Ten years ago, when I drove on Winchester Avenue in Los Gatos, I saw this new company called Netflix that was renting DVDs of movies. You didn't have to go to a store, but could sign up for home delivery service of DVDs. Now Netflix is building a much bigger headquarters near its old site. It is a huge success story – a disruption to the home entertainment business. When it decided to switch to “streaming only” a few years back, there were lot of doubters. But that’s all in the past. It is a global company now with huge success as a business.
SDN / NFV may not be new with next gen telcos and data centers but by 2016 it is certainly going to be the new beast in DevOps space. It's a multi-million dollar virgin market, so it's not only those traditional OEMs are in the fray even the DB companies will be entering this new market. Telcos and Data center wants a vendor agnostic network devices and are expected to replace all physical devices including those routers and switches with software devices. This not only drastically brings down the PCB replacement costs and other maintenance charges but the latest release automation tools and technology of DevOps will do radical changes by reducing the overall current service provisioning time from 4-5 months to few hours. In the near future the network administration may not require to have niche skill sets to manage large networks because the latest zero touch release automation technology with GUI based orchestration dashboard will do the network configuration.
For manufacturers, the Internet of Things (IoT) represents a jumping-off point for innovation, jobs, and revenue creation. But to adequately seize the opportunity, manufacturers must design devices that are interconnected, can continually sense their environment and process huge amounts of data. Docker Swarm is a cluster manager for Docker. When accessed via the Docker API by Docker API Clients or Docker command line tools, a Docker Swarm cluster looks just like a single Docker Host. Docker Swarm distributes containers to multiple nodes using various deployment strategies in the cluster scheduler. Having in mind that a Swarm cluster looks like a single Docker Host from the API point of view, it should be very easy to monitor Docker Swarm with existing Docker monitoring tools! Connecting a monitoring agent to the Swarm Master API endpoint should do the job, right? Seismic monitoring tends to pop up in the news only during disaster situations, or, more recently, in conjunction with North Korea’s possible detonation of a hydrogen bomb. Earlier in 2015, The New Yorker ran a piece, “The Really Big One,” looking at the probability of a large earthquake destroying the Pacific Northwest. The earthquake off the coast of Japan in 2011 triggered one of the largest nuclear plant meltdowns of recent history, the impact of which we are still dealing with today. Point being, the typical association with seismic monitoring – earthquakes and explosions – is negative. The day-to-day reality, however, is much more interesting.

As the Internet of Things becomes more capable, moving from an initial ad hoc bundle of chaos to an optimized set of interconnected assets, we will need to ensure it performs and is reliable. But this means the tools measuring the performance and reliability of the IoT will also need to mature as the need for timely, understandable, quality, business-critical information becomes paramount. Sensors that are malfunctioning, devices that are offline, data that’s little more than noise can all scuttle the best IoT monitoring strategies. Let's fix them. Let's make sure the "Things" in IoT are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was. You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. My wellness band actually woke me up about 15 minutes before my alarm because it had used data about my sleep patterns to determine that I was ready to get up (it automatically turns off my alarm so that it doesn’t bother my wife). I slept well last night. I get a gold star. Yippee…
I recently had an opportunity to participate in the SPS Commerce DevOps day event; with over 100 engineers gathered to discuss topics ranging from remote team management, automation frameworks, managing docker deployments, and of course how dynamic monitoring can enable a more agile culture, it was one of the most interesting and collaborative days I’ve had the opportunity to be apart of. Bridget Kromhout – a rock star Cloud Foundry Engineer at Pivotal (@bridgetkromhout) – kicked off the day by discussing strategies for building globally distributed teams and embracing collaboration across time zones. Bridget is a great speaker, and the session was packed full of compelling anecdotes, but there were two specific takeaways that resonated with me, as they align closely to how I think about APM.
Fresh off the Vegas-style hypefest that is the Consumer Electronics Show, fitness wearables darling Fitbit is already in hot water. Numerous customers, furious at the inaccuracies of Fitbit’s devices, filed a national class-action lawsuit on January 5. “Plaintiffs and many consumers like them have experienced—and testing confirms—that the [Fitbit] PurePulse Trackers consistently mis-record heart rates by a very significant margin, particularly during exercise,” the lawsuit alleges. “Far from ‘counting every beat,’ the PurePulse Trackers do not and cannot consistently and accurately record wearers’ heart rates during the intense physical activity for which Fitbit expressly markets them.”
The cloud has evolved quickly. Businesses have weighed the perks of private, public, and even hybrid clouds. If those options weren’t enough, here comes the open hybrid cloud. An open hybrid cloud leverages the benefits of accessing data and processes across private and public implementations, while facilitating open source development. It is a model that has expanded within the military. In the search for costs savings, the Department of Defense has experimented with many new cloud models.
When it comes to IoT in the enterprise, namely the commercial building and hospitality markets, a benefit not getting the attention it deserves is energy efficiency, and IoT’s direct impact on a cleaner, greener environment when installed in smart buildings. Until now clean technology was offered piecemeal and led with point solutions that require significant systems integration to orchestrate and deploy. There didn't exist a 'top down' approach that can manage and monitor the way a Smart Building actually breathes - immediately flagging overheating in a closet or over cooling in unoccupied hotel rooms.

Participants received the download information, scripts, and complete end-to-end walkthrough of the analysis from start to finish, and were also given the practical knowledge to take their analysis to the next level and to have a conversation with their lines of business and management to show how easy it can be to add a social analytics package to their overall data analytics strategies.
