The biggest, and possibly the most hated buzzwords to happen to IT in the last 10 years have been… Cloud, Internet of Things, and drumroll… Big Data (featuring its ugly stepchild the Data Lake). And over the past 10+ years, I’ve had the job of explaining these “things” to people (many of whom are not technical). Nobody likes new buzzwords – at least not the kind of people I like. But if they become understood, and validated, people start to understand why they’re legitimately needed. And this is the year, 2015, when Data Lake earns its keep.

It will be interesting (perhaps quite easy) to develop a tamper-proof gun mounted camera that can automatically log all activities and stream load data to a cloud service. Such a device should be a standard official issue. In fact as gun-related violence has been on the radar, it should be mandatory for all registered guns.
Disruption in the communications ecosystem is creating a market opportunity for Cloud Real-Time Communications (RTC) platforms. We expect this market to represent a $4.5 billion opportunity by 2018. Cloud RTC Platforms are cloud services that enable mobile and web developers to integrate communications into their applications with just a few lines of code. Via REST APIs and SDKs Cloud RTC Platforms enable developers to easily integrate voice, messaging and video calling into mobile and web applications supporting more contextual conversations. These tools have the potential to change in how we interact with each other in the future.
Just to be clear, no enterprise, no matter how large, has all the capabilities in house to bring a complex IoT product or service to market without some outside help along the way. Take Nexia, an IoT service for running your connected home. Creating this offering required a number of specialized disciplines in areas such as device design, electronics, digital systems, application integration and ergonomics, to name just a few.
The concept of a ‘data lake’ was coined by James Dixon of Pentaho Corp. and this is what he said – If you think of a datamart as a store of bottled water – cleansed and packaged and structured for easy consumption – the data lake is a large body of water in a more natural state. The contents of the data lake stream in from a source to fill the lake, and various users of the lake can come to examine, dive in, or take samples. Think of a data lake as an unstructured data warehouse, a place where you pull in all of your different sources into one large “pool” of data. In contrast to a data mart, a data lake won’t “wash” the data or try to structure it or limit the use cases. Sure, you should have some use cases in mind, but the architecture of a data lake is simple: a Hadoop File System (HDFS) with lots of directories and files on it.
In recent years, the US government has become a leading advocate for continuous monitoring of security threats and vulnerabilities. But how effectively are departments and agencies in implementing these programs? And how do we measure success? Moving Towards Continuous Monitoring Though it’s become a popular concept, continuous monitoring wasn’t always in vogue. When the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) was enacted in 2002, the law required agencies to document security practices, including taking inventory of information systems and writing security plans. External firms would audit the plans and grade departments and agencies based on their efforts.

In my younger days (we won’t discuss how long ago that was) I decided to take up sailing. I had always been fascinated watching sailboats, gliding smoothly along the water, with nothing but wind as their engine. My first lesson on the water was an exhilarating and eye opening experience. The instructor took me out on a 17-foot day sailer. It was a brisk New England April afternoon, what seemed like a perfect day to be sailing. The instructor explained the different techniques and maneuvers required to traverse the lake, which I executed, though somewhat nervously. We were moving at what felt like breakneck speeds, constantly shifting and changing the position of the boat, adjusting the sail to the changing wind directions, while still heading in the desired direction. Suddenly, a gust of wind came from a completely unexpected direction. Before I fully realized what had happened, I found myself treading water, looking back at the day sailer, which was completely turtled (a term I learned that day) upside down in the water. My instructor, amazingly, was standing on top of the upside down boat, completely dry.
It's not just apps that are decomposing, it's the network, too. The network is bifurcating. On the one side is rock solid reliability founded on the premise of permanence and infrequent change. On the other is flexibility borne of transience, immutability and rapid change. There are, by virtue of this change in application architecture from the monolithic to the microservice model, changes necessary in the network. Specifically to the means by which the network delivers the application services upon which apps rely to be themselves delivered in a way that meets the performance, security and availability expectations of business and consumers alike.
One of the unintended consequences of cloud is the operational inconsistency it introduces. That inconsistency is introduced because cloud commoditizes the infrastructure we're used to having control over and visibility into. everything from the core network to the application services upon which business and operations relies to ensure performance, availability and security are often times obscured behind simplified services whose policies and configurations cannot be reconciled with those we maintain on-premise.
