Sun Microsystems has announced the expansion of its disk storage portfolio with two new high-performance disk storage arrays that enable customers to consolidate workloads within the same data center footprint for greater efficiency. The new Sun Storage 6580 and 6780 modular arrays complement a range of server architectures, including Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 systems running the Solaris Operating System. The Sun Storage 6580 and 6780 Arrays help enterprise customers upgrade their storage infrastructure to scale storage needs within the same power and space envelope. The new Sun Storage 6580 and 6780 arrays are ideal for midrange and high-end enterprise and throughput-intensive workloads that target database and enterprise-email applications and add enterprise management tools at no cost through the Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager software. Customers have already started to leverage Sun’s upgrade and trade-in programs, which uncover hidden equity in a customer’s current IT infrastructure by giving trade-up allowances for both Sun and competitor products. Sun lost $209 million, 28 cents a share, in the December quarter, half way through its fiscal year, because of a $222 million restructuring charge that it’s taking to cover the firing of those 5,000-6,000 people, the 15%-18% of its workforce it vowed to terminate back in November. The latest round of layoffs started this week, reportedly targeting 1,300 folks.

Intel, that industry bellwether, reported its fourth quarter and the results were no worse than it warned they’d be when it reduced its expectations for the second time. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear there’ll be any relief this quarter. Uncertainty runs so deep that Intel is leery about issuing formal guidance figuring “actual results could differ materially from expectations.”

Javaground announced a new component of its Xpress Suite allowing developers to automatically generate a native iPhone program from a Java source code. Traditionally, developers target the iPhone by re-writing their Java source code in Objective C. Now, their existing Java code can be reused and automatically converted to create high-performance iPhone games and applications.
Sun Microsystems announced that SAP has signed a multi-year agreement with Sun to provide Java Platform Standard Edition for Business (Java SE for Business) to its customers using the SAP NetWeaver technology platform. This will allow SAP customers to continue using Java SE 1.4.2 on both Windows and Linux platforms while still having Sun support and indemnification.
When a product a colleague worked on recently shipped its first generally available release, the event was accompanied by a marketing fanfare of podcasts, press releases, and conference trips to beautiful cities with boxes of presentation materials, branded lapel pins, and flashing fridge magnets. My colleague gave a hugely successful presentation to customers and was rather taken aback afterwards when she was approached by a member of her company’s marking team who asked why it looked as though the development team hadn't done that much to the product since the last presentation six months previously.
Three Pillar Software concluded 2008 with a strategic merger and a tactical acquisition designed to provide the company with significantly enhanced infrastructure and consulting services. According to Three Pillar CEO David DeWolf, the merger with Firefly allows Three Pillar to go to market as a complete IT services provider. Firefly founder Blaine Hall, named executive vice president of infrastructure services for Three Pillar, noted that the Three Pillar/Firefly merger allows the company to authoritatively enter the federal marketplace since more than 95 percent of Firefly's revenue was based on U.S. Department of Defense contracts.
Structured Web Technologies has announced dWebSpec, which provides modeling templates for specification and construction of dynamic web applications. dWebSpec provides a standard way to write blueprints and to capture the various aspects of dynamic web applications such as: user interface, page composition, data presentation and mapping, event handling and parameter passing, navigation paths and rules, and other areas. dWebSpec introduces a means of representing the specifications of applications that could be implemented on various platforms such as Java.
Sun Microsystems announced it has acquired Q-layer, a cloud computing company that automates the deployment and management of both public and private clouds. The Q-layer organization, based in Belgium, will become part of Sun's Cloud Computing business unit. The Q-layer technology simplifies cloud management and allows users to provision and deploy applications, a key component in Sun's strategy to enable building public and private clouds.
Sun, which has got a speckled record, to say the least, with acquisitions has acquired Q-layer, a three-year-old cloud computing company in Belgium that automates the deployment and management of both public and private clouds. Sun said the undisclosed price was not material. Since it started Q-logic raised what is now worth about $11.5 million in two rounds from VCs Partech International, Wellington Partners and Big Bang Ventures. The operation, whose development folk have been in Cairo, will become part of Sun’s Cloud Computing business unit, which is supposed to develop and integrate cloud computing technologies, architectures and services.

Palm has unveiled its Palm webOS mobile platform, to be constantly connected to the web, and the new Palm Pre, the phone based on the new platform. Palm webOS is a platform invented exclusively for mobile use. It automatically brings your information from the many places it resides - on your phone, at your work or on the web - into one integrated view. webOS leverages several industry-standard technologies, including web technologies such as CSS, XHTML and JavaScript. The new platform was designed to allow an ecosystem of partners, including developers, hardware suppliers, and accessories manufacturers, to develop core solutions to complement the platform and product line. For developers, webOS offers an open development environment. The platform's flexible environment will also allow developers to distribute their applications over-the-air via an on-device Palm application store.
