Microsoft’s ARM-based Surface tablet will be out October 26, the same day Windows 8 hits the market according to what Microsoft told the SEC in its 10-K filing. Cnet noticed it over the weekend and remembered that Microsoft has said the widgets would be priced “competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC.” So say maybe around $500. The dingus will also bundle an RT-based version of Office. The pricier Intel Ivy Bridge-based Surface Pro is expected 90 days later and could cost $1,000.
Microsoft has reworked its browser-based Hotmail into a free, socialized, Facebook-friendly service it’s calling Outlook.com, borrowing the name from its Office e-mail client. The idea is to stop Google’s Gmail from eating into its turf. With 324 million users Hotmail is the largest online e-mail service on the planet. It has an estimated 36% of the global market to Gmail’s quickly advancing 32%. Yahoo Mail also has 32%. After eight years of neglect, Hotmail has been given a simple Metro-like UI and an uncluttered Googlesque look that’s tailored to small devices as well as PCs and Macs.
Despite its reported immaturity, Rackspace has gone production with the Essex version of OpenStack, making it the first large-scale public cloud deployment of the fabled open source platform. It’s positioning Open Cloud as freeing users from vendor lock-in, a taunt directed at Amazon, Google and Microsoft whose customers it expects to run off. Other OpenStack clouds should follow quickly, say, from HP, Dell and Intel, and since they’ll be look-a-likes users able to flit from one to another. To get the roll-out started Rackspace is offering public, private and hybrid hosting solutions and says there’s unlimited availability of Cloud Databases and both Linux and Windows Cloud Servers on OpenStack. Some mojo called RackConnect will integrate public and private clouds.
As observed in my earlier articles, the Java EE PaaS portfolio is gaining in strength each day, with support from major players such as IBM, Oracle, VMWare, Redhat , Google and Amazon. However unlike the Microsoft > .NET Framework > Azure PaaS equation where there is just one version of the framework from one vendor, the openness of Java EE led to several implementations of application server-specific implementations. As Java EE standards define a core set of API, frame works and features as part of its implementation, an application server is the container that executes these instructions and provides a development and runtime platform for Java EE applications.
The Industrial Revolution began about 250 years ago and machines started to take over for human labor in factories, fields, and mines. It is true that this lead to major economic growth, but machines still replaced the average worker who could not get another job or find a new skill to learn, which hurt many people. The similarity of the situation QA testing finds itself in currently is uncanny. QA was the big savior during the big internet boom - when budgets were virtually unlimited and software was being produced at an exponential rate. However, as the economy bottomed out, budgets deflated, Agile development became more widespread, and software continued soaring, automated testing began taking over. Just as manual labor became more obsolete over time due to the Industrial Revolution, manual QA testing finds itself faced with the same predicament. Let's take a step back and examine how things used to work. Waterfall has always been the method of choice for most software development teams since the 1950's. This methodology allowed for developers to design everything upfront, then focus on their code, pass it on to QA for testing, and get it back with bugs to fix. Over time, systems are upgraded, development methods get better and faster, and we find ourselves producing so much software at such a fast rate, that we need more testers. More testers were hired and developers just got lazier knowing that QA will be there to catch their mistakes.

RPost, the company that owns Registered Email, has gotten two new patents that cover the systems and methods service providers use to track e-mail delivery or failure using server logs. RPost says the protocol-level technology was novel in 1999 when RPost first filed for the patents and widely used today. The new patents are US Patent numbers 8,224,913, granted the week before last, and 8,209,389, granted in June. RPost intends to license them to thousands of e-mail service providers and “vigorously pursue infringement proceedings against unlicensed users.” That includes e-mail marketers, e-mail campaign delivery companies, social media companies, postal operators and cloud-based business applications. It says most e-mail service providers and cloud business applications have begun to differentiate their products by providing more analytics so their customers can measure the success or failure of the delivery of messages.

Starting July 24, CloudPassage will extend its SaaS Halo cloud server security to cloud servers running Windows in public and hybrid cloud environments. The company found in a recent survey that 74% of cloud users are running a mix of both Windows and Linux servers in the cloud. It estimates that Windows servers, which are exposed to exploits such as the recent RDP vulnerabilities announced by Microsoft, make up more than 40% of the public IaaS market. Halo guards against attacks in the cloud and protects RDP and other sensitive services, while automating other Windows cloud server security tasks.
ActiveState has wheeled out Stackato 2.0, its revved application platform for creating a private Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). It fancies it’s a “Ferrari,” claiming it’s “screamingly fast, can turn on a dime, and grips the road in any weather.” That’s good. Maybe that way it’ll be able to pull away from the pack. The PaaS market is starting to look like the New York subway at rush hour. Anyway, the Canadian outfit figures the widgetry redefines PaaS for the enterprise and extends Stackato’s position in “PaaS polyglot compatibility,” a fancy way of saying it can be built out of any language on any stack on any cloud.
Microsoft has colored Windows Server 2012 Azure and white-boxed it for service providers and hosting outfits disenfranchised by Amazon, creating in the process a cloud operating system that it can rattle under the nose of the vCloud-pushing VMware. What it’s done exactly is add Azure-y features to Windows Server so service providers can build Azure-like infrastructure clouds out of their Windows Server data centers and offer turnkey cloud services. They don’t have to use Microsoft’s infrastructure. They can have their own branded IaaS clouds. A newfangled Service Management Portal built into Windows 8’s new Metro user interface can deliver Azure-like services like automated web site hosting, high-scale web sites and Windows or Linux virtual machine hosting. The widgetry’s extensible APIs let developers connect their hosted applications to other people’s specialized services, their own on-premise resources and Windows Azure if they want.

When JBoss 7 was released, those familiar with earlier versions were taken by surprise – many familiar features were gone or completely redesigned. For instance, the JMX Console – a long-time staple of JBoss administration – was missing. While RedHat says JMX is still supported, their focus has clearly shifted – away from JMX and on to a new management indrastructure, specifically designed for JBoss. In this article I will show you how to use the HTTP/JSON Management API along with the Monitis open API to collect JBoss 7 statistics and upload them to Monitis. So let’s get started. After you have installed JBoss 7, you will need to create a management user by invoking the add-user.sh management script as described here. Once the app server is up and running, verify your admin user can login by logging in from the CLI at a shell prompt.
