How to Win Over DevOps Holdouts | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #ContinuousDelivery

It’s “time to move on from DevOps and continuous delivery.” This was the provocative title of a recent article in ZDNet, in which Kelsey Hightower, staff developer advocate at Google Cloud Platform, suggested that “software shops should have put these concepts into action years ago.” Reading articles like this or listening to talks at most DevOps conferences might make you think that we’re entering a post-DevOps world. But vast numbers of organizations still struggle to start and drive transformational changes. In fact, it’s incredibly common for software development projects to be late, to be built with poor quality, and to fail to meet the needs of users. Despite all the evidence that we should be doing DevOps, we can’t.

[slides] Wild West of Gemini Test Automation | @CloudExpo #DevOps #AI #ML #DX

Gemini is Yahoo’s native and search advertising platform. To ensure the quality of a complex distributed system that spans multiple products and components and across various desktop websites and mobile app and web experiences – both Yahoo owned and operated and third-party syndication (supply), with complex interaction with more than a billion users and numerous advertisers globally (demand) – it becomes imperative to automate a set of end-to-end tests 24x7 to detect bugs and regression. In their session at 21st Cloud Expo, Jenny Hung, E2E Engineer Manager at Yahoo Gemini, Haoran Zhao, Software Engineer at Oath Gemini, and Lin Zhang, Software Engineer at Oath (Yahoo), described the technical challenges and the principles we followed to build a reliable and scalable test automation infrastructure across desktops, mobile apps, and mobile web platforms on the cloud. They also shared some best practices for advanced automated testing of web and mobile applications.

How Access Management Protects Today’s No-Perimeter Network | #SDN #Cloud #Security

The rule of thumb for network security today is that there is no perimeter anymore. An outsider can easily become an insider once perimeter security is breached. Every day, attackers find new ways to breach enterprise perimeter security through ransomware, malware or phishing through social engineering. This is not to suggest that all is lost. Rather, organizations can defeat cybercriminals, in part, by better managing what has already been put in place. As an example of what can go wrong if that doesn’t happen, consider the following story.

What to Automate and What Not to Automate | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Automation

The benefits of automation are well documented; it increases productivity, cuts cost and minimizes errors. It eliminates repetitive manual tasks, freeing us up to be more innovative. By that logic, surely, we should automate everything possible, right? So, is attempting to automate everything a sensible - even feasible - goal? In a word: no. Consider this your short guide as to what to automate and what not to automate.

[slides] Enterprise-Wide Agile Transformation | @CloudExpo #DX #Agile #DigitalTransformation

Agile has finally jumped the technology shark, expanding outside the software world. Enterprises are now increasingly adopting Agile practices across their organizations in order to successfully navigate the disruptive waters that threaten to drown them. In our quest for establishing change as a core competency in our organizations, this business-centric notion of Agile is an essential component of Agile Digital Transformation. In the years since the publication of the Agile Manifesto, the connection between building better software and business agility has been a tenuous one at best. But now that Agile is maturing and Digital Transformation is driving change across enterprises large and small, companies are realizing that their best bet for achieving business agility is to take the best of Agile and apply it across the entire organization.

How to Manage, Deliver and Govern Hybrid Cloud Services | @CloudExpo #SaaS #ITaaS #Cloud

Many enterprise and government IT organizations are realizing the benefits of cloud computing by extending IT delivery and management processes across private and public cloud services. But they are often challenged with balancing the need for centralized cloud governance without stifling user-driven innovation. This strategy requires an approach that fundamentally reshapes how IT is delivered today, shifting the focus from infrastructure to services aggregation, and mixing and matching the best services for meeting organizations’ current and future needs.

How Much Does a Mobile App Cost? | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Mobility

How much does it cost to make an app is almost as popular a question as it is confusing. No one tries to learn the exact costs of, say, making a movie: people realize that there’s an overwhelming amount of variables involved on which they depend. But almost every day a new inquiry is posted on a tech forum, Quora, or Reddit as to how much it’d take to build a mobile business app.

Why Self-Organization Demands a New Reality | @ExpoDX #DX #ML #Agile

"This all sounds great. But it's just not realistic." This is what a group of five senior IT executives told me during a workshop I held not long ago. We were working through an exercise on the organizational characteristics necessary to successfully execute a digital transformation, and the group was doing their ‘readout.' The executives loved everything we discussed and agreed that if such an environment existed, it would make transformation much easier. They just didn't believe it was realistic.

MongoDB Basics: Configuring Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud #OpenSource

MongoDB, an open-source document store and most popular NoSQL database on the market today, offers a variety of advanced features to administer security over your MongoDB deployments. In this tutorial post, we’re going to show you how to set up role-based access control (RBAC) to manage user access across your MongoDB systems for reIndex, mongodump and mongorestore. If you're the administrator of your MongoDB databases, you've likely received requests to provide an individual user with the capabilities to perform a certain action(s). MongoDB's security features are fairly mature now, and allow you to create and assign very granular role-based access control.

[slides] A Cloud-based HPC Visualization Cluster | @CloudExpo @PenguinHPC #Cloud #Containers

Data scientists must access high-performance computing resources across a wide-area network. To achieve cloud-based HPC visualization, researchers must transfer datasets and visualization results efficiently. HPC clusters now compute GPU-accelerated visualization in the cloud cluster. To efficiently display results remotely, a high-performance, low-latency protocol transfers the display from the cluster to a remote desktop. Further, tools to easily mount remote datasets and efficiently transfer that data into the HPC cluster are described, including performance characterization results.

Industry Verticals Tackle Unstructured Data | @CloudExpo #Cloud #BigData #Storage

Organizations around the world are struggling to cope with the current data explosion. A vital characteristic of this data is that it is unstructured and represents things like email, images, and videos. Storage of this form of data is typically in an object format which differs significantly from the database norm. Databases housed data grows very slowly because most of it is structured. Object storage formats are now being used to optimize access to large amounts of non-transactional files across a growing number of vertical markets.

Containers, or Container Management? | @DevOpsSummit @DMacVittie #DevOps #Docker #Kubernetes

We just came off of a review of a product that handles both containers and virtual machines in the same interface. Under the covers, implementation of containers defaults to LXC, though recently Docker support was added. When reading online, or searching for information, increasingly we see “Container Management” products listed as competitors to Docker, when in reality things like Rocket, LXC/LXD, and Virtualization are Dockers competitors. After doing some looking around, we have decided that this shift in how Docker is perceived in the market is due largely to the fact that it is easy to set up and begin using. Inevitably, if the Docker install is large enough, something like Docker Enterprise Edition, Kubernetes, Apache Mesos/DCOS will be required to container management, but for the entry level, “container management” has less stringent requirements.
