New professionals who are members of CILIP can now submit an application to become the first winner of the Aspire Award in memory of Bob McKee. The award was established in memory of CILIP’s CEO, who died in August 2010. It will help new professionals develop through networking at UK and international events.
The successful applicant will receive a full residential place, and support for travel to and from the venue, at CILIP’s flagship event Umbrella 2011. This will take place at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield on 12-13 July.
Applicants must be members of CILIP and have joined the profession in the past five years. They must be registered for Chartership, intend to Charter in the next two years, or be newly Chartered in the past year.
In addition, applicants should be “first timers” at Umbrella and agree to produce a report on their experiences at the event for possible publication in CILIP Update magazine.
To enter, applicants must produce a clear, concise and reflective piece of writing of no more than 500 words that identifies their key ambition and overall aim in applying for the Aspire Award. Their entry should demonstrate the benefits of their attendance at Umbrella to them as an individual and to the wider profession.
Key assessment criteria will be the identification of an ambition or overall aim that attendance at Umbrella will help realise, and the demonstration of a definable contribution to the library profession. Consideration will also be given to how an applicant’s aspiration relates to Bob McKee’s core belief in the role of libraries as a means to a fairer and more prosperous society.
Entries must be made by 5pm on Thursday 9 June.
Entries will be judged by a small panel of CILIP staff and activists, in co-operation with Bob McKee’s family. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 22 June.
The winner will be interviewed for an article in the July issue of CILIP Update, which will be published on 7 July and circulated at Umbrella.

CILIP is delighted to announce that Sue Roe, Children’s Services Librarian at Wirral Libraries and CILIP member, will be funded to attend the 2011 World Library and Information Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 13-18 August.
From a very strong field of candidates Sue Roe was the successful applicant for the full award.
“I am delighted to be attending this conference and contribute to the sharing of knowledge and expertise between library professionals from different parts of the world." said Sue, "I also look forward to beginning work with international colleagues on IFLA’s Libraries for Children and Young Adults Committee.”
The 2011 World Library and Information Congress is the 77th annual conference organised by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
The award was made by CILIP’s International Board. Small partial grants have also been agreed to enable some CILIP-nominated IFLA activists to attend the conference.
All grant recipients will write conference reports which will be available on the CILIP website later this year.
The 2012 IFLA Conference will take place in Helsinki, Finland from 11-16 August with the theme: "Libraries Now! - Inspiring, Surprising, Empowering". Grant information will be available on the CILIP website in 2012.

Archives: Principles and practices by Laura A. Millar will be awarded the Waldo Gifford Leland Award and Digital Curation: A how-to-do-it manual by Ross Harvey will be awarded the Preservation Publication Award at the Society of American Archivists awards ceremony in Chicago in August.
Archives: Principles and practices was praised by the Waldo Gifford Leland Award subcommittee for its “clear, concise, and engaging writing style”. The committee also stated that the book “will be of great usefulness to archival educators and their students, to practitioners wishing to stay current with archival thinking, and to all readers seeking an overview of the archival enterprise.”
The book, written by Laura A. Millar, is an authoritative handbook that provides practical guidance in the successful establishment and operation of an archival facility built on sound principles.
Lesley M. Richmond, Director of Archive Services at the University of Glasgow said in Library Review that Archives: Principles and practices “…is an excellent guide to principles and practices for archive management around the globe.” She went on to say that the book was “…not just informative but also interesting, challenging and thought provoking.”
Digital Curation: A how-to-do-it-manual was praised by the Preservation Publication Award subcommittee for its “excellent synthesis of current thinking in the field of digital curation, presented in a way that will make it easy for archivists to use the ideas to improve preservation of the electronic records in their collections.”
Written by international authority Ross Harvey, Digital Curation: A how-to-do-it-manual is the first one-stop resource in digital curation, and guides readers to understand and make the best use of the wide-ranging combinations of strategies, technological approaches, and activities that apply to this rapidly-emerging field.
Robin Yeates, E-library Systems Officer at London Borough of Barnet Libraries, said the following about the book in Program: electronic library and information systems, “…the author has masterfully brought together a great deal of knowledge around a very important topic for many archivists and information staff. A report documenting the findings of an analysis of the effect of the Learning Resource Services (LRS) on student achievement and retention. The report concluded that:
• The higher the LRS membership to any student cohort, the higher the success and retention rate for that group.
• LRS contributes to success across all age groups.
• There is a significant success rate for A2/AS level students (attaining grades A – E) who were LRS members compared to non LRS members
• Generally, the LRS has contributed to increased retention rates across all departments compared to LRS non members.

