No matter what type of application we develop, coding validations is our everyday task. For years we have used a big variety of techniques and frameworks for validation with success. However, since some time we have a standard Java for validation, the Bean Validation specification (JSR-303). Billionaire activist shareholder Carl Icahn, who owns about 14.7% of Mentor Graphics, offered to buy the rest of the joint Tuesday for $1.91 billion, or about $17 a share, a 17% premium over its price Friday and 24% better than where it was two weeks ago when Icahn said the EDA ISV should hang out a For Sale sign. He suggested there was a better offer in the wings from strategic bidders with “inherent synergies” that could cut Mentor’s over-the-top overhead, which has been running at half of revenue. Presumably he’s thinking of Mentor rivals Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys. His proposal, conditioned on due diligence and the company dropping its poison pills, effectively creates a bidding floor. It involves no breakup fee that would dissuade another offer.
RPost, which is already suing Swiss Post for the second time in the United States, has upped the ante. Its British arm, RPost UK Ltd, has lodged suit against Swiss Post on its home turf in Switzerland. This time the Los Angeles-based Registered Email merchant is charging the state-owned agency with willfully infringing two of its European patents, both of them validated and recognized in Switzerland. The suit was filed last week in the Commercial Court of Zurich seeking a preliminary injunction against the sale or use Swiss Post’s IncaMail secure e-mail service in or from Switzerland. According to the way they do things there the next inevitable step will be to seek a permanent injunction and damages.
Intel launched its long-in-coming Light Peak widgetry Thursday, renaming the new high-speed bi-directional 10 GBps connection technology Thunderbolt. By comparison UBS 3.0 tops out at 5 Gb/s and the more common UBS 2.0 can only do 480 Mbps. As widely bruited, Apple is its earliest adopter, sporting a Thunderbolt port complete with a lightning icon on its new MacBook Pros, where it will do double duty supporting both high-speed I/O and high-definition Mini DisplayPort devices on a single cable.
They weren’t invited to Barack Obama’s tête à tête dinner with industry luminaries last week in California but AOL co-founder Steve Case, who’s already proved he’s dangerous, and Intel CEO Paul Otellini have been named to the president’s month-old Council on Jobs and Competitiveness headed by GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt. The day after the dinner – hosted by Kleiner Perkins’ John Doerr, also named to the council – Obama did visit Intel’s Oregon plant where Intel said it is going to build a state-of-the-art 300mm plant in Arizona expected to cost at least $5 billion that’ll be the most advanced semiconductor factory in the world. Construction will be finished in 2013. It’ll be able to make 14nm transistors. It’ll mean construction jobs and 4,000 permanent manufacturing jobs.
Last week Victor Grazi made a nice presentation at our Princeton JUG in New Jersey, USA. The title was Java Concurrent Animated, and the entire presentation is a Java application with the GUI illustrating the use of carious classes from the java.util.concurrent package. This was an excellent technical presentation. The usually boring subject was presented in fun and very practical way. The application used during this presentation can serve as a reference guide for Java practitioners dealing with multi-threading.
SAP finally filed its expected protest of what it claims is the “grossly excessive” $1.3 billion jury award to Oracle stemming from Oracle’s suit against SAP and its now-defunct third-party maintenance operation TomorrowNow, which SAP admitted illegally copied Oracle’s IP. SAP thinks it should pay no more than $408.7 million, 10 times more than SAP figured was the most it should pay Oracle during the three-week trial last year. It wants a do-over trial if Oracle won’t take the lower number, which is exactly the amount Oracle’s expert put the company’s damages at.
Google lost its fleeting bid last week to get Oracle’s copyright infringement claims thrown out of court so it won’t be standing there accused of both copyright and patent infringement in the Java-Android suit against it. The judge wouldn’t even let Google file a motion. He isn’t convinced Oracle’s copyright claims don’t have merit. Google can ask again after there’s more discovery, but that’ll take a while. Patent watcher Florian Mueller found Oracle’s successfully opposing letter “the single most interesting document in this whole lawsuit to date as far as the copyright part of the case is concerned.”

