Even though it’s now Microservices Journal, long-time fans of SOA World Magazine can take comfort in the fact that the URL – soa.sys-con.com – remains unchanged. And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are talking about microservices instead, let’s switch out the terminology.
Although Windows 10 is not RTM yet, the following are the rumored version. However Microsoft is extending the reach by adding Windows 10 IoT to the above list. It is Windows 10 for embedded and supports universal apps and drives and can work for the whole spectrum of devices from simple devices to complicated industrial devices. With this additional version the Windows 10 is surely driving towards the OnePlatform concept.
GENBAND has announced that SageNet is leveraging the Nuvia platform to deliver Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) to its large base of retail and enterprise customers. Nuvia’s cloud-based solution provides SageNet’s customers with a full suite of business communications and collaboration tools. Two large national SageNet retail customers have recently signed up to deploy the Nuvia platform and the company will continue to sell the service to new and existing customers. Nuvia’s capabilities include HD voice, video, multimedia messaging, mobility, conferencing, Web collaboration, desktop unified communications (UC) clients and fixed-mobile convergence.
I first met Alan in New York City at the 2014 CloudExpo just after starting my new role at VictorOps. Known as “Shimmy” to most in the DevOps community, Alan launched DevOps.com as a resource for DevOps education and community building. Shimmy and I reconnected again in Houston where I gave a talk on ChatOps at Camp DevOps. A self-described serial entrepreneur and business executive, Alan has founded or helped launch numerous startups. With over 25+ years in the IT business world, Alan also writes and speaks on many IT subjects. He most recently launched DevOps.com as well as DevOps Connect – which started in 2011 as “Camp DevOps”, a grassroots conference designed to bring together practitioners of DevOps to educate themselves on process and tools to make their jobs easier – and has now evolved into a much larger project of DevOps Connect.

This is the first independent services company to create a dedicated practice to help organizations looking to transition to the DevOps model. The concept of DevOps is to blend information technology (IT) software development with operations to optimize the computing infrastructure according to the specific needs of the organization. According to a recent press release (www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2999017) from Gartner, "By 2016, DevOps will evolve from a niche strategy employed by large cloud providers to a mainstream strategy employed by 25 percent of Global 2000 organizations."
For better or worse, DevOps has gone mainstream. All doubt was removed when IBM and HP threw up their respective DevOps microsites. Where are we on the hype cycle? It's hard to say for sure but there's a feeling we're heading for the "Peak of Inflated Expectations." What does this mean for the enterprise? Should they avoid DevOps? Definitely not. Should they be cautious though? Absolutely. The truth is that DevOps and the enterprise are at best strange bedfellows. The movement has its roots in the tech community's elite. Open source projects and methodologies driven by the alumni of companies like Netflix, Google and Amazon. This is a great thing for the evolution of DevOps. It can be alienating for Enterprise IT though. Learning about Netflix and their simian armies, or Facebook and their mind-melting scale is fascinating. Can you take it back to the office on Monday morning though?

I met with Anita earlier this week and asked her a few questions about the #LikeAGirl movement, working in the male-dominated tech industry, and whether or not the cliche of technicians being nerds applies to her personally. That means I’m responsible for keeping our infrastructure up and running. So, I’m the one who pushes the “Rollout” button when we release new versions. I’m also a regular at executive staff meetings.
VoxImplant has announced full WebRTC support in the newest versions of its Android SDK and iOS SDK. The updated SDKs, which enable audio and video calls on mobile devices, are now compatible with the WebRTC standard to allow any mobile app to communicate with WebRTC-enabled browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and, when available, Microsoft Spartan. The WebRTC-updated SDKs represent VoxImplant's continued leadership in simplifying the development of real-time communications (RTC) services for app developers. VoxImplant (built by Zingaya, the real-time communication service provider for business) allows developers to easily embed RTC functionalities into both web and mobile apps; mobile users can then make and receive voice and video calls via data or Wi-Fi connections.
Can call centers hang up the phones for good? Intuitive Solutions did. WebRTC enabled this contact center provider to eliminate antiquated telephony and desktop phone infrastructure with a pure web-based solution, allowing them to expand beyond brick-and-mortar confines to a home-based agent model. It also ensured scalability and better service for customers, including MUY! Companies, one of the country's largest franchise restaurant companies with 232 Pizza Hut locations. This is one example of WebRTC adoption today, but the potential is limitless when powered by IoT.
When it comes to building applications, one database definitely does not fit all. Traditional SQL databases are great for storing highly structured, normalized data and performing analytics and reporting. NoSQL has attracted developers with its awesome flexibility, and JSON-centric document stores like Cloudant make web developers incredibly productive by offering a JavaScript environment from end-to-end. Recent Big Data challenges have driven the need for a distributed approach to analytics employing MapReduce techniques embodied in software like Hadoop and Spark. The many analysts who participated as part of the GigaOm cadre of contributors are in a strange limbo. Many have not been paid for recent work with GigaOm, meaning they too are creditors, just not ones with very much legal standing. So far there has been no insights reported on the 100's (possibly 1000's) of companies with access to the special research only sections of GigaOm behind their paywall. Many of these firms will have paid in advance for their access. They are now, in at least spirit, creditors who are owed something.
