Fresnadillo is the second director to leave the project following original director Gore Verbinski's exit. Speaking to The Playlist, Verbinski explained:
"To be honest, by now, I'm completely out of that, and developing other stuff. Right now it's on hold. The studio and [Irrational], they have to reach some kind of agreement about the budget and the rating."
For videogame series with deep fictions - from Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect to Halo and WOW – supplementary novels provide alluring opportunities for world-building and help to keep fans hooked between iterations. Whether penned by pulp-fiction journeymen or barely disguised literary authors (such as Brian Evenson, who wrote Dead Space: Martyr as BK Evenson), novelisation has historically been the exclusive privilege of big-budget blockbusters.

If we consider David Jaffe the Roger Corman of videogames – a keen, eclectic stylist with a penchant for the absurd; equally capable of thumping thrills and schlocky silliness (and often delivering both at once) – then Twisted Metal is his Death Race 2000. This latest incarnation of the divisive vehicular shooter treads the line between remake and full-blown reboot.

The latest of FromSoftware’s run-and-gun mecha romps is as good a place for newcomers to start as the revered Armored Cores 2 and 3, or the accessible Armored Core: For Answer. The customisation is as deep and straightforward as the latter, while a cleaner HUD condenses all crucial data (ammo, energy, health) into the series’ traditionally oversized crosshair, removing a further layer of intimidation from AC’s barrier to entry.
