DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us. The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days. We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people! My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with RingCentral on Devops for BigData. I also participated in two Power Panels – ‘Women in Technology’ and ‘Why DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,’ both featuring brilliant colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.
It is almost two years ago now when Dmitriy and I stood in front of the white board at the old GridGain office thinking: “How can we deliver all the real-time performance of GridGain’s in-memory technology to Hadoop customers without asking them rip and replace their systems and without asking them to move their datasets off Hadoop?”. If you know anything about Hadoop architecture - the task seemed daunting to us and it proved to be one of the most challenging engineering feat that we have accomplished so far. After almost 24 months of development, tens of thousands of lines of Java, Scala and C++ code, multiple design iterations, several releases and dozens of benchmarks later we have the product that can deliver real-time performance to Hadoop with only minimal integration and no ETL required. Backed-up by customer deployments that prove our performance claims and validate our architecture

The term culture has had a polarizing effect among DevOps supporters. Some propose that culture change is critical for success with DevOps, but are remiss to define culture. Some talk about a DevOps culture but then reference activities that could lead to culture change and there are those that talk about culture change as a set of behaviors that need to be adopted by those in IT. There is no question that businesses successful in adopting a DevOps mindset have seen departmental culture change, the question remains, is culture the leading edge of this change? I posit that in large enterprises, culture change is the result of effective process and organizational change fostered by good IT leaders and is not the front end of change.
This past week the Appcore team got the opportunity to attend one of the industry’s leading cloud events, Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA. We spent a lot of time interacting with attendees at the exhibit portion of the event. As a software company with a sole commitment to CloudStack, we heard a lot of questions around the debate between CloudStack and OpenStack. “Do you support OpenStack?” “Why do you only support CloudStack?” “Do you plan to integrate OpenStack into your multi-cloud solution?” We can all agree that OpenStack has done a great job branding their product. That isn’t hard to do with an annual operating budget of $4–5 mm and enterprises such as Red Hat, Dell, HP and Rackspace backing the project. As you can imagine, many enterprise CEOs believe OpenStack is the right direction.

About 15 years ago I fainted. It was the only time in my life that I fainted. The reasons were probably, blood donation a day before, Work from 7:00 until 19:00 and participation in the the thirty-third day of the Omer period ceremonies of my children (I stood for a long time beside the traditional fire). No problem found during The Medical Check up, I performed. The Medical Check up included wearing an Holter Monitor recording my heart activity for 24 hours. The Holter was a Wearable computing device, however nobody used the word Wearable. If we exclude the enhanced computing power of current Wearables in comparison to the old Holter monitor, we can find two factor differentiating current Wearables from the Holter Monitor.

My favorite writer, Gil Press, sums it up with, “It’s Official: The Internet Of Things Takes Over Big Data As The Most Hyped Technology” where he talks about how Gartner released its latest Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, and how big data has moved down the “trough of disillusionment,” replaced by the Internet of Things at the top of the hype cycle. The term Internet of Things was coined by the British technologist Kevin Ashton in 1999, to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors.
HP hasn’t exactly coined the term Big Data developer. Except, perhaps, it maybe kind of has if you look at the recent tools being rolled out from the firm’s HP Software division. All working towards what HP loves to call “business transformation” – the company is now also using the term “new style of IT,” by which it of course means cloud-centric (always hybrid) technology architectures aligned to take advantage of Big Data analytics (even in SMBs) and other more cutting-edge elements such as enterprise social activity and collaboration technology.
Comparing cloud providers is complicated. With constant price drops and the frequent introduction of new instance types, no matter what answer you come up with today it is sure to change in three months. Taking into account differences in performance, it gets even more confusing when you realize that applications run differently on different clouds. One thing is certain though: price in a vacuum doesn’t tell you the whole story. In fact, it’s a lot like selecting a car based on sticker price and assuming the fuel efficiency of the cylinders is equal across manufacturers. It’s not.
The impact is that it's really difficult to apply access controls to something in the cloud using traditional models that force users and consumers to come to the enterprise data center where that service is hosted first. That has a very negative impact on performance, at a minimum. Similarly, applying acceleration or other performance enhancing services at the enterprise edge when the app is out there, in the cloud, might negate with additional travel time across the Internet any gains that might be had. Some services should be closer to the user - SSO, secure web gateway, GSLB - and others should be closer to the app - SSL, load balancing, web application firewall. But when apps are way over there and users are, well, anywhere, that's much easier said than done.
The next release candidate for 1.11.0 will be out very shortly, but I thought it best to post a brief update on the past week’s work as this week saw a concentrated effort on core optimization. First we took another look at the use of arguments lists throughout the framework and found several more occurrences of it being accessed in an inefficient manner. Depending on the browser, accessing arguments in such a way that causes it to be allocated can be up to 80% slower and so it’s really good to have these all fixed.
Many agile DevOps teams rely on communication via HipChat, which provides an API and mobile apps to receive messages while being away from one’s desktop. SPM Performance Monitoring‘s new integration via WebHooks provides the capability to forward alerts to many services, including HipChat. The integration of both services can be achieved by collecting the room_id and an access token from HipChat and then building a WebHook in SPM. The major cloud platforms defy a simple, side-by-side analysis. Each of the major IaaS public-cloud platforms offers their own unique strengths and functionality. Options for on-site private cloud are diverse as well, and must be designed and deployed while taking existing legacy architecture and infrastructure into account. Then the reality is that most enterprises are embarking on a hybrid cloud strategy and programs. While the initial usage of the Cloud Platform was clearly for the IaaS offerings, the trend is shifting and the PaaS delivery model is gaining a lot of attention. Most of the analysts like IDC and Gartner have predicted huge growth for PaaS in the coming years. IDC predicts Platform as a Service (PaaS) and cloud storage services will be the fastest-growing categories, driven by major upticks in developer cloud services adoption and Big Data-driven solutions, respectively.
SaaS and cloud computing continue to gain real traction in the enterprise – and that trend is sure to continue for a long time to come. But the reality is that, to date, those gaining real benefit from cloud at the enterprise level have been limited largely to isolated pockets; e.g., software development and operations teams leveraging Infrastructure and Platform as a Service (IaaS and PaaS) to slash costs and improve agility; sales teams licensing their own SaaS CRM systems; or lines of business “going rogue” and sidestepping IT by using apps like Dropbox to facilitate easier file sharing inside and outside the company.
Mobile commerce traffic is surpassing desktop, yet less than 20% of sales in the U.S. are mobile commerce sales. As enterprises engage with Big Data technologies to develop applications needed to meet operational demands, new computation fabrics are continually being introduced. Companies in all industries have been moving some aspects of their operations away from traditional IT and data center functions to the cloud – but usually not everything. Doing so can be somewhat scary, for a myriad of reasons, especially if a company’s cloud strategy isn’t locked up, secure and ironed out ahead of time. More often than not, companies are finding their way to the hybrid cloud – commonly defined as the combination of an on-premise cloud or IT operation and a public cloud service.
