Rage review

Id walks the line between sticking to what it's best at and being stuck in its ways.

The irony of Bethesda’s acquisition of id is that it has made Rage and Fallout cousins when, in all honesty, it’s hard to imagine them getting along.

BioWare, developer of the Mass Effect trilogy and the upcoming Star Wars MMOG The Old Republic, has insisted that the suggestion that its day-to-day operations are controlled by EA are "not remotely true." Speaking to Eurogamer, co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk said: "One thing we see is when fans don't like something we do, they put in the comments: 'Oh those EA guys, they're making BioWare do...' and I always chuckle because we are EA, we're BioWare - we're both, and we still have huge autonomy in terms of what we do.

Dark Souls review

From Software's masterful open-world RPG stretches the limits of both risk and reward.

Descending a granite staircase early in Dark Souls, you find a Black Knight obstructing the corridor below. He stands with his back turned, oblivious to your approach. A white loot orb glows cheekily at the far end of the passage. Lesser games might telegraph this enemy’s difficulty by showing it rear its head back and screech, flecking the camera lens with spittle. Such condescension would be superfluous in From Software’s action-RPG template.

DICE threatens bans to players on modded Battlefield 3 servers

DICE, Swedish developer of Battlefield 3, has told PC gamers they face Origin account bans should they play the game on unofficial servers - resulting in any other EA games linked to their profile being rendered unplayable. Battlefield 3's server files were leaked last week, allowing users to create their own unofficial game servers with different properties to those in the beta. One, for example, increases the maximum player count on Operation Métro, the beta's sole multiplayer map, from 32 to over 100.

Target’s mangled face identified using secret ‘face recognition’ software; body dumped in the ocean. Nothing to see here; move along.

Region Specific: Dublin's developers

World-class middleware and customer service have put Ireland's capital on the map.

Let’s start by dealing with the black and white elephant in the room: yes, Guinness really does taste better in Dublin. Ascertaining whether that’s just the placebo effect talking or a genuine phenomenon would require the supping of many more pints than we managed during our brief visit to the city, but one difference is more easily quantifiable: you’ll pay a lot more for a pint of the black stuff in Dublin than you would in, say, London, despite the brewery being in its centre.

Plus, finding the soul in free-to-play, and the big list of documentaries about videogames.

"We’ve got the fields of Hyrule and the keeps of Britannia and the caves of Metroid, all kinds of exciting attractions. I don’t think it’s just nostalgia, these experiences really shaped me, made me into the game developer I am today. They represent my frame of reference for understanding the world, and particularly one really fundamental idea: when I want to play something awesome, I pay for it, and then I own it."
