Temple Run hits Android

Temple Run, Imangi Studios' running game that has been downloaded more than 45 million times on iOS, is now available for Android. The Washington-based studio confirms in a press release that Temple Run is available now as a free download from Google Play, the new name for Google's download store following a thorough rebranding of its online services including Android Market.

Unreal Engine to power US government training

Epic Games and Virtual Heroes have announced a licensing agreement that will enable the US government and its allies to use Epic's Unreal Engine. Announced in a press release, the deal will see Virtual Heroes supply Unreal technology to US government departments, agencies and units, as well as those of its allies, through a new platform, Unreal Government Network (UGN).

Xbox 360 users now spend more time consuming movies, TV shows and music online than they do playing games, according to Microsoft.

Xbox marketing boss Yusuf Mehdi told the LA Times that Xbox 360 owners spend an average of 84 hours a month using Xbox Live services, up 30 per cent from a year ago, and that just over half of that time is spent on videos and music.

"What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," he said.

Australia begins R18+ introduction in Canberra

The rating has been a long time coming, and follows the submission of the R18+ bill to parlianment in February this year. The bill will see an end to games such as Syndicate, Left 4 Dead 2 and Mortal Kombat being refused classification in the country, while many games currently under Australia's previous highest rating, MA15+, will be reclassified.

The association's general secretary Mary Bousted has said that students are being allowed to stay up till early morning, playing games inappropriate to their age, and are becoming desensitised to aggression and bloodshed. She also raised a more general concern that the time children could spend interacting with friends or playing outdoors was being eaten into by an over-exposure to screen-based entertainment, harming their long-term development and education.

Reports suggest that the forthcoming Epic Mickey game for 3DS, Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, will be a sequel to the Megadrive Sega classic, Castle Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.

According to a preview in Nintendo Power the game, developed by DreamRift, is a side-scrolling platformer that uses the stylus to paint objects into existence. Each level is based on a Disney film, including Sleeping Beauty and Tangled.

CD Projekt's DRM-free download service signs a number of indie developers as partners.

Digital distribution service Good Old Games (GOG) will begin offering newer titles alongside its over 400 classic PC titles from today, and has signed a number of indie developers as partners.

Game Group closes 277 stores, cutting 2,100 jobs

Administrators say cuts will place the company in a stronger position while it seeks a buyer.

Administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers has confirmed the closure of 100s of Game Group's underperforming stores in a move that will see 1,000s of jobs lost.

277 of the 609 Game and Gamestation stores in the UK and Ireland have been shut, and PwC says 2,104 employees will be made redundant this week.

Confirmed earlier this month for Vita, the RPG will include cross-platform play between Sony's handheld and the PC version, as well microtransactions.
