I passionately believe in libraries and the world of library and information professionals. As the internet proliferates, information becomes more and more confusing and mobile technology is developing so rapidly, we have a real opportunity to lead.
I have worked on the frontline, in school and reference libraries, in the private IT sector and in a huge variety of management roles during my career. I have used my skills in organisational transformation, channel shift, social media, digital and electronic information management across the UK and Europe. I have also developed expertise in digital and social inclusion, e-government and e-learning services – areas that affect us all. I love developing innovative services, networks and opportunities for cooperation and partnership.
I thrive on leading rapid transformation and have an exciting vision for the future of libraries, librarians and information professionals. Transformation isn't just about new technology it’s about challenging preconceptions, finding smarter, leaner ways of working and identifying opportunities in the midst of adversity.
I have led the use of social media to promote library services in Edinburgh, as well as being an advocate in the field of information literacy. I know I can champion and harness our fabulous, transferable skills to enable us to drive the agenda. Defining our professional future reveals uncomfortable truths about CILIP. We are an amazingly talented and generous institute in danger of being left behind by the world around us. What we must offer has to be nothing less than world class.
The wealth of CILIP is you and I. If elected my goal would be to ensure that CILIP has the means to make Defining our professional future a reality. CILIP needs to grow in every sense, fearless and convincing as the voice of the value of libraries and information, accessible and inspiring to you and I as members and, as the corporate body, setting ambitious new standards so that we will never again reach a point where a majority of members feel CILIP provides quite or very poor value for money.
My contribution as a Trustee would include:

• working to make sure that CILIP's communication channels diversify and strengthen,

CILIP requires strategic leaders with forward vision, able to recruit, retain and inspire others in order to grow and flourish: I worked my way up from Career Development Group local committee member (2004-2010) to CDG President (2009), developing the activists network, the concept of CILIP new professionals and the organisation of new professionals conferences (2009, 2010) to create community, make CILIP more inclusive, ensure fair representation and unearth new leaders. I worked towards growing CDG membership and a sound, transparent governance by implementing clear election procedures, a democratic decision making system and a new financial model, and represented CDG at CILIP Policy Forum.
We need a CILIP which proactively advocates for our professional value and the services we provide: I worked on the CILIP Political Manifesto T&F Group, setting six clear priorities for the next Government, which was sent to all political parties before the national election – the first example of CILIP proactively engaging with politicians at the national level. This year I organised an international advocacy conference which brought together CILIP staff, members and international colleagues to share advocacy ideas and learn from each other’s successes.
We need a fair and inclusive CILIP which understands and recognises the value of all its members, regardless of which sector or country they are in: I have worked in public libraries, academia, the commercial and charity sectors. A committee member of CILIP International and Information Group (2006-) and member of CILIP Diversity Group, I celebrate diversity and champion equality within our workforce and the world at large, and have served on CILIP Equalities Audit T&F Group (2010).

I am delighted to put myself forward for election as CILIP Trustee. Having just retired as Director of Libraries, Learning and Culture for Cambridgeshire this provides me with the opportunity to continue to make a telling contribution to the profession.
I will bring exceptionally wide management and financial experience to the role; along with extensive contacts throughout libraries and in related fields such as government, adult learning, and culture.
Alongside 44 years in local government, 35 as a senior manager in London and Cambridgeshire, I’m also the Governor of a FE College, was a founding Board Member of Lifelong Learning UK, representing Libraries and Adult Learning, and currently Chair the Libraries, Archives and Information Services National Employers Panel, all of which has given me considerable experience of leading workforce development. A CILIP member for over 40 years I have also served as a committee member and officer on a number of Branches and Groups.
Information specialists and librarians are hugely important to our future economic well being, yet whether providing library services in deprived communities, or in industry or banking we all work under increased pressure and financial stringency, and our professional contribution is frequently unrecognised and dismissed. The “Defining our Professional Future” research has provided us with the necessary insight into members’ views, and enabled us to shape a future strategic direction.
Council now have to deliver that, and the priority must be to gain recognition and understanding of the impact we make, and at the same time increase our membership base by ensuring CILIP is relevant to all the constituency

After three decades serving on and Chairing a variety of boards, professional, educational and charitable I have learned that the effectiveness, relevance and sustainability of any organisation rely on a balance between the inflow of new ideas, active participation of stakeholders and competent governance.
Practical skills are vital too or nothing ever happens beyond endless talk. Over time I have worked to develop the skills I believe are vital for turning ideas into action. They are the ability to analyse problems and evaluate opportunities, the application of sound business practices, in depth understanding of the context in which you operate and a willingness to be flexible and open to change. I believe CILIP is in need of these skills right now.
They would be entirely useless of course without the strong conviction that the cause I was giving my time to was worthwhile. By choice the Library Association/ CILIP have absorbed a large chunk of my life. It has not all been serene. I resigned in protest at what I saw as indifference to the depredations of the Thatcher era. Since rejoining, in Council, committees, working groups, in fact, in every area of my professional life I have contributed, challenged and championed. I only do that for causes I care deeply about.