The tests include a number of scenarios for both Publish/Subscribe (Topics) and Point to Point (Queue) message scenarios, stressing out the JMS Servers in a variety of simulated real-world scenarios. These JMS tests and test harness have been the international standard for JMS testing since 2003.
Cisco, which needs to shore up its operations after three disappointing quarters, is ripping up its e-mail. After 13 months of trying to elbow into hosted e-mail with a controlled test market release, it’s abandoning the SaaS project saying something about learning “that customers have come to view their email as a mature and commoditized tool versus a long-term differentiated element of their collaboration strategy. We’ve also heard that customers are eager to embrace emerging collaboration tools such as social software and video.”
The Apache Tuscany team is pleased to announce the 2.0-Beta2 release of the Java SCA 2.0 project. Apache Tuscany/SCA provides a runtime environment based on Service Component Architecture (SCA), which is a set of OASIS specifications aimed at simplifying SOA application development. This is the second beta release on our way to a full 2.0 release. It contains improvements on a number of modules, dependency upgrades and continues the effort of module reorganization started with the Beta1 release. New features include an interactive shell to work with SCA domains, contributions and services.
Recently had a problem where Import/Export was not working. I kept getting an interesting Error Message. What was really interesting about this was the user that was referenced, mxmc_admin. Now this is interesting, because during the Identity Store creation process, you are prompted to use mxmc_rt as the user and there is no time during the install that you are asked to create a JAVA based connection string using mxmc_admin. This started a great deal of troubleshooting and conversations with people who have a great deal of knowledge with IDM's moving parts. Ultimately we wound up looking at the options in IDM's MMC interface.
Jahia, a provider of web content integration software that combines web, document, and portal features, and their Swedish partner Signifikant, recently released their Signifikant eArchive. This software creates a standard-based archiving solution for governments and corporations, making open government easily achievable by deploying entities. Open government is the governing doctrine which holds that the business of government and state administration should be open to all levels of public scrutiny and oversight. However, many government entities do not understand how easily this doctrine is to be realized with the right content management software for their websites. The new eArchive solution enables national and state governments and other organizations to meet long-term preservation requirements following Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) standards, and provides easy access for researchers and the public.
The EXISTS keyword in SQL queries is an efficient mechanism for returning record sets from one dataset when they exist in another dataset. For example we can write queries like:

....which returns all organisations which have a related event whose contact is Eddie Harris.
ADF Business Components in JDeveloper 11g allow the creation of EXISTS subqueries via the View Object named View Criteria feature. They're easy to implement if you already know how to create View Criteria, as long as you know one small trick.

Given the SQL query above using the one-to-many organisations-to-events example, imagine we have default Entity Objects (EOs), EO Associations, View Objects (VOs) and VO Links, as seen in this picture:

When created via the Business Components from Table wizard, the VO Link OrgEvtFkLink created, based on the EO Association OrgEvtFkAssoc, will include Accessors options under its Relationship tab in the VO Link editor:
If you select the pencil icon next to the Accessors options it reveals the View Link Properties dialog:
....from which you can see the "Generate Accessor" option selected for the "In View Object: Organisations View". While the selected state is the default option when created, it's this option which is essential for setting up the EXISTS View Criteria.

Once you've ensured the Accessor option is set as described above, when you create a new View Criteria for the View Object, Organisations in our case, we configure the View Criteria as follows. First in the Create View Criteria dialog we should change the View Criteria name to something more suitable to reflect what the View Criteria will do for us:
Next select the Add Criteria button, which will create the basis of the expression used by the query:
On selecting the Attribute drop down, you'll discover a list of attributes from the OrganisationsView VO. In this list you'll note an attribute called "EventsView". This attribute is only available because of the options you configured in the View Object Link Accessors above. If you hadn't gone with the default options, the EventsView attribute would not be available, and you would not be able to create the EXISTS View Criteria:
With the EventsView Accessor selected the dialog for the first time shows the EXISTS clause:
The only think left to do is to select the Criteria Group expression of the EXISTS statement, in the example above this is the "Event No =" option, and change this using the supplied options in the fields below, to the actual expression we want to use in the EXISTS clause. From our example this is matching the Events Contact Name to a String:
Once completed in the right hand side you can see the EXISTS subquery that the View Criteria will apply to the OrganisationsView VO when executed.
Note I've also turned off the Ignore Case and Ignore Null Values options.

