I am up late January 5th and have been awaiting the first news stories from the big Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES) about the new Google phone, the Nexus One. I just Googled up the first piece (from 33 minutes ago) from, of all sources, the Montreal Gazette. In the final few sentences they capture the essence of the real disruptive innovation threat this bold Google Phone poses to business as usual for US Carriers and, I would imagine, people are applauding!

I have been totally excited since the booking of the Moscone West by Apple for January 27 and believe, like most of the industry followers, that Apple will be announcing their tablet/slate device. Whilst digging around I came across this great video that shows how fantastic such a device could be used in the areas of education and show some innovations that such a device could bring to students in the new decade. Could we now be on the edge of a totally e-classroom, that not only allows the student to carry e-books etc (such as in the video) but allows electronic submission of work & central management of timetables & attendance etc?

DeviceVM, a privately held software company offering Splashtop, announced on Saturday that it has filed a claim for patent infringement against Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq:PTEC) in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The patent claim is based on DeviceVM’s determination that Phoenix’s HyperSpace product infringes a patent owned by DeviceVM for a “Mechanism for Intuitively Invoking One or More Auxiliary Programs During a Computer Booting Process.” DeviceVM seeks, among other relief, damages for Phoenix’s infringement and an injunction barring Phoenix from making, using, offering to sell, licensing, and/or selling HyperSpace products.

PlayHaven, an online universe of fan communities for iPhone games, and Mobclix, the industry's largest targeted mobile ad exchange, released data today predicting that iPhone game usage is likely to set records in the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, soaring to levels 28 times greater than the same weekly period last year. "The week between Christmas and New Years has become the great 'Game Rush' for iPhone games - essentially what Black Friday is to brick and mortar retailers," said Raymond Lau, co-founder and CEO of PlayHaven. "This soaring increase in iPhone game downloads is even more spectacular when you consider the slow holiday sales this year for console game titles."

There is this thing about the Google Phone which I really can not grasp. Read e.g. this article. So HTC is obviously making an unlocked phone called the Nexus One. And just because it is unlocked it is said to be a Google Phone. What most people in US seems to have missed is that there is a big market for phones _not_ sold through operators. They are unlocked, open and available through retail-chains. China is a huge market for those kind of phones where the operators channels some 10% only of the total volumes (150-200M phones).

Recently I traveled to California for an iPhone Conference and heard of something that I had never come across - 3G Congestion. I was told that this is usually common place in shopping malls on a Saturday, where folks are emailing, texting and browsing etc from their 3G enabled handsets/Smartphones.
PC World's Ian Paul recent article asked, "2010: The Year of the Tablet Computer ?" That is a good question Ian. RobiNZ CAD Blog asked in 2007 if 2008 was the year of the Tablet as well. The theoretical applications of technologies as opposed to their practical adoption is something we all have witnessed. Given the increasing level of news and rumors around tablets, with dozens of new tablet devices planning to launch, one would wonder if the movement to wide spread adoption of tablets is here and why?
The rumor mill says that Apple could be out with that tablet it’s supposed to have up its sleeve in March or April. According to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner, it’s supposed to have a 10.1-inch iPhone-style multi-touch screen and a $1,000 price tag. It would compete with Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader. Reiner says Apple’s been pitching book publishers on a non-executive deal giving them 70% of the money, more lucrative for them than Amazon, which is thought to demand 50% of the take. Reiner thinks Apple means to make a million of the widgets a month to start.
Amazon Web Services announced GoodData as the winner of the third annual AWS Start-Up Challenge.
