"Internet-of-Things" (IoT) is touted as the next big thing slated to revolutionize how we communicate online or how we work. The majority of the chatter rising from industries nowadays is focused on how to deploy machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and optimally capitalize on the technology. Simply put, IoT is built on the paradigm of cloud computing and data gathering sensors networks. Hence, it provides instantaneous and mobile virtual connection. Proponents of the technology believe that within a few years IoT will make even the smallest speckle of technology in our lives, "smart'. Be it seaports or road transport systems, soon IoT will transform them into sectors driven by smart technologies.
The battle over bimodal IT is heating up. Now that there’s a reasonably broad consensus that Gartner’s advice about bimodal IT is deeply flawed – consensus everywhere except perhaps at Gartner – various ideas are springing up to fill the void. The bimodal problem, of course, is well understood. ‘Traditional’ or ‘slow’ IT uses hidebound, laborious processes that would only get in the way of ‘fast’ or ‘agile’ digital efforts. The result: incoherent IT strategies and shadow IT struggles that lead to dispersed, redundant, and risky technology choices across the organization. The battle, however, isn’t over the problem. It’s over what we should do about it. Perhaps we should add a third mode?
I recently caught up with a former co-worker who now runs an information security program for a well-known retailer. While discussing new advances in cloud security and technology, he mentioned that his company had met with a provider that presented him with a mind-numbing number of deployment options for their solution. Some of the options rattled off included forward and reverse proxies; public, private, hybrid, and cloud versions of their product; an on-premise version; and packaging in an appliance or a box that could be racked in a data center.
Al Hilwa, program director of application development software at IDC, describes it this way: “Microservices is an architectural approach that draws on long, evolving experience in software engineering and system design, including the SOA efforts of the last two decades. The-challenges-of-scaling-microservicesMicroservices architecture is enabled by a spectrum of tool categories, but is primarily an architectural approach to system design that also requires considerable organizational and cultural adjustment to execute successfully.” More succinctly, microservices is a blanket term that applies to breaking IT systems and applications down to smaller, more granular elements. Containers take applications and services down to a self-contained, component level, and DevOps provides the framework for the IT infrastructure and automation to develop, deploy, and manage the environment.

Everything will be on the cloud. It almost sounds like overstatement even in 2016 doesn’t it? Could we really get ourselves to the point where we regard the cloud layer as our first, primary, default and de facto location for data? The answer is: yes, we do already… although perhaps not all of us have even realized it yet. When we do start to fully appreciate what the cloud computing layer of data storage and application services can really do for us, we will find ourselves almost ‘set free’ from our previous notions of how we use the computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones that we regard as our most trusted devices today.

In the previous blog I did a high-level overview of Angular 2 router and wrote a basic routing application that demonstrated displaying different components in a predefined area of the window. We often need not only display a component, but also pass some data to it. For example, if we navigate from the Home to the Product Detail route we need to pass the product ID to the destination route. Angular offers a directive RouteParams so a route can receive data from the parent component. There is also a RouteData directive that can be used to pass additional data to a route from the @RouteConfig section. I’ll illustrate the use of both directives by modifying the app from the previous blog.

According to the results of a new global study, commissioned by CA Technologies, 72% of organizations have implemented some aspect of DevOps but when the study took a closer look at the numbers, only 20% of DevOps users have put all the parts in place to reap the full benefits of DevOps. I often write about the Internet of Things, or the soon-to-be-cliché IoT. You know, the smart-fridges, smart-cars, smart-thermostats, healthcare devices, wearables and any of those connected devices that have a sensor, gathers data and reports back to some entity. You are able to control these devices (and see the data) with mobile apps or even your own voice and gestures. They are all the rage and sitting at the top of the Gartner Hype Cycle. But it’s all the various sensors inside those devices that are doing the actual measuring, calculating, tracking and reporting. Each has its own specialty providing specific functionality. I’ve always wondered about what’s inside some of the wearables so let’s take a look at a few.