CILIP and its members face challenging and changing times. To continue to thrive and meet the needs of its members and its responsibilities to society, CILIP Trustees and staff must focus on being financially robust and retaining and attracting members. My experience in leadership roles, at work and in the profession, has given me a range of relevant skills in financial management, strategic planning, service delivery and project management, which I want to use to help CILIP achieve these goals.
I am Vice Chair of the Government Information Group with a remit to build relationships with other professional groups and to work with CILIP to develop its policy priority for information management. The first role has led to GIG hosting shared events with other groups ensuring that with limited time and resources we can be as effective as possible. The second role has enabled me to meet with a much broader range of professionals inside and outside CILIP. It is clear to me that there is tremendous potential for a much bigger CILIP community providing we create an organisation hospitable and of interest to those in new information roles.
At work I provide a knowledge management service in a government department, providing effective information to support to our senior management team as they implement new ways of working with citizens, businesses and parts of the public sector. I do this with limited resources by being flexible and imaginative in my approach and by building relationships with others inside and outside the department to meet my goals. I am able to constructively challenge colleagues and to take difficult decisions.
As a trustee I would use these experiences to help CILIP and its wider family transform itself.

Six candidates are standing for election to fill four posts on Council as Trustees of CILIP.

Ballot papers for the election will be posted on the 13 October and must be returned by the 30 November. The count will be held the 1 December and results will be announced shortly afterwards. Successful candidates will serve on Council from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2014.

From October 2011 to late 2012 CILIP is running a joint campaign with the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians (ASCEL), and the School Library Association (SLA). We want everyone to start SHOUTING ABOUT School Libraries and Schools Library Services.

We believe there’s never been a more important time to SHOUT ABOUT the importance of libraries and librarians, particularly in schools and the Schools Library Services (SLS) in local authorities around the country.
While recent media focus has been on the closure of public libraries, ASCEL, CILIP and the SLA are asking people to lend their voices to a major new campaign to lead the fight to ensure children and young people across the country have access to proper library resources whether on-site, as part of a cluster of schools or through local authorities’ school library services.
School librarians and Schools Library Services expertise are essential in helping children navigate the digital world and improve information literacy skills. What use is a classroom of PC’s connected to the internet if children don’t know how to use them effectively?
Aim
The overall aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the value of school libraries and Schools Library Services to their communities (at both primary and secondary school level) amongst key stakeholders including government, head teachers, school governors and parents.
Objectives
There are two clear themes of the overall campaign and each has their own objectives.
a) SHOUT ABOUT School Libraries
We want to convince the relevant Ministers, senior civil servants, Ofsted and local government Members and Officers to include the provision of secondary school libraries in England in Ofsted inspections
b) SHOUT ABOUT Schools Library Services
We want to expand the coverage of the Schools Library Service providing, as far as possible, availability and access to every school in the UK and so, increasing the number of pupils who will benefit from it.
We also want to convince the relevant Ministers, senior civil servants and local government Members and Officers to establish a Future Schools Library Services project.
In Wales, campaigning is also underway to make school libraries statutory.
In Scotland, school library provision is determined by the COSLA School Library Standards and school libraries are considered as part of school inspection by Education Scotland.
We want CILIP members and people everywhere to SHOUT ABOUT the value of school libraries and Schools Library Services.

The service is run by local authorities although the way it operates varies considerably. Schools subscribe to their local service on behalf of all their teachers. Lauren Smith has been elected unopposed as Vice President of CILIP.
Lauren will serve for one year from 1 January 2012. Lauren’s manifesto and supporting statements are available on the CILIP website.
Isabel Hood, Leader of Council, welcomed the appointment, “Lauren is a keen, well-known, and vocal member of CILIP who has clocked up a lot of experience in recent years through her advocacy activities. Her new role within CILIP will enable her to build upon that prior experience for the benefit of members and the wider profession.”

