The Fall Of Gods review

Scruffy but satisfying, this action RPG is a brave attempt to stand out from the XBLIG scrum.

A little ambition can go a long way. The bugs and rough edges that chafe throughout The Fall Of Gods' ten-hour runtime are far from unique on a service hardly renowned for prioritising polish, though they're no less disappointing when they arrive. But they're minor flaws in a charmingly retrograde adventure that leans on the likes of Secret Of Mana and early Zelda for inspiration – and doesn't suffer too badly from the comparison.

Google launches multi-platform developer tool PlayN

Google has launched PlayN, a tool that compiles a single body of Java source code into versions which run on HTML5, Java, Android and Flash. Described on Google's developer site as an "open-source cross-platform abstraction layer", PlayN uses the existing GWT compiler (Google Web Toolkit) to eliminate any platform-specific calls from your code and replaces them with "tiny, targeted entry point classes that hook into each platform-specific implementation."

Metzen humbly conceded that Blizzard "isn't necessarily known as the best story shop in the business," but that: "To us [writing] is not about the best [story] hooks in the world, or the most clever hooks. It's not about being the most unique in the world, or the best-written dialog in the world. To us it's about heart, it's about the engagement."
