Sure everyone was in agreement about the billions of devices and trillions of dollars in market growth; however, something else was afoot. Nearly all the panelists were in agreement that the free-for-all model of the consumer Internet and mobile markets would not repeat itself. With IoT, the sheer number of devices and their pervasiveness has already put governments and regulators around the world on notice. Here’s the consensus: design your system to support an opt-in model with high security and concerns for privacy otherwise, within the next 5 years, you will be shut-out.

Implementing high performance in enterprise storage is a constant battle to find and eliminate the next system bottleneck. Normally this alternates between limits of the underlying media and the computational overhead of metadata management, but choosing the wrong approach to deduplication can introduce a third performance challenge that can be impossible to overcome. Storage that implements a multi-pass approach to data optimization, such as staged or post-process deduplication, becomes inherently at a disadvantage for both computational and media overhead.

In my role as technology evangelist I spend a lot of time helping organizations, big and small, make their IT systems better, faster and more resilient to faults in order to support their business operations and objectives. I always find it frustrating to “argue” with our competitors about what the best solution is. I honestly think that many APM tools on the market do a good job – each with advantages and disadvantages in certain use cases. There is no “one size fits all” – there is just a “this tool fits best for your APM Maturity Level” (not saying the others wouldn’t do a good job).
This article explores how to detect fraud among online banking customers in real-time by running an ensemble of statistical and machine learning algorithms on a dataset of customer transactions and demographic data. The algorithms, namely Logistic Regression, Self-Organizing Maps and Support Vector Machines, are operationalized using a multi-agent framework for real-time data analysis. This article also explores the cloud environment for real-time analytics by deploying the agent framework in a cloud environment that meets computational demands by letting users’ provision virtual machines within managed data centers, freeing them from the worry of acquiring and setting up new hardware and networks. Real-time decision making is becoming increasingly valuable with the advancement of data collection and analytics techniques. Due to the increase in the speed of processing, the classical data warehousing model is moving toward a real-time model. A platform that enables the rapid development and deployment of applications, reducing the lag between data acquisition and actionable insight has become of paramount importance in the corporate world.

Investors believe that Uber is among a group of mobile app companies capable of disrupting entire industries. They are a data driven start-up enabled by mobile devices. For insight into this innovative and transformative company read their description, "Uber is evolving the way the world moves. By seamlessly connecting riders to drivers through our [mobile] apps, we make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers. Now that is an ambitious "About" statement!
In my last blog, I looked at the evolution of technology as we move to virtualization. What will this new development mean for business models, industry developments and industry players? Virtualization means that everything will run on commodity hardware – the same as the rest of the commercial world. No proprietary equipment, just generic devices and servers running software. Who will build the data centers? Probably the same set of companies that build data centers for everyone else. That is, not necessarily network equipment companies or phone companies. Who will write the software? Presumably the network equipment companies, at first. But the cost of entry into a software-driven industry is much lower than the cost of entry into a hardware-dominated industry. Mass-producing software is far less expensive than mass-producing hardware, so new players will rapidly emerge and some of them will prosper. Just as likely, some of the existing players will not. An industry with thousands of large, medium and small companies has different dynamics than an industry dominated by a few giants.
I was asked by Mr. Peter Hastings (NH DoIT Commissioner) to document the benefits and activities behind the Standardization and Centralization Initiative (SACI). This initiative concerns the standardization of the software configuration management tool, defect tracking tool and standardizing production compiles across the enterprise of state government. In addition this includes the storage of assets for disaster recovery purposes, securing and controlling state source data assets, intellectual property and mission-critical data assets across the enterprise of state government. This article will cover how the State of NH is working to save money in efficiencies related to standardizing and centralizing state data assets. Every state wants to save money for its citizens and stakeholders but saving money in state government can be a very challenging task. The fact that every agency in state government is basically its own separate entity makes this even more difficult. Initiatives of this size and scope can be complicated to implement if agencies don’t understand the value and don’t feel the need to cooperate or collaborate to achieve success and understand that the savings is in their best interest. In today’s economy no one wants to spend any money to achieve any savings to begin with because they don’t have the money to make any capital investments.
A study of 1358 respondents have shown a dramatic rise in cloud adoption over the past few years. North Bridge Venture Partners, in partnership with GigaOm Research have published the results of the 2014 Future Of Cloud Computing Survey – according to this report, SaaS adoption has grown five-fold since the 2011 to 74% today. PaaS, on the other hand, has seen an even higher rate of growth; a six-fold increase over the past four years to 41%.
With the growing number of applications in use in today’s enterprises, you as a network administrator are surely noticing some new challenges. What do a firewall and a fortress have in common? They are no longer strong enough to protect the valuables housed inside. Like the walls of an old fortress, the cracks in the firewall are allowing the bad guys to slip in – unannounced and unnoticed. By the time these thieves get in, the damage is already done and the network is already compromised. Intellectual property is easily slipped out the back door leaving no trace of forced entry. First and foremost you can’t have a successful software-defined model if your team still have a hardware-defined mentality. Change is inevitable and whether it's embraced or not it will happen. For experienced CIOs this is not the first time they've experienced this technological and consequently cultural change in IT. Question 1. Vendors are racing to lead the movement towards a software‐defined data centre. Where are we up to in this journey, and how far are we from seeing this trend widely adopted? Considering most organisations have still not fully virtualized or moved towards a true Private Cloud model, SDDC is still in its infancy in terms of mainstream adoption and certainly won't be an overnight process. While typical early adopters are advancing quickly down the software-defined route these are mostly organizations with large scale multi site data centres who are already mature in terms of their IT processes. Such large scale organisations are not the norm and while the SDDC is certainly on the mindset of senior IT executives, establishing such a model requires several key challenges and tasks.
