Two million sign up for Call Of Duty: Elite beta

Activision says two million potential testers signed up for July’s Call Of Duty: Elite beta “in less than two weeks”, but that it’s not too late to register your interest if you’d like a free trial of the subscription service ahead of its full launch alongside Modern Warfare 3 in November. “When the studio head at Beachhead said this would be a live beta, he was not kidding — your participation really can make a difference in how Elite evolves,” writes Activision social media boss Dan Amrich. “And don’t be discouraged by the big number, thinking you shouldn’t bother because they already have enough people — two million volunteers among 30 million Call Of Duty players is a small amount. More would be even better.”

Take-Two CEO discusses acquisition rumours

Strauss Zelnick says he’s delighted with Take-Two’s ability to turn a profit in non-Grand Theft Auto years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the CEO’s in a rush to cash in on the LA Noire publisher’s recently elevated stock. "I'm proud of what we've delivered," he says. "I'm proud of the value we've created for shareholders in the past few years. I'm proud the team has had precious few missteps. But, we're there for the shareholders. All public companies are potentially available. Every time something has come up we've considered it. All that said, we enjoy being an independent company."

Duke Nukem Forever review

So, what do 14 years of development do for a game?

There’s never been another game quite like Duke Nukem Forever. That’s not because it’s inventive, technologically dazzling or particularly memorable, but because there literally hasn’t been another major production that’s taken 14 years to complete.

Three years ago Ordoñez was an MBA student whose experience of the race track was limited to Gran Turismo. After setting the fastest time in the GT Academy time trial, he won the 2008 competition, and came second in the real-world GT4 Championship in his debut season.

Kojima: NES Metal Gear was "pitiful"

Hideo Kojima reveals his disdain for the NES port of his 1987 MSX original: "I had absolutely no participation in the development of the NES version. The NES version was a pitiful title developed cheaply and simply by a small team in Tokyo... Even though it was an abomination, it was during the bubble economy and it sold millions overseas. That title has only soiled my reputation."

Analyst slams The Old Republic

Doug Creutz, senior research analyst at financial services firm Cowen And Company, on what he saw of BioWare's Star Wars MMOG at E3: "Despite promises that the title represents a major step forward in MMOG design, what we saw was essentially a World Of Warcraft clone with Star Wars character skins and the BioWare RPG nice/nasty dialogue tree mechanism bolted on."

Those who shudder at the mere mention of Demon's Souls - perhaps the most punishing game of its generation - will be far from thrilled to hear director Hidetaka Miyazaki say: "I have no intention to make [Dark Souls] any easier. In fact, I want it to be more difficult...we are trying to make the most difficult game it is possible to make." This spiritual sequel - which thankfully drops its predecessor's confusing apostrophe - is out for Xbox 360 and PS3 in October.

Lara Croft's return is marked by a darker art style that brings things bang up to date, but still retains a soft spot for the series' past: “It’s an origin story,” says Crystal Dynamic global brand director Karl Stewart in our preview of the game. “That’s something we’ve never had before. It’s about keeping the character but taking it in new directions. It’s taking those iconic things and looking at them through the filter of survival.”
