AMD CEO Dirk Meyer says he doesn't know how anybody could call a bottom - like Intel CEO Paul Ottellini did last week - given the continued lack of visibility and uncertainty in the marketplace. Although Intel is expecting Q2, usually down from Q1, to be flat with Q1 - a forecast implies a very unseasonal uptick - AMD just expects revenues to be down this quarter because of the macro environment, visibility and seasonal weakness.
And to think, had IBM "gone mad" and offered a few more billions, it might have saved itself potential billions and billions and billions of lost revenue.

How fast should our Java code be to be considered fast? After all, speed is a relative concept. I'll compare the results of CPU performance for the following JVMs: Sun's J2SE 1.4.1, 1.4.0, 1.3.1, and Jikes. These results can be used to make a number of educated decisions such as choosing a JVM, deciding on algorithmic designs, and selecting the right method from the API. They provide an overall assessment of performance that's not custom related since the code used is quite common and drawn directly from Sun's Java APIs.

In a recent report published by Gartner, the market research firm outlined the tremendous opportunity for global cloud services projecting revenues to increase 21 percent this year alone. According to Gartner cloud-based offerings made $46.4 billion in 2008, a number that is projected to increase to $56.3 billion in 2009 and $150.1 billion by 2013. I wrote in my previous article, “Interactive Storyboarding with JSP,” that interactive storyboarding is an effective way to define better requirements by eliciting actual business user needs. And I proposed to describe the requirements inJSPs with the J-CASE tag library, which enables business to experience conceptual pages to get a better understanding of the proposed system. As a next step, this article proposes to create a storyboard library that can be reused among projects. This article also shows that aspect weaving makes customization of the library easier to describe application-specific requirements.
Google's now year-old App Engine infrastructure, previously limited to running only programs written in a particular species of Python, a less-than-mainstream tongue but an internal Google favorite, is learning to accept programs written in Java. With the move, Google is reaching out to a broader base and interfacing with what it acknowledges are "businesses' existing technologies."
