Kweo runs their user engagement platform on a very interesting stack: They use Netty, Apache Kafka, Storm / Trident, Cassandra and ZeroMQ. They run all of their infrastructure on Amazon EC2. One of their most important requirements is Real time User Interaction which obviously requires good performance of their system which leads to good user experience. Knowing whether performance is impacted by the application code, individual components in the stack or the underlying virtualized/cloud infrastructure is a key requirement for them. The following screenshot is taken from their recent engineering blog post that highlights how they manage performance of their distributed real-time data processing system. It shows the flow of transactions through their environment which helps them to automatically detect any types of performance or functional problems that impact their end users.
Introducing SAP is a cost that makes everyone very cautious about the return on this investment. Performance problems with SAP delivery can quickly propagate to seriously affect business operations and lead to tedious war room scenarios. End-user complaints will usually point towards the SAP team, the SAP team will blame the network, and IT operations team will fight back. But what if the root cause of the problem is something altogether different. The inability to quickly determine the root cause of the performance problem often leads to war room scenarios, especially when the money invested in failing applications comes from public funds. Our client, Nimrod, a country-wide government agency from Republic of Razkavia (names changed for commercial reasons) made a decision to implement its key applications based on the SAP infrastructure. When employees from Rosecoast, a harbor city in Razkavia, started to complain about the performance problems with one of the SAP applications, the operations and SAP teams started to investigate the problem.
Faced with competitive pressures demanding increased IT agility, Line-of-Business (LOB) managers have been increasingly relying on virtualized infrastructures to accelerate deployment of critical application workloads. Server virtualization has rapidly become the default platform for modern datacenters with some 50% of all new workloads deployed in a virtual machine (VM). Three key attributes of server virtualization have accelerated this trend. First, excellent server-to-server and resource-to-resource isolation facilitate dynamic sharing of core data center hardware, ensuring that peak demand from one LOB does not affect the service quality for other workloads. Even though they draw from a common pool of shared hardware infrastructure, there is no need for autonomous LOB IT projects to be coordinated if they all run in their own well-isolated virtual environments.

In the first post of this three part series I talked about distributed transactional databases being the Holy Grail of database systems. Among other things the promise of such systems is to provide on-demand capacity, continuous availability and geographically distributed operation. But the historical approaches to building distributed transactional databases have involved unacceptable trade-offs, and as a result general purpose databases systems predicated on a single-server architecture have dominated the industry for decades. In our quest for the Holy Grail of databases we acknowledge that there are folks who have given up on the highly desirable characteristic of transactional consistency in favor of a distributed operation. That is a trade-off that may be attractive if you can’t find a way to scale-out transactions, but it is a drastic choice that moves a lot of complexity and cost up the application stack. If there is a way to scale out transactional databases then that is clearly a much better outcome. Our Holy Grail discussion is specifically about distributed transactional databases because if such a thing can be built without a substantial downside then no one would want any other distributed data store.
Who doesn't love a good zombie flick, right? Hordes of undead ambling around in tattered clothing looking for something to eat. The low, drawn-out moans of a once-productive member of society, who now possesses the brainpower of a teenager on an 8-hour Call of Duty bender. While I don't believe the zombie apocalypse is happening anytime soon (at least not for another six months), there is another form of undead that is very much alive and well today. I'm talking of course about... digital data. We're at the point now where anything you do online leaves a digital footprint, whether it's a photo posted to Instagram, a purchase on Amazon, or a patient intake form completed on an iPad.
In a previous blog we introduced the topic of cloud-as-it-is versus cloud as-we’d like-it-to-be. The cloud services broker (CSB) business model is gaining momentum as one way to turn the cloud into as-we’d-like-it-to-be. CSB is a term used for the activity of brokerage and also for the software that supports that brokerage activity. What is it all about? The Gartner guys have defined it in this way: “CSB is an IT role and business model in which a company or other entity adds value to one or more (public or private) cloud services on behalf of one or more consumers of that service via three primary roles including aggregation, integration and customization brokerage. A CSB enabler provides technology to implement CSB, and a CSB provider offers combined technology, people and methodologies to implement and manage CSB-related projects.”

I personally don’t like the term “War Room” when describing a firefighting situation that many software companies have to deal with when systems go down or have problems. The way these war rooms typically play out is that key personnel (engineers, operations, business) are summoned into a room until the problem is solved. This was the case back with the Apollo 13 mission and still is now when we look at the famous Facebook war room from Dec 2012. What’s the problem with these pictures? There are a lot of people in the room that have no clue whether the problem on hand is actually something they can fix or are responsible for. All of these people are summoned without first figuring out which people should look at the problem. Why is that? Because the collected “evidence” in the form of infrastructure monitoring data, log files, user complaints, etc., just shows symptoms but doesn’t tell us anything about the actual impact and root cause of issues.

I recently came across Gartner research authored by analyst Colin Fletcher about the emergence of Business Value Dashboards (BVDs) that are replacing today’s conventional executive dashboards. When analyst research mentions a developing IT trend, I take note. But I pay special attention when my own experience with customers validates what the analysts are saying. We are still in the early stages but I agree that BVDs are here to stay and will eventually replace today’s bottoms up executive dashboards that, quite frankly, most executives do not use. These first-generation dashboards, driven by existing IT operations monitors, were not focused on the needs of the business owner. They may have shown the status of underlying infrastructure generally, but not specifically as it related to services or revenue-generating applications, or in ways that they could consume the data. I like an analogy used in Gartner’s research: of all the information presented on a car dashboard, what the dashboard highlights should depend on are the context and needs of the driver. A mechanic may care about oil pressure, while the race car driver cares about speed and RPMs.
