Opinion: Why Dead Rising stands out from the horde

Randy Smith considers the design principles which make Capcom's open-world zombie brawler so engaging.

The first thing you learn is that you should keep moving. You can’t kill them all, and bullying hordes of weaker, dumber enemies is a tempting indulgence that only slows you down. Next you learn to avoid becoming surrounded by upright, alert ones, lest they claw you to the floor in a vicious pigpile. These observations quickly lead to the most recurring conundrum: what to do about the milling crowd blocking your way? Personally, I try to end-run them, giving myself a mobility advantage by smashing through store windows or climbing on to separators.

Grand Theft Auto V revealed

GTA returns to San Andreas.

Rockstar has released the debut trailer for GTA V - and the series is to return to San Andreas.

The trailer shows a variety of sun-drenched, mock-Californian locations, both rural and urban. The anonymous voiceover suggests that, while Rockstar is to once again repeat the story of GTA IV with a reformed criminal seeking redemption in the American dream, it realises that sending the player out on violent crime sprees within an hour rather dulls the point.

They are beautiful, arresting, heartfelt and profound statements about what we are and what we can be, and being witness to them has enriched my life. I am immeasurably proud to have chalked the lines on the fields where those beautiful events unfolded, but I didn't make them."
