E3 2012: Microsoft press conference report

If Xbox is indeed the biggest console gaming brand on the planet, then console gaming is in trouble.

It’s not enough that Don Mattrick merely sounds like Criswell, the spit-curled American TV psychic known for his demented ‘predictions’. The interactive entertainment boss left this year’s viewer thinking he knew nothing of the future at all - not that it stopped him talking about it. Had someone announced a new virtual currency called the Microsoft Lozenge, which in the absence of interesting videogames to spend it on could be sucked on to make ESPN taste like hot dogs, it wouldn’t have seemed out of place. At least we’d have had a laugh.

Sexist bigots must not define gaming

Microsoft and Sony needs to treat online bigotry as a big deal, says Helen Lewis.

“Ha ha! I bet you’ve got a really small dick,” LOL-ed the American teenage boy over the crackle of the headset and the sound of intermittent machine-gun fire.

“Actually, I haven’t got a dick,” I replied equably. This sent him off into further hysterics. “Dude, what’s wrong with you?”

“There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m a girl.”

I still remember the shocked silence that followed this, intercut with the laughter of my team-mates.
