Performance is the elusive butterfly of API development. Everybody is intrigued with its beauty, yet few know how to capture it. In the old days, the approach of many shops to ensure a performant API was to create some code and then pass it over to the wall to QA to do load testing. Later some integration testing took place. As long as the API worked and it was met some marginal performance benchmarks, things were good. This worked well when a public, HTTP based API, consumed by a wide variety of distributed devices was more the exception than the rule. However, today APIs are a big deal and they are everywhere, so much so that companies are posting very big infographics prominently in the front page of the New York Times to create even more awareness about the technology to the general public.

Call it DevOps or not, if you are concerned about releasing more code faster and at a higher quality, the resulting software delivery chain and process will look and smell like DevOps. But for existing development teams, no matter what the velocity objective is, getting from here to there is not something that can be done without a plan. Moving your release cadence from months to weeks is not just about learning Agile practices and getting some automation tools. It involves people, tooling and a transition plan. Microservices-based environments are more complex than their monolithic counterparts. To operate microservices environments with the same level of convenience that you’ve come expect from operating self-contained monolithic application environments, you need to have the right tools in place and rely on best practices that will keep your microservices healthy. We’ve noticing an increasing number of microservices environments deployed by our customers, and the trend only seems to be increasing. We recently asked some of these customers about their experiences. Most of their responses were in line with expectations. Two issues however caught us by surprise.

It’s safe to assume that the majority of all Internet of Things (IoT) devices operate near large populations of people. Of course, right? This is where the action happens – smart devices, smart cars, smart infrastructure, smart cities, etc. Plus, the cost of getting “internet-connected” in these areas is relatively low – public access to Wi-Fi is becoming widely available, cellular coverage is blanketed over cities, etc.

Software as a Service has been around for a while. In its early years—late 1990s-early 2000s—it was mostly aimed at individual and departmental use, but in more recent years SaaS has been deployed at the enterprise level. There are companies that don’t use anything else. In the beginning, SaaS was used by companies more for productivity applications like web conferencing, managing travel expenses and sales contacts, or time-tracking than for core business applications.
If you address the question of how to scale Agile projects by considering what framework to use, you are only looking at one aspect of the problem. Scaling is all about coordination – managing enterprise considerations and cross program dependencies, and the defacto frameworks (SAFe, LeSS and DAD) focus on the people and process dimensions. However, in combination with a factory approach you may be able to automate many of the compliance and dependency management issues.

Panzura has announced the results of its “State of Manufacturing Cross Site-CAD Collaboration” survey conducted at SOLIDWORKS World 2016. The survey details the top challenges that manufacturing professionals face when working within Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and design applications across sites. More than 5,000 manufacturing professionals attended SOLIDWORKS World 2016, with a significant portion participating in the “State of Manufacturing Cross-Site CAD Collaboration” survey. The survey revealed that many organizations struggle collaborating across locations with CAD applications due to long wait times for files to update, incorrect data, data loss, or versioning and replication issues.
These days I mostly make my living as a consultant. Consultants in general are probably not the best loved group in the world. It is common to think of consultants wafting-in to your organization, telling you things that you already know and advising you to “change your culture”, whatever that means. Subsequently they depart, no-doubt with a fat fee, and leave you as you were before with the same problems and no progress made.
