3DS firmware update confirmed - arriving December in UK

The update will add 3D video recording to its existing 3D photography functionality, allowing up to ten minutes of 3D footage to be stored and even built in tools for making stop-motion animations.

Game graphics have passed the point by which no one cares how good they look, says Clint Hocking.

IGF Pirate Kart collects 300 indie games

A collective of indie developers have bundled over 300 games together into the IGF Pirate Kart. The compilation came about as a way for the developers to share the $95 entrance fee for the Independent Games Festival, removing the barrier to entry for less polished, more experimental game ideas.

The nine recipients of the £25,000 grants are based variously in Dundee, London and Liverpool and were chosen from a total of 47 applicants. They include graduate start-ups, mobile and social gaming studios, and audio engineering and voiceover recording specialists.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon soars to top of Japanese chart

This week's top ten sees six new entries, as Forza 4 debuts at five.

Namco Bandai's Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has debuted at number one in the Japanese chart in its PlayStation 3 incarnation, ousting Konami's Winning Eleven 2012 (PES 2012) from the top spot in the process. The Xbox 360 SKU came in at number six.

Just Dance Wii debuted in second position following an injection of Japanese content, forcing Winning Eleven down to third place.

Sony has confirmed that its 3D Display will be available to buy in the US from November 13.

The 3D display, unveiled at E3 earlier this year, will come bundled with a pair of glasses, an HDMI cable and a copy of MotorStorm: Apocalypse. Anyone who placed a pre-order for the set before October 1 will also bag a free copy of Resistance 3.

UPDATED: Reports are circulating that Nintendo will release a 3DS firmware update in November 4 in Europe which will add 3D video recording to the 3D handheld.

Update: Nintendo has responded to our enquiry by saying that it doesn't comment on rumour or speculation.

Xbox 360 Battlefield 3 "standard def" without optional texture pack

Concession made to Xbox owners without hard drives means that hi-res textures must be installed to see the game at its best.

Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach has revealed that the optional hi-res texture pack including on the second disc of the Xbox 360 version must be installed to see the game at its best.

As a concession to players who own an HDD-less 360, the texture pack had to be an optional extra rather than a requirement, meaning that players who do not, or cannot, install the pack will play what Bach describes as a "standard-def" version of the game.

US console DLC purchases up 11 per cent over last year

51 per cent of HD console owners purchased DLC in the past 12 months

51 per cent of HD console owners in the US and Canada, equating to around 20 million consumers, purchased DLC in the past 12 months according to new research from game industry analyst EEDAR.

The figure is up from 40 per cent in 2010  (14 million consumers) and 34 per cent in 2009 (nine million consumers).

The research, which consists of data collected from 3500 respondents in the regions, also reveals that the DLC which was purchased generated more than $875 million in sales in 2011, and EEDAR estimates that figure will rise to $1 billion in 2012.
