Valve has said that reports it is to announce its entry into the console hardware market this year are wide of the mark, saying it is "a long way from shipping any sort of hardware." Speaking to Kotaku, marketing director Doug Lombardi said that recent reports claiming Valve would unveil hardware which would place Steam "at the centre of an open gaming universe", similar to Google's Android, at GDC or E3 this year were incorrect - but left the door open for the company to do so in future.

Soundcloud user Lazyitis has posted a Super Mario Bros-style chiptune version of The Smiths' classic This Charming Man, making use of sound effects from the game.

The track has a split personality, and we're not sure which is the bigger achievement: retaining Mario's relentlessly breezy spirit in a Smiths cover, or keeping hold of the band's cynical melancholy through a chiptune filter.

GDC 2012: David Cage shows new tech demo

Fully motion-captured showreel features weepy elfin android lady.

A pretty android lady with an existential crisis was the subject of Quantic Dream’s latest tech showcase, demonstrated to a packed hall at GDC. Like The Casting, Quantic Dream’s 2006 demo reel, it wasn’t indicative of the Heavy Rain developer’s current project; indeed, it’s a year old. The flashy new engine that supports it has moved from version one to three in that time - although the video on show today hardly looks worse for it, illustrating just how much juice there is to be squeezed from PlayStation 3.
