Over the next several months, I’m going to share with you an interview series featuring my DevOps friends, letting them talk about what they have planned for 2015. To preview some of the folks I’ll be communicating with, I’ve put together a teaser of who I’ll be talking with in one form or another. All of them have some very exciting things coming up and I can’t wait to share with you what they are.
Using Cloud (aka SaaS) applications is natural for most of us — simply sign up with your email, login and then use the service within minutes. The Cloud works particularly well with consumer-oriented services. Businesses, however, have slightly different needs. Up until now, Sematext Apps offered only App sharing. For instance, if you had an SPM App for monitoring your Elasticsearch cluster, another SPM App for monitoring Spark, and a Logsene App where you shipped all your logs, you could invite one or more of your teammates to each one of those apps separately, and give them either Admin or User role. This works fine when you have just a few teammates or just a few Apps.
Cloud has become part of the enterprise landscape with nearly 90 percent of businesses having adopted cloud-based apps and services. However, organizations need to make sure that these cloud solutions don’t compromise the hard-won security policies that govern the rest of the information enterprise and are supported through IT. As organizations shift to embrace popular cloud-based applications like Office 365, Salesforce, and other services that support the business, identity access management (IAM) solutions become crucial for maintaining productivity and security. Additionally, a single sign-on (SSO) solution that is deployed in conjunction with a solid IAM strategy streamlines access to thousands of cloud applications and enforces necessary security policies. It allows users to easily access the applications and services they need with a single click.

Growing threats from both malicious and non-malicious insiders means data security should be an incredibly high priority for enterprises. As Vormetric’s 2015 Insider Threat Report noted, 44% of US organizations experienced a data breach or failed compliance audit in the last year. This is an alarming number, especially when one considers the amount of valuable data many companies store.
When people think of IoT technology they usually think of silicon based sensors made by semiconductor companies. These types of sensors can be found tracking data on airplane engines, wind turbines, medical devices, and many more internet connected devices. The problem with silicon based sensors is that they are not feasible for cost sensitive items or items in small or bendable packaging where embedding sensors just won’t work. To solve this problem, a company called ThinFilm has created printed electronics.

While many hardware vendors publicly appear to be embracing the move to virtual Layer 4-7 network services, the reality is quite different. To sell virtual appliances – such as load balancers, firewalls, VPNs and intrusion prevention systems (IPS) – they have to overcome the fear of cannibalizing their hardware product line. As companies that have been solely focused on promoting hardware in the past, they don’t immediately recognize how virtual services can enable a wide variety of new use cases and, as a result, increase revenue opportunities. They instead focus on virtual services as one-for-one replacement of existing solutions. If that’s not enough to stall any transition to marketing the new offerings they do actually want to sell – or more accurately, ones that customers want them to sell – they also often take the wrong approach to licensing, making it impossible for users to achieve the promised cost benefits for virtual network services.
Many businesses are realizing the advantages of moving essential business services to cloud-based models, including communications, voice, and CRM. The associated advantages of the cloud have allowed businesses to be more flexible, scalable and enjoy higher cost savings. However, these businesses must bear in mind that there are several security considerations associated with shifting essential systems to the cloud.
The art of software development is being radically transformed by the Agile Development methodology and the DevOps culture. This post will examine one particular aspect of this challenge: keeping QA and Operations in lockstep. With all the rapid change that happens – particularly related to new tests being developed for new features and new versions of the app rolling out live into production – it’s more important than ever to make sure the entire team is working off the same footing.