Google asked the US Patent and Trademark Office Tuesday to re-examine four of the seven broad Java patents that Oracle has accused Google of infringing in Android, its Dalvik virtual machine and Android SDK (Patents No. 5,966,702; 6,061,520; 6,125,447 and RE 38,104). Oracle also charged Google with copyright infringement. Westerman Hattori Daniels & Adrian partner Scott Daniels, a patent attorney who discovered the ex parte request and blogged about it, observed that “It is quite possible that Google will soon request re-examination of the remaining three Oracle America [Sun] patents. Google might request that the trial judge, Judge William H. Alsup, stay the case pending completion of the re-examination proceedings, but such a stay might not be granted since Google and Oracle America are direct competitors and since re-examination could not resolve the copyright allegations.”
In its first acquisition of the new Apotheker administration – which is expected to bulk up on enterprise software – HP is buying Vertica Systems, the six-year-old real-time analytic database start-up in Massachusetts begun by serial entrepreneur and database brand name Michael Stonebreaker. Its stuff analyzes massive amounts of columnar data, produces “just-in-time” business intelligence, supports Hadoop, and runs on commodity hardware in physical, virtual and cloud environments. HP, which will add its brand and global reach to the effort, expects to leap ahead in the race to analyze massive amounts of data. It will presumably replace the late NeoView in its affections.
Skytap, the self-service cloud peddler, claims its users can now provision a self-service hybrid cloud in less than 10 minutes using a secure, two-way connection between their data center and Skytap’s virtual public infrastructure. Usually setting up a hybrid cloud is a complex, time-consuming, pricey exercise, requiring days of coding, altogether a barrier to adoption. Skytap says it’s reduced the hocus-pocus to a point-and-click GUI used to set up, test and configure IPSec connections between Skytap and the private data center.
Novell said late Thursday that it had gotten stockholder approval for its $6.10-a-share acquisition by Attachmate. Novell still needs US and German antitrust clearance to sell its patents to a consortium of Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and EMC. The acquisition hinges on it. Novell said it is still collecting the information the Justice Department asked for in a second request for information a couple of weeks ago. That second request to both Novell and the consortium came after the Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation complained.

Pretty much still an Intel loyalist, Dell admittedly acted out of character Monday and wheeled out a high-end AMD Magny-Cours server, claiming to have put more cores, more memory and more I/O in a humble little 2U than anyone ever has. It said it could not get its kind of 96-core density with Intel and that’s before AMD pushes out Bulldozer and Interlagos. The head of Dell’s research computing Tim Carroll and its newfangled Poweredge C product manager Armando Acosta said it makes no never mind with users if it’s Intel or AMD when they have no more power or real estate left and their lust for compute cycles is still unfulfilled.
They say you can’t predict the weather. Like so many clichés, however, this one isn’t quite true. Meteorologists have a host of tools at their fingertips that help them recognize, track and analyze weather patterns in order to support predictions that are often accurate, or at least reasonably close. The same is true in the computing industry, where patterns emerge in data centers and enterprises much as cloud formations become apparent in the skies. With a careful eye and extensive knowledge informed by years of experience and frequent conversations with frontline IT professionals, we can predict future trends with a relatively high degree of accuracy. The beginning of a new decade is an opportune moment in which to forecast where virtualization – the primary IT initiative of our time – will encounter stormy weather and where it might be welcomed by clear skies.
