[whitepaper] Driving #DigitalTransformation | @CloudExpo @IBMSystems #IoT

Information technology is an industry that has always experienced change, and the dramatic change sweeping across the industry today could not be truthfully described as the first time we've seen such widespread change impacting customer investments. However, the rate of the change, and the potential outcomes from today's digital transformation has the distinct potential to separate the industry into two camps: Organizations that see the change coming, embrace it, and successful leverage it; and on the other side, organizations that will find themselves as roadkill on the technology highway.

[slides] Speed Your #DigitalTransformation | @CloudExpo @Apcela #IoT #AI #BigData

Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cloud, and create a digital technology platform. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Mark Casey, President and CEO of CFN Services, discussed how disruptive enterprises are enabling highly distributed, software-defined architectures that fuel innovation and growth.

What Are Beacons and Why Do They Matter? | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API #Beacons

Walk through an airport or a shopping mall and you may notice little pieces of information popping up: “Flight delayed at gate G5”; “Stop into our shop right now and receive up to 20 percent off your order”; etc. Did you sign up for those notifications? Most likely not, but don’t worry, your phone hasn’t been hacked. The notifications are a result of beacon technology.

Making Healthcare the Way It Should Be | @CloudExpo #IoT #M2M #Cloud #BigData #MachineLearning

Interoperability continues to be one of healthcare IT’s biggest trends in 2016 as the industry sees momentous forward movement. In fact, interoperability is not a new trend. It has been an important mission (and a challenge) for healthcare administrators for decades, but the past couple of years have been game-changing. First, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) wants interoperability to be a common feature in all EHRs by 2024 so that patient data can be shared across systems to provide better care at a lower cost. Since the 2009 passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), a $30 billion initiative to accelerate EHR adoption, more than 433,000 professionals (95 percent of eligible hospitals and 60 percent of eligible professionals in Medicare and Medicaid programs) have received incentive payments.

Big Challenges of #BigData | @CloudExpo @Gemalto #Security #AI #ML #DL

Between 2005 and 2020, data volumes will grow by a factor of 300 – enough data to stack CDs from the earth to the moon 162 times. This has come to be known as the ‘big data’ phenomenon. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to handling, storing and analyzing data aren’t adequate at this scale: they’re too costly, slow and physically cumbersome to keep up. Fortunately, in response a new breed of technology has emerged that is cheaper, faster and more scalable. Yet, in meeting these new needs they break many of the traditional security approaches on which enterprises depended. In these massive data volumes, how are organizations going to ensure that their customer information is safe from people looking to exploit it? Is it possible to adopt big data technologies while demonstrating compliance with industry regulations? Will security get in the way of the analytics tools organizations need to make this data useful?

Moving Fast with Microservices | @KubeSUMMIT #DevOps #CloudNative #Serverless #Docker #Kubernetes #Microservices

As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components. This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and micro services. While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your containers from your laptop to the cloud. How do we build software for containers? How do we ship containers? How do we do all of it without shooting ourselves in the foot?

[slides] #M2M #IoT Communications | @ThingsExpo @Citrix #RTC #WebRTC

Fifty billion connected devices and still no winning protocols standards. HTTP, WebSockets, MQTT, and CoAP seem to be leading in the IoT protocol race at the moment but many more protocols are getting introduced on a regular basis. Each protocol has its pros and cons depending on the nature of the communications. Does there really need to be only one protocol to rule them all? Of course not. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Chris Matthieu, co-founder and CTO of Octoblu, walked through how Octoblu solved this problem by building an open source, cross-protocol IoT M2M instant messaging platform utilized by thousands of users and companies to allow disparate devices to communicate seamlessly with each other and other platforms.