Today, we are proud to announce the first code drop of Apache Ignite, Apache Ignite v1.0 RC (Release Candidate), available for download on the Apache Ignite homepage. This is an exciting time for the project and the committers have been working hard since November to reach this milestone. We commend them all. Apache Ignite v1.0 RC not only carries forward the capabilities formerly available as the open source edition of the GridGain In-Memory Data Fabric, but now also boasts new ease-of-use and automation features, simplifying the deployment of an in-memory data fabric and allowing organizations to focus more on their core business and analysis.
Business users can conjure new applications, send messages and share information around the world at the speed of light from their mobile devices. But just because they can, doesn’t mean they should – all this sharing and collaboration can have consequences on businesses’ security. Sending this content without consulting the IT department can bring ruin to the best laid plans of an entire organization. There, in the dark regions of Shadow IT lurk the evils of illegality, non-compliance, data loss, information leaks and content theft. For example, a doctor puts patient data on her tablet so she doesn’t have to carry a pile of charts on her rounds. The tablet is stolen and HIPPA regulators are not happy. A marketing guy puts a product roadmap presentation into a file sharing service that gets hacked and future product details are leaked to the press. A salesperson loses his computer bag at an industry conference and price lists and customer contact information are now in the hands of the competition.
When it comes to data security, identifying what you consider your crown jewels is the first step in the data security recovery program. Legacy products can be expensive and negatively impact performance. Organizations need to realize that the complexity and fear of access control is a thing of the past. Before we get started on recovery, here are a few things you need to ask yourself:
When implementing a cloud-based file-sharing solution, the user experience will play a major role in its adoption and overall success. It will be important for you to gather input from your employees and customers and regularly collect feedback to identify ways to better meet their needs. Here are some questions to ask before implementing a cloud-based file-sharing solution.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is causing data centers to become radically decentralized and atomized within a new paradigm known as “fog computing.” To support IoT applications, such as connected cars and smart grids, data centers' core functions will be decentralized out to the network's edges and endpoints (aka “fogs”). As this trend takes hold, Big Data analytics platforms will focus on high-volume log analysis (aka “logs”) and rely heavily on cognitive-computing algorithms (aka “cogs”) to make sense of it all.

Everyone has stayed in a standard hotel room – they all have similar qualities, with similar prices and amenities. You can expect a good night’s sleep, HBO movies on the TV, and a free muffin in the morning. While I may be taking a few liberties with this analogy, I’d argue – the cloud is equivalent to the standard hotel room. There’s nothing wrong with plain, run-of-the-mill accommodations, but you’d be amazed to find Tim Cook shacking up at the Holiday Inn, and he definitely wouldn’t sign a contract requiring him to stay every time he lands in New York.
Peanut butter and jelly. Love and marriage. Horse and carriage. Coffee and cup. Batman and Robin. Some things just belong together. It’s even a little bit magical the way that certain things can be combined to form a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts. That’s certainly true of the classic combo examples above. And it’s also true of the combo of Application Performance Monitoring and Application Analytics. It’s a shame, then, that many of our customers deny themselves the power of combining APM with Application Analytics.
CommVault has launched Simpana for Endpoint Data Protection, a new solution set designed to help protect and enable the mobile workforce by efficiently backing-up laptops, desktops and mobile devices and providing secure access and self-service capabilities. With today's mobile workforce increasing their reliance on information saved on local endpoints and outside IT's traditional domain, the need to protect sensitive data residing on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices has become more critical than ever before. As global data breaches reach an average cost of $3.5 million in US dollars according to a study by the Ponemon Institute due to lost or unrecoverable data on employee devices, including desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, organizations are beginning to embrace centrally managed platforms that can be used to simultaneously address data protection, collaboration, regulatory, and eDiscovery requirements in a secure manner.
This BriefingsDirect discussion explores the role and impact of business networks, the often virtual assemblages of interrelated business services, processes, and data that are transforming how companies and consumers conduct commerce. New business networks are unlocking the ability for companies to extend processes and insights broadly and affordably to customers, suppliers, and other partners. As a result, data-savvy B2B participants in these networks are better able to engage with their communities in new and innovative ways.
Think of your new and existing products and services. Are there other ways you can package and price your offerings? Whether your goal is to grow your customer base, revenue, market share, or share of wallet, recurring revenue models can provide a multitude of options for creating new revenue streams from new or existing products. Much of the industry is still talking about the success of basic subscriptions (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Box, etc.), but many forward-thinking companies know the real value is in the broader range of monetization options. Nearly any product in your catalog can be repackaged into a recurring revenue service with a vast array of pricing options. Whatever your goals may be you have options… and lots of them.
2015 is being billed by many in the industry as the “Year of the Hybrid Cloud.” In fact, more than 65 percent of enterprise IT organizations will commit to hybrid cloud technologies before 2016, vastly driving the rate and pace of change in IT organizations, according to IDC FutureScape for Cloud. The reason hybrid cloud is so attractive is that organizations believe they can achieve greater levels of scalability and cost-effectiveness by using a combination of in-house IT resources and public cloud environments tailored to their unique needs.
