This well-worn business doctrine, I have come to believe in this age of digital transformation, is wrong and it is time to repudiate it. Let me support my argument by first asking a few questions. What came first e-commerce or the Internet? What came first mobile commerce, or wireless mobile communications? What came first the commercial airline industry or the airplane? What came first armored knights being used as shock troops, or stirrups? Stirrups of course! Technology innovations have a long history of appearing first, and then doctrines evolving slowly later. What we are learning, however, is if your outdated business doctrines are dictating the speed of your technology adoptions - you are in big trouble! It was early in game two of the million-dollar Google DeepMind Challenge Match, and AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence (AI) system developed by Google, placed its 19th stone on a part of the game board that no human Go master would have considered. The question of who owns the data is partly determined by the kind of cloud infrastructure that is in place for your business. The advantages that cloud based hosting brings needs to reiteration. Cloud hosting is infinitely scalable, needs radically lower CapEx and with distributed hosting, it is much more fail-proof than data hosted on your premise. But the recent legal spar between Apple and the US government has brought the limelight once again back on the debate about ownership of data. In the case of Apple, the fight is over decrypting the iPhone used by a criminal in order for the government to hack in. But the case may as well be between law enforcement and a web host over data stored by your customers on your startup service.

If you’re not employing DevOps tools and methods, chances are your software delivery deployment practices look something like this: It takes you weeks, sometimes months to deploy new software to production. You test for bugs and try to pinpoint why your deployment only works in the development environment and not the production one. Because your development and operational teams are separated, there is a lack of clear communication and instruction between the two, leading to a wide range of inefficiencies.

The rise of microservices has enabled teams to branch out from developing for innately complicated, monolithic applications and work with small, flexible and comparatively simple components. But when these components (numbering anywhere from the hundreds to the thousands for one application) need to work together, traditional tools and release processes can be lacking. Organizations need to adopt new delivery models, release strategies and tooling that can handle this new multitude of services and their dependencies.
