This week we're attending SYS-CON Event's DevOps Summit in New York City. It's a great conference and energy behind DevOps is enormous. Thousands of attendees from every company you can imagine are focused on automation, the challenges of DevOps, and how to bring greater agility to software delivery. But, even with the energy behind DevOps there's something missing from the movement. For all the talk of deployment automation, continuous integration, and cloud infrastructure I'm still not seeing an adequate roadmap for how DevOps aligns with the larger organization. DevOps is about delivering software faster, but there's more to the story than new tools and techniques for developers and operations.

This week, the team assembled in NYC for @Cloud Expo 2015 and @ThingsExpo 2015. For the past four years, this has been a must-attend event for MetraTech. We were happy to once again join industry visionaries, colleagues, customers and even competitors to share and explore the ways in which the Internet of Things (IoT) will impact our industry. Over the course of the show, we discussed the types of challenges we will collectively need to solve to capitalize on the opportunity IoT presents.
Maintaining network security has never been more challenging than it is right now. Traditional network perimeters are beginning to blur in the face of consumerization, the rise of mobility, migration to the cloud, and the Internet of Things. The pursuit of business agility has driven these trends, and they offer tangible benefits, but in the rush to adopt them, information security has been left behind. According to the Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Global State of Information Security Survey: 2015, the number of detected incidents reached 42.8 million last year. That's an increase of 48% over 2013, and the total financial losses attributed to those security breaches were up 34% on the year before. Ever more stringent regulatory guidelines and compliance standards are also putting businesses at risk of legal liability in the event of a successful cyberattack.
Business leadership is both science and art. The scientific aspects revolve around finance, organization, products and service. Artistic aspects include relationships, market trajectories and business strategies. While many focus on the science through books and training, the art of business is best learned from real practitioners. That is why I jumped at the chance to meet Dimension Data's Steve Nola during the company's analyst event, Perspectives 2015, in Prague, Czech Republic. Steve is the company's ITaaS Group Executive and prior to this, served separate stints as Chief Executive Officer of the Cloud Business Unit and Dimension Data Australia region. The basic integration architecture, as defined by ESBs, hasn’t changed for more than a decade. Most cloud integration providers still rely on an ESB architecture and their proprietary connectors. As a result, enterprise integration projects suffer from constraints of availability and reliability of these connectors that are not re-usable across other integration vendors. However, the rapid adoption of APIs and almost ubiquitous availability of APIs amongst most SaaS and Cloud applications are rapidly redefining traditional integration approaches and their reliance on proprietary connectors. In her session at 16th Cloud Expo, Laura Heritage, Director of API Strategy at Akana, will discuss how enterprises can adopt an API-based integration and connector-less architecture to achieve lightweight, quick, and configurable drag-and-drop integration that is fit for the new digital enterprise.
In New Zealand, they are taking a “Moneyball” approach to optimizing social worker spending and focus attention can be most effective. A recent article in BusinessWeek “A Moneyball Approach To Helping Troubled Kids” (May 11, 2015) highlights the role that “scores” can play in identifying and prioritizing problem areas, and deciding what corrective actions to take. Using data from welfare, education, employment, and the housing agencies and the courts, the government identified the most expensive welfare beneficiaries – kids who have at least one close adult relative who’s previously been reported to child safety authorities, been to prison, and spent substantial time on welfare. “There are million-dollar [cost] kids in those families,” Minister of Finance Bill English says. “By the time they are 10, their likelihood of incarceration is 70 percent. You’ve got to do something about that.”
Platform as a Service vendors in public cloud are mostly focused on the platform for Java, PHP, Python, Ruby and other programming languages. But what about C/C++ and COBOL apps, which continue to be mission-critical for enterprises? Do you bring such apps to the cloud? If so, what are the options for transitioning to cloud? Or would you rather leave such apps on-premises, possibly in a private cloud, and only worry about integrating these applications with new applications in the cloud?

There’s no point in Googling the term ‘digital blurring’ because it doesn’t really exist. Except that it does… and we all have a pretty good idea of what it means. The bad news is that there are several kinds of digital blurring going on. The good news is that they are all digital and so they are all characteristically of the same genus and species. We see digital blurring currently distorting the boundaries between IT and the business function. As a result we find that firms are staring to create new ‘Chief Digital Officer’ roles in an attempt to provide a bridging point across the business to connect its otherwise potentially fragmenting parts.

The enterprise market will drive IoT device adoption over the next five years.