The Libraries APPG provides MPs and Lords with information and opportunities for debate about the role that libraries play in society and their future, with Justin Tomlinson MP as its Chair.
The APPG exists to promote and discuss themes in the wider information and knowledge sector including the impact of technology, skills and training, professional standards and broader issues.
Library and information services exist in a variety of places including schools, prisons, universities, government, private companies, law firms, colleges, health and public libraries.
By developing literacy skills, providing access to information and enabling the transfer of knowledge libraries and staff help build a fair and prosperous society. It is important they are run by skilled staff with the right expertise.
The launch
The APPG was officially launched on the 14 December.
At the launch comedian and bestselling author Tony Hawks and the Libraries Minister, Ed Vaizey MP were special guests.
Tony Hawks said: “Libraries are something I am very positive about. I was recently asked what made me proud to be British and I said it was our libraries. Free public libraries and free museums are some of the things we have been world leaders in and other countries have followed us.”
Libraries Minister Ed Vaizey commented: “I think it’s very important that we have a core library service and professional librarians have to be at the centre of that. I think libraries are here so stay and every community will have a library at their heart, and long may that be so.”

CILIP supports the call for statutory school libraries
In September 2009 Council unanimously approved the recommendation from the Policy Forum that CILIP should endorse the Campaign for the book’s call to "make school libraries, run by properly qualified staff statutory and sign the Number 10 petition to that effect".
CILIP signed the Number 10 Downing Street petition. The e-petition to make school libraries statutory has now ended and was signed by 5,707 people. The Government's response to the petition stated that it had no plans to change legislation to make school libraries statutory.

This is a statement from CILIP issued in February 2011. It sets out the core entitlements that every child, school's teaching team and wider school community should expect to receive. It provides an overarching case for a properly resourced, professionally staff school library.
The statement came out of the Making school libraries statutory campaign. It was written by the Youth and School Libraries Joint Committee and the School Libraries Group.

Life membership of CILIP is open to retired members over the age of 60 with a total of 20 years in membership, of which the last 10 years should be continuous immediately before application.
The one off fee for Life Membership is £575.00.

Biography
Director of Culture, Libraries and Lifelong Learning for Newcastle City Council.
Before moving to Newcastle in 2002 Tony worked for Gateshead Library and Arts Service, as Assistant Director, and latterly as Head of Libraries, Arts and Information. Before that he had a variety of roles with Derbyshire Library Service, from Trainee to District Librarian.
Public library priorities in Newcastle have been to work with colleagues to modernise services, and to create a positive profile for the Library Service. The service is now held in high regard by both the Council and external stakeholders.
One of Tony’s major projects has been the development of the new Newcastle City Library through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) route. The Council opened its new city library, with a very positive, and sustained public response, in June 2009.
Tony was President of the Society of Chief Librarians from 2007 until 2009. He currently chairs SCL’s Books and reading group. He was a member of the former Advisory Council on Libraries, and a Board member for the 2008/9 Public Libraries Modernisation Review.
Outside of his Newcastle role, Tony is also the inaugural chair of the Durham Cultural Partnership.

Biography
Liz is Director of Library and Information Services at Teesside University. Previously Liz was Associate Director (Services and Operations) in Information and Learning Services at the University of Salford. She has held departmental senior management positions at East London and London South Bank Universities and has also worked at Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan, Lincoln and Manchester Metropolitan Universities.
Liz is a Fellow both of CILIP and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).
Liz has been Chair of the University, College and Research Group and President of the Career Development Group and has represented these Groups on CILIP’s Council and Policy Forum. She was a member of the Defining Our Professional Future Steering Group. Liz is currently a Trustee and Executive Board Member of SCONUL, the Society of College, National and University Libraries.

Biography
Prior to entering the library and information profession Katy had over 15 years experience in the IT industry, working in local and central government and as a consultant. She progressed from programmer to Project Manager. Latterly she led mixed economy teams of civil servants, consultants and private sector staff delivering IT systems for DSS. This gave her a lasting interest in management issues.
Katy then went to Manchester Metropolitan University, undertaking the BA (Hons) Library and Information Management degree. After graduation she worked in the Lancashire County Schools Library service as temporary Project Loans Team Leader. The opportunity arose to return to Manchester Metropolitan for one semester as a lecturer on Information Users and Providers. This renewed Katy’s interest in LIS education and the changes in the profession brought about by advances in technology.
Katy then moved to Herefordshire College of Technology where she remained for several years, becoming Learning Resources Centres Manager. She became increasingly involved in information literacy teaching for students at all levels . She believes everybody needs these skills as information is more easily available in a wider range of media than ever before and that librarians and information professionals are ideally skilled and trained to deliver training in, and development of, these skills.
Katy was Project Manager for the Study Methods and Information Literacy Exemplars blended learning project at University of Worcester, part of the JISC RePRODUCE programme. She is currently completing a consultancy with Glasgow Caledonian University on SMILE.
She believes there is a growing need for advocacy and a strong unifying presence on behalf of a varied and diverse profession and wants that to be CILIP. For that reason she decided to stand for Council.
