Spime has released JSR-293, a standard API to access mapping, geocoding, reverse geocoding, navigation and POI content and services. Spime’s implementation of JSR 293 is compliant with the Java Community Process, and provides standardized access to LBS services from Java ME applications that dramatically simplify the development of location-based mobile applications. Spime JSR-293 extends JSR-179 Location API, enabling it to work on JSR-179-supported phones that have sufficient memory and processing power. The JSR-293 is targeted for MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1-enabled devices with the availability of JSR -82 or JSR- 179 API.
When looking for a language to modernize legacy applications, Java is a strong and viable contender. It offers portability, maintainability, extensibility, and cost effectiveness. The JCP’s annual elections for our Executive Committees (ECs) are now complete. As a reminder, during the first round the following members were nominated by Sun and ratified by the community: Nokia, Philips, and IBM for the Java ME EC; and Ericsson, SpringSource, and SAP for the Java SE/EE EC. In the second round of the elections, during which all members are free to nominate themselves, voters had to choose two members for each EC.

Sun Microsystems announced the availability of the JavaFX Mobile platform, enabling the Java wireless ecosystem to create expressive solutions, which leverage the power and ubiquity of the Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME). The JavaFX Mobile platform delivers rich content and services across a range of mobile devices – from mass market feature phones to smart phones. Sun also announced that several leading handset manufacturers, service providers and ISVs are working with Sun to ship JavaFX Mobile handsets.

Over the past few years the industry has lauded, and users have increasingly adopted, a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach to the development and deployment of their IT to achieve greater business agility and optimization of the associated development and operating costs. When discussing SOA, much of that discussion normally focuses on either the role and value of a “governance” process to manage the lifecycle of a SOA deployment and the use of a metadata repository to contain and control the artifacts associated with that governance process, or the central role that an enterprise service bus plays in the transformations between, and the routing of invocations, of services.
All organizations, including multinational corporations and government agencies, face a common problem of enterprise data integration. Obviously, large-scale sources of the problem stem from mergers and acquisitions. When a large company is formed from other pieces, each brings with it its own data, in its own form. But the problem isn’t restricted to large conglomerates.
In this article we'll look at using scripting tools and languages in business applications. I am a big proponent of using scripting languages. Personally I use JavaScript very often: Why? Because it's fast, flexible and sexy. Technically, when I refer to JavaScript I actually mean ECMAScript, but I'll call it JavaScript in this article as it sounds sexier than the official standard ECMAScript.
I’m writing this article on the day before the US presidential Election. As happens, we’re also in the middle of the JCP’s annual election cycle. Our elections consist of two phases. The first round, during which members vote for three ratified seats on each Executive Committee (EC), has recently been completed. The software industry is often obsessed with progress be it in the form of a new language, wire protocol, specification update, or some other technology-driven feature. For me, software is a means to an end, and progress should be measured in features that allow code to be written more efficiently, with fewer errors, and with an increased fitness of purpose. To this end, the single thing that has most changed the way I view and approach Java is the JUnit framework.
OpenSocial defines a common API for social applications across multiple websites. Built from standard JavaScript and HTML, developers can create applications with OpenSocial that access a social network’s friends and update feeds. The goal of this article is to demo a sample Pet Store application written in JavaFX 1.0. I work for a company called Farata Systems. Laura is our office manager, and she doesn’t know Java. Everyone else does. We work in the enterprise RIA space using Adobe Flex as a main development tool for creating all these Web pages connecting to the server side applications written in Java.
Sun has lost the stickiness test. MySQL boss Marten Mickos, the operation’s former CEO and senior VP of Sun’s database group since its acquisition almost exactly one year ago, is following co-founder and MySQL’s original developer Monty Widinius out the door. Ray Roxas-Chua leads the Philippines government's information and communications technology (ICT) initiatives. In the wake of the Satyam scanda in Inida, it seems the potential to outsource to the Philippines instead has grown. I interviewed him in late 2008. The interview occurred before the Satyam scandal in India, which in my view threatens to disrupt all outsourcing growth in India, perhaps to the benefit of other countries, including the Philippines.
Ideum has announced the release of a ruggedized multi-touch, multi-user table built specifically for museums. The MT Table supports multi-touch and multi-user interactions. It has a 50" (diagonal) surface with a high resolution 1280 x 720 display. The large display also makes it easier to facilitate multiple simultaneous visitors interacting with cogestures to manipulate images or media or to interact with computer-based programs. The table, which stands 31" tall with heavy-duty locking casters, is wheel-chair accessible and meets standard ADA requirements for height. The table is automated and can safely shut itself down.
