2014 Cloud Computing Predictions Round-Up – Part 2

As promised in our earlier post, here are the final predictions we saw making the rounds in the blogosphere at the start of the year. Many are predicting that Microsoft will get more serious about the cloud. Amazon dominated the cloud news in 2013, but 2014 will be a good year for Microsoft and Google, said Dan Sullivan on Search Cloud Computing. "Microsoft is paving the way for hybrid clouds with Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Azure Pack. By the end of 2014, we should have a better understanding of good practices for managing workloads across hybrid Azure clouds. Bernard Golden on CIO echoes the sentiment. "In a way, AWS has had a free ride to this point. Most of its competition has come from the hosting world, and, as noted, is unable to take a software approach to the domain. The inevitable result: AWS has improved, and grown, much more rapidly than other CSPs. That unopposed free run will end in 2014. Both Google and Microsoft have AWS in their crosshairs and are rolling out serious competitive offerings, designed for an all-out battle royale."

Software Testers Too Need a Black Box

Recording and maintaining good evidence of testing is growing more important all the time. The ability to document what actually happened during the development of hardware or software is vital in many industries. Medical equipment is a great example, as any failure could lead to unexpected complications or even death. In the event that this occurs, auditors must be able to review the original manufacturing process and track the usage and maintenance of the machine during its lifecycle. Evidence of testing importance can be neatly summed up by considering the difference between an eyewitness memory and a video of an event. Esrange Space Center Uses Axis Cameras for Safer Space Launches

Esrange Space Centre is a rocket range and research centre located above the Arctic Circle in the north of Sweden, near the mining town of Kiruna. It is owned by SSC, a comprehensive space industry active in many fields of space technology and services, and the base launches sounding rockets and high altitude balloons for scientific research purposes. Safety is paramount at the Esrange Space Center and it has therefore chosen to use Axis’ IP cameras, installed by Axis partner Insupport Nätverksvideo, to get a better operational overview of the base. “We have used Axis cameras for different purposes in the past, and when we decided to integrate cameras into our safety system, all suppliers we contacted recommended Axis cameras. In other words, it wasn’t a difficult decision for us”, says Martin Hedqvist, project manager at Esrange Space Center.

IPOs, IT, and the Future of the Product Development Services Market

For a number of years, analysts at Forrester, Gartner, and other research firms have heralded the growing importance of the product development services (PDS) market in helping companies accelerate time-to-market and product innovation. Forrester analysts John McCarthy and Charles Green published a report last year on a growing trend – that of non-tech companies becoming more and more reliant on software products to connect with consumers. In 2013, IPOs from PDS companies like Globant and Epam brought the growth of the relatively nascent PDS market further into the public spotlight. Globant, which provides outsourced software development services for companies like Google, LinkedIn, and Orbitz, filed for an $86 million IPO in August of last year. Epam, the subject of a Bloomberg article on the proliferation of “Eastern bloc” software development companies, builds software products for companies like Expedia, Sephora, Coca-Cola, and Adidas.

Fabric Engineering Is More than Traffic Engineering

It is human nature to try and relate new information and new ways of doing things to something that we know, something we are familiar with. Often when we talk about the way we fit traffic onto a Plexxi mesh network, the reaction is “I know what you mean, you are doing traffic engineering like we (used to) do in MPLS”. The response to that is usually “kinda, but not really”. In the most basic meaning, everything that has to do with the placement of traffic onto links, routing and forwarding choices being programmed etc would be part of Traffic Engineering. But like too many words and phrases in our networking dictionary, traffic engineering has taken on a very specific meaning, very much related to the way traffic is mapped onto MPLS and like networks. For us, its a bit different. We build ethernet and IP networks that use packet by packet forwarding rules and while individual flows may have a hop by hop crafted path through the network, a very large portion of traffic travels using regular L2 and L3 forwarding tables. We just construct those tables differently than the typical network. Dare I say we engineer the tables to ensure forwarding occurs the way we calculated it to go.

AccelOps Cloud Security Survey: Network Security Trails Behind Cloud Usage

AccelOps on Thursday announced its global survey of 140 IT security professionals found that while cloud usage continues to rise, cloud security remains stagnant. Results indicate that 73 percent of survey respondents are running a greater number of mission-critical applications in the cloud this year, while only 42 percent of respondents’ networks are more secure. The survey was conducted at the recent Cloud Expo 2013 Silicon Valley in Santa Clara, Calif. The survey’s findings underscore the critical need for visibility into security threats. Ninety-two percent of respondents said visibility into potential network threats would be “very important” or “fairly important,” and 77 percent of the respondents’ organizations use multiple tools to monitor security and network performance.

Federated Clouds for Emergency Response

Recent high-profile events (2010 Haitian Earthquake, 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami, 2013 Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda) have highlighted the growing importance played by the international community in successful humanitarian assistance and disaster response. These events also showcased the critical importance of quickly providing robust information technology resources to response effort participants. In June 2010, in support of its continuing effort to foster international collaboration, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) initiated a dialog with the Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium (NCOIC) to discuss this and other aspects of geospatial data information-sharing across the international community. In response to this request the NCOIC through the use of a cloud services brokerage paradigm, built and demonstrated a federated cloud computing infrastructure capable of managing the electronic exchange of geospatial data. The effort also led to the development of the more generalized NCOIC Rapid Response Capability Pattern (NRRC), a process that could improve the effectiveness and reduce the cost of emergency situations that require an international joint civilian/military response.

Breaking Down Enterprise Silos in the Cloud

Are you re-creating existing technology silos in the cloud? If so, your entire enterprise investment in the cloud is at risk. From the perspective of IT, organizational silos seem to be the root of all problems. How to Performance Test Automation for GWT and SmartGWT

This article is based on the experience of Jan Swaelens, Software Architect at Sofico. He is responsible for automatic performance testing of the company’s new web platform based on GWT and SmartGWT. Sofico is specialized in software solutions for automotive finance, leasing, fleet and mobility management companies. About two years ago Sofico started a project to replace its rich desktop application (built with PowerBuilder) with a browseribased rich Internet application. The developers selected GWT and SmartGWT as core technologies to leverage their in-house Java expertise because they believed in the potential of what these (fairly) new technologies had to offer. Their goal was to replace the existing desktop client with a new one that ran in a browser. Their eyes where set on a better user experience and high degree of customization possibilities to give their customers the flexibility and adaptability that they need to run their businesses.

Open Source Innovations for Mobile Application Development

Enterprises need an API tier to meet the demands imposed by mobile technology. The impact of next generation of API servers on mobile and middleware development can be equated to the impact J2EE application servers like WebLogic, JBoss or WebSphere had on web development. It enables enterprises to surface business critical data residing in traditional back ends, databases and service tiers on-premises or on the cloud to multi-channel mobile apps. An API tier is technology “super glue” that ties together endpoints of disparate enterprise systems, then exposing a uniform API to all clients. The clients include web browsers, mobile smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Each has its own set of capabilities and limitations and therefore unique user experiences. An API tier works on top of existing data and services to leverage existing systems in the context of mobile and next-generation clients. It acts as a natural bridge between front end and back end, providing for increased efficiency as well as rapid iteration to meet changing requirements.
