Microsoft is investigating a bug that is wiping Xbox Live users' Gamerscores when they unlock an achievement. Forums - including Microsoft's own - and the Xbox Support Twitter account are currently awash with complaints from users who have unlocked a new achievement to find their Gamerscore being reset to zero.

UPDATE: Microsoft says on the official Xbox site that the issue was a temporary one which has since been resolved. Those who are yet to see their Gamerscore restored are advised to log out and back in.

UPDATE: Microsoft confirms Harrison has been appointed - but not as Molyneux's replacement.

UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed Harrison's appointment - but has asked us to make clear that, contrary to reports, he is not taking on Peter Molyneux's recently vacated role at the head of Microsoft Game Studios in Europe.

Instead, Harrison will serve as corporate vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business leadership team, reporting to Don Mattrick with a specific brief to grow the division's European business.

GDC 2012: Attendance up 17 per cent

Some 22,500 videogame industry professionals attended last week's Game Developers Conference, organisers have confirmed. The figure represents year-on-year growth of 17 per cent for the event, and sets a new attendance record. Organisers have confirmed that the event will return next year, to the same venue - San Francisco's Moscone Center - from March 25 to 29.

More stock trouble for Game Group

Floundering UK retailer Game Group has received more bad news this morning with the confirmation that Tecmo Koei will not be supplying it with copies of two upcoming releases. In a brief statement on its website, the publisher confirms that neither Ninja Gaiden 3, released on March 23, nor Warriors Orochi 3, due a fortnight later, will be available from Game, Gamestation or their respective websites.

Rein confident in Wii U

Mark Rein, vice president of Unreal Engine creator Epic Games, says he will be "shocked" if Nintendo's new console, Wii U, doesn't do well. Speaking to Eurogamer at GDC last week, Rein said Wii U - which was unveiled at E3 last year and will be shown off at this year's conference ahead of a release later in 2012 - was much changed from what was unveiled last year.

Jaffe in no rush for next gen

David Jaffe, the outspoken creator of God Of War and Twisted Metal, is in no rush for the next generation of consoles, telling us he "couldn't care less" about the prospect of new hardware.

Report: vultures circle Game assets

Two firms have today been linked with buyouts of the assets of beleaguered UK retailer Game Group. The Financial Times reports that Hilco, a retail restructuring group that has previously dealt with the likes of HMV Canada, Woolworths, Littlewoods and Borders, is reportedly looking at Game's international assets, including its stores in Spain, Portugal and Australia.

PC strategy series Total War is headed to iOS and Android, publisher Sega has confirmed. Developer The Creative Assembly is hard at work on Total War Battles: Shogun ahead of its release for iPhone, iPad and Android next month. Both studio and publisher insist that this is no shoehorned PC port, but has been designed specifically for mobiles with multi-touch controls.

Game Group secures Twisted Metal stock

Embattled UK retailer Game Group will be stocking PS3 vehicular shooter Twisted Metal when it is released on Friday. Publisher Sony confirmed the news to Eurogamer in a brief statement. It's rare good news for Game, which following the loss of its credit insurance last month has been without stock of new titles from Nintendo, Capcom, Ubisoft and EA.

No new Mikami game this year

Shinji Mikami's Tango Gameworks studio's current project will not see release until next year at the earliest. Speaking in an interview with 4Gamer, translated by Andriasang, Toru Takahashi - general manager of ZeniMax's Asia division, which acquired Tango in 2010 - said fans should not expect to see Mikami's game until 2013 or beyond.

Settlement forbids more Mojang Scrolls games

Mojang is forbidden from making any further games using the Scrolls name under the terms of the legal settlement reached with Bethesda last week. Gamasutra reports that, while the settlement left the Minecraft studio free to release Scrolls, announced at GDC last year, with no change to its name, the developer relinquished all rights to the trademark to Bethesda parent company Zenimax Media.

SCE president promises improved Vita broadcasts

Hiroshi Kawano, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, has promised that the company's next PS Vita web broadcast will be much improved. In a blog post translated by Andriasang, Kawano recognises that last week's "Welcome! PS Vita Game Heaven" broadcast did not meet user expectations, and says he and his staff are using this "harsh criticism" as a lesson for its future work.

EA shores up FIFA Ultimate Team security

Electronic Arts has moved to improve security on its FIFA Ultimate Team online game, which has been linked to phishing scams and the hacking of Xbox Live accounts. EA has staunchly denied that lax Ultimate Team security is behind the spate of Xbox Live account thefts; both it, and Microsoft, attribute it to players falling victim of phishing scams, which this update seeks to address.
