I was reading an article today that discusses managing “mission-critical” applications. I really dislike that term. It’s trite, it’s dated – even nonsensical. It suggests that applications fall into two groups – mission-critical, and…optional? marginal? unnecessary? one step away from being voted off the island? Here’s the fallacy with that view – people that run IT organizations are smart, and they invest in stuff that matters to the business. They don’t run apps that don’t provide value because they excel at cost-efficiency. So the notion that relatively few apps are actually worth managing is illogical. Even email, the poster child for apps at the bottom of the food chain, is essential to the operation of a 21st century organization – it’s how they stay organized.
All clouds are not equal. Given the popularity of the containers, further investment in the telco/cable industry is needed to transition existing VM-based solutions to containerized cloud native deployments. I recently read something – a blog, a tweet, a LinkedIn article perhaps – describing the use of wire data to analyze application performance. I remember that the author’s use of the term “APM” in this context caused one reader to comment, complaining that “you can’t call wire data APM.” This was around the same time I referred casually to Dynatrace’s wire data offering (Data Center Real User Monitoring, or DC RUM) as both “APM for IT Operations” and “probe-based APM.” So that complaint has stuck with me, prompting me to ask – and offer an answer to – the question.
The network is at the core of every business, yet the majority of today’s networks were not designed to handle the next generation of business requirements. More than two decades ago the world standardized on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) / Internet Protocol (IP) stack and little innovation has taken place in routing since. Modern networks are built upon the same fundamental protocols established before anyone could envision current demands. This has given rise to an entire industry surrounding routers aimed at delivering bolt-on functionality such as firewalls and load balancers. This approach has resulted in outages and data breaches for businesses as these jerry-rigged networks continue to grow too complex, too fragile and too expensive to deliver the security, control and agility needed for cloud, mobile and IoT applications.
