EA: Cross-platform publishing is gaming’s “greatest innovation”

CEO John Riccitiello says there’s still plenty of room for innovation on existing hardware platforms.

The head of Electronic Arts has dismissed the notion that publishers are currently in need of new hardware to drive innovation.

In fact, EA CEO John Riccitiello told IndustryGamers that gaming’s greatest innovation “is occurring right now”.

The exec said: "... There's never enough innovation and we should always be setting the bar higher. What I don't agree with is the implication that we're waiting for the hardware guys to transition to help us realise the innovation.

Wii U's online network "taking advantage of" voice chat, social networking

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata tells investors the company is modernising its approach to online networks with Wii U: "... What I have come to feel lately is that the idea of saying, 'we are going to create this style of online structure and that we would like you, the developers, to fit into the online structure that we are creating' is perhaps already out-of-date... I think that once you hear what we'll have to say, you'll feel that Nintendo has a policy of adapting itself to changes in the network environment in a flexible fashion rather than the one of sticking to a rigid mechanism, or perhaps you'll notice that we have found ways to take advantage of these types of features like VoIP and social networking, where our systems have been seen as being weak in the past."

A localised world

How the rise of app stores has made development depend on localisation.

It took seven months for a localised version Final Fantasy VII to hit US shores after its original 1997 Japanese release. It took another two months for it to reach Europe and Australia. It took a full year before Dragon Quest VIII finally came out in the US after its 2004 Japanese release, and another five months before it arrived in the dense cultural and linguistic patchwork of Europe.

Robin Williams in Ocarina Of Time commercial

The man absolutely no one prefers to call Patch Adams is, of course, a logical choice for the US Zelda marketing campaign: he named his daughter after the titular princess, after all. Here he is, promoting the game's imminent release along with said daughter, and a remarkable beard, even by our own high standards of facial topiary.

Researchers predict MMORPG players' behaviour

University paper claims up to 80 per cent accuracy; could be used to develop tailored game content.

Researchers at North Carolina State University claim to have developed a method which accurately predicts player behaviour in MMORPGs. The system revolves around 'cliques', which are groups of achievements commonly collected together.

The cliques can contain upwards of 80 achievements each, and were arrived at after the researchers collected and analysed achievement badge data from 14,000 World Of Warcraft players. By looking at which achievements a player is yet to collect within a given clique, the researchers can glean a good idea what the player will do next.

Report: Wii U can stream to multiple controllers

Second GPU output apparently capable of streaming SD images to up to four screens.

The Wii U is capable of streaming graphics to more than one controller, according to reports, despite Nintendo's claims that only one controller can be used with its new console.

According to sources close to Japanese gaming website Game Watch - translated by Nintendo World Report - the Wii GPU, supplied by AMD, has two output modes, one of which supports the streaming of up to four "SD images".

Were this output mode to be used it could see Wii U support up to four touchscreen controllers, but Game Watch claims it is not currently used due to cost concerns.

Iwata: Wii U won't play DVD or Blu-ray

Nintendo president confirms that new console will follow Wii's lead, and not allow playback of DVD or Blu-ray video. During an investor briefing at E3 last week, he said: "We feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

Wii U: controlling the experience

By concentrating on the experience and not just on the tech specs, Nintendo has created a console that's genuinely unique, says usability expert Graham McAllister.

Wii U’s unveiling at E3 last week may have come as a disappointment for some. It certainly did for the stockholders, as Nintendo stock dropped almost ten per cent following the announcement.

But why the disappointment? Over the past few years in particular, Nintendo has built a reputation for innovation, differentiating itself from its competition by offering gamers an experience that is not available on any other platform. However, Wii U seems to only offer what consumers already have, and it’s from here that the discontentment seems to stem.

Relentless: exclusivity "a blessing and a curse"

Being a semi-internal Sony studio left Buzz developer out of decision-making process, says Andrew Eades.

Brighton-based Relentless Software has spoken of its experiences since its exclusivity deal with Sony expired last year, and admits that operating under Sony's watchful eye was "both a blessing and a curse."

When the deal expired it brought down the curtain on a seven-year relationship that began when Andrew Eades and David Amor, then of Computer Artworks, were working on what would become DJ: Decks & FX for SCEE. When Computer Artworks folded, the pair convinced Sony that they could set up a company of their own and finish the job.

Child Of Eden review

Motion control breathes new life into a niche genre.

Child Of Eden is the product of an auteur at
the height of his powers, with the free rein to realise a supremely ambitious project and the restraint to make it universal rather than self-serving. At its core are the on-rails shooter mechanics of Rez, but the experience is one that escapes further genre categorisation, creating a level of involvement beyond what its 2001 progenitor achieved.

Majesco shares slump despite return to profit

Shares fall 15 per cent in early trading despite revenue almost tripling thanks to Zumba Fitness.

Shares in Majesco Entertainment fell 15 per cent in the early hours of trading yesterday despite the company's return to profit in the three months ending April 30.

The Cooking Mama publisher posted a net profit of $2.1 million during the quarter, having sustained a loss of $1.6 million in the same period last year.

That return was driven by a dramatic increase in sales, with revenue almost tripling year on year to $32.14 million. Over half of that - $17.2 million - came from sales of Wii games, chiefly Zumba Fitness.
