Integration with the Docker platform, CoreOS Linux distribution, and Kubernetes container management system brings more scalability and flexibility to Apache Stratos PaaS. In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Lakmal Warusawithana, Director of Cloud Architecture at WSO2 Inc., will discuss installing and deploying sample applications using Docker, CoreOS and Kubernetes, and walkthrough how it can be extended to support new application containers. He will also demonstrate app deployment, provisioning, auto-scaling, and more.

Big Data is a loose term for the collection, storage, processing, and sophisticated analysis of massive amounts of data, far larger and from many more kinds of sources than ever before. The definition of Big Data can be traced back to the 3Vs model defined by Doug Laney in 2001: Volume, Velocity, and Variety. The fourth V was later added in different fashions, such as “Value” or “Veracity”. Interestingly the conceptualization of Big Data in the beginning of this century seems to gain wider use now after nearly 14 years. This sounds a little strange as the present dynamic world has evolved so much with so many things changed. Does the old definition still fit?
Another year comes to a close. What did we see as significant technology events? In the disruption category, we saw Uber getting valued at $41B even with all its issues in the news. When you disrupt an entrenched business such as taxi service, it is only natural that resistance will happen. But consumers like me love the value-added service from Uber. This is unstoppable as evident from the investor’s confidence in providing $1.2B funding. In the disruption category, companies like Snapchat, Instagram, Airbnb, Instacart, and others made good progress. Re-imagination is the catchword here. See my blog on that topic.
It is not easy setting your infrastructure free, but when you do, the benefits of better application performance, better tools for developers, and better control over your “datacenter” make it worth it. There is a whole lot of talk about this DevOps thing. Pushing teams to move faster, increasing focus on results, and doing so with better and better quality. But the elephant in the room is how we go from immutable infrastructure to scalable environments that move with the code, not against it. And making infrastructure move at the speed of code, takes more than orchestration tools. Operations needs to be confident that they can let the meta-application scale infrastructure on-demand without resulting in a huge mess of tangled servers.

Now is the age of information analytics. We have (very arguably) reached a point where the insight arising from data analytics can be applied to almost every aspect of a company, in every business vertical. The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, and physical persons. In the IoT vision, every new "thing" - sensor, actuator, data source, data consumer, routing intermediary, etc., is a new security-relevant detail that stirs up a wide range of collateral security issues. In other words, every new networked IoT endpoint is a new potential attack vector or launching point that the baddies can exploit. Potentially, every time you plug in a new IoT-networked device that is infected with malware or simply open to unauthorized third-party exploitation, the vulnerabilities start. Someone somewhere might exploit the new access point to gain illicit access to sensitive secrets (business, consumer, government, etc.), to damage software and data, and to wage distributed denial of service attacks.

He is co-author of the book "Securing the Virtual Environment: How to Defend the Enterprise Against Attack," published in May 2012 by Wiley. He formerly was responsible for security at Barclays Global Investors (BGI), the world's largest investment fund manager. Prior to BGI he was a "dedicated paranoid" at Yahoo! and responsible for managing security for hundreds of millions of mobile, broadband and digital home products. Davi received his postgraduate academic Master of Science degree in International History from the London School of Economics.
The concept of a ‘data lake’ was coined by James Dixon of Pentaho Corp. and this is what he said – If you think of a datamart as a store of bottled water – cleansed and packaged and structured for easy consumption – the data lake is a large body of water in a more natural state. The contents of the data lake stream in from a source to fill the lake, and various users of the lake can come to examine, dive in, or take samples. Think of a data lake as an unstructured data warehouse, a place where you pull in all of your different sources into one large “pool” of data. In contrast to a data mart, a data lake won’t “wash” the data or try to structure it or limit the use cases. Sure, you should have some use cases in mind, but the architecture of a data lake is simple: a Hadoop File System (HDFS) with lots of directories and files on it.

While only 22% of respondents reported "accessing the necessary data streams" as the biggest obstacle to real-time decision-making, processing speed (40%) and "integrating diverse data streams to form a single picture" (38%) were reported as more significant challenges. "The data is there, and there's little problem accessing it," said Herrmann. "However, the decision-making pipeline is slowed by reliance on traditional disk-based processing as well as the variety of data structures and data sources organizations are trying to make sense of in their decision-making process. This problem is only likely to worsen until the traditional approach of processing different data within their own silos is addressed, as organizations will only be taking in more and more data."
