as crucial to their success while others see them as a barrier to getting things done. Over time, I've come to the conclusion that the culture around code reviews is an important indicator in predicting outcomes for a team. I wholeheartedly believe this because I've seen the quality of code (and thus the product) and the culture of the team directly affected by a team's code review practices. Ultimately, we can observe a team's genuine agility in how it handles code review.
The primary objective of a platform should be to provide a high-level of automation. This provides easy management of applications and services, while delivering consistent and error-free deployment of applications. While this high level automation provides a critical foundation, additional specialized services can be added to increase manageability of the applications deployed on the platform. To assist operators in this pursuit the Pivotal Cloud Foundry platform provides a number of integrated services out-of-the-box, including AppDynamics, New Relic, and CloudBees Jenkins. This blog will focus on the “out-of-the-box” integration between Pivotal Cloud Foundry and AppDynamics.
Recently I wrote a blog showing how to use the WebSocket protocol to push the data from a Java server to a JavaScript client. This time I’ll keep the same code on the server, but the client will be written in Dart. For this example I was using GlassFish 4.1 server, and IntelliJ IDEA 14.1 with installed Dart plugin. I also have Dart 1.9.1 SDK. My goal was to create one Web application deployable module that would contain both Java and Dart code. I’ll be brief assuming the the reader has some familiarity with IntelliJ IDEA IDE and the structure of Dart projects. Repeating the same exercise in Eclipse IDE should be a trivial task too.
IoT sensors extend our physical senses beyond our physical reach and communicate the results from afar. They also allow us to share experiences remotely, not just mentally, but also tactilely. That is the first time I have ever used the word “tactilely.” It means to tangibly or physically experience something. For example, AMS’s MEMS gas sensor allows people to hear, see and smell inside their home remotely from an iPhone app. The Withings Home camera sends alerts to an iPhone if it detects movement or noise in the house. Its night-vision sensor mode enables the remote viewer to even see in the dark. The viewer can also talk through the camera to ask questions like, “Who are you, and why are you carrying my big screen TV away?”