This study provided empirical evidence that academic libraries contribute to the reputation of universities. The function and influence of the library was found to extend beyond its own departmental limits.

This article offers a framework for understanding the basic structures beneath our assertions of value so that we can communicate more effectively with those on whom we depend for resources and those who depend on us for services.
8. Oakley, S., 2007. Weaving reading for pleasure into the Skills for Life adult literacy curriculum. In Hamilton, M., Davies, P., and James, K., eds. Practitioners leading research. London: National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy
A theme that emerged from this research was the importance of collaboration between tutors and library staff in promoting reading; effective collaboration means the enjoyable aspects of reading for pleasure aren’t ignored and the positive results outlines above can be achieved.
The research concludes that “the support, expertise and resources of the library service” make linking reading for pleasure activities to the National Literacy Curriculum straightforward.

CILIP accredits undergraduate and postgraduate library and information courses in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Successful completion of an accredited course will help you get professional posts in the UK and elsewhere in the world. It will also enable you to register to Charter with CILIP.
The primary purpose of accreditation is to confirm the relevance of the course to current and developing practice in librarianship and information science, including in very specialist sectors, and thus improve your employability. Courses are assessed using the Accreditation Handbook and the CILIP Body of Professional Knowledge.

If you have experience or training as a mentor you can register straight away. CILIP Mentoring Workshops are being run by PTEG across the UK.
Support for mentors does not end with the initial training, the Personnel,Training and Education group organizes the Mentor Support Network.
Additional support is available through the mentor discussion list which, to facilitate open discussion, is restricted to registered mentors. This acts as a forum for you to share, and resolve, issues arising from your mentoring work with candidates for the range of CILIP qualifications. Details of joining the list are included in information sent to newly registered mentors.
As well as mentor training there are opportunities to attend an introduction to mentoring within CILIP's Framework of Qualifications featuring this slide presentation (352KB).
Being a mentor entails commitment and responsibility however it will contribute to your professional development, working towards Revalidation and Fellowship, furthermore it will broaden your own network.
If you would like to participate as a Mentor please complete an application form (Word, 97KB). In the statement you can say how many candidates you would be willing to take on, if you prefer them to be from the same sector or the same organization as you. More details including the Mentor contract are in the Mentor scheme guidelines.
If you have registered as a mentor or are applying to be a mentor you should read the Mentor scheme guidelines (120.0KB) closely.

Invitation to Tender: CILIP Carnegie Greenaway Research Scoping Exercise
Following a research grant from the Carnegie UK Trust, CILIP would like to research the overall impact of the CILIP shadowing scheme on children’s lives as well as reading habits.
Proposals for this tender must be submitted via email to ckg@cilip.org.uk no later than 4pm Monday 9 May 2011.
Project outline
The key items we would like to assess during the research project are in terms of the impact of shadowing on:
• Individual children’s reading habits
• Benefits to children participating in the scheme
• Benefits to group leaders (librarian’s) managing reading groups
• Effectiveness of shadowing as an advocacy tool for school and public librarians
Methodology
• Working with a database of info about shadowing groups
• Liaising with CKG development officer to identify a broad range of shadowing groups from across the UK to potentially interview and/or survey.
Main output
A scoping report to inform future web developments and the shape of the shadowing scheme to maximise participation. The report will lead to a bid for research funding from the Carnegie UK Trust.

Melissa Wyatt is the Library and Information Manager at the Royal Town Planning Institute where she has ensured that the library service is the focus for knowledge management for the organisation and is recognised as an important resource for the planning profession. A university placement provided me with an opportunity to catalogue a unique collection of Rudyard Kipling manuscripts and books, one of my best student memories.
Personal circumstances prevented me from completing the course but I was determined to pursue my career in collections management so I used my experience and knowledge to work in the music library at Lewes and then at the Lewes Barbican House Museum. At the same time I completed my degree as an Art History Bachelors with the Open University.
I had the opportunity to experience an intriguing variety of information work: the Royal Society, cataloguing historical documents in German, Latin and French; project work at the London Underground Library, and then becoming Local Studies Librarian at Lewisham. This was not just local studies but community librarianship, reaching all sections of the local community by exploiting the collection.
Whilst working in library management posts, I have managed information in subjects as diverse as town and country planning, architecture, history, transport, family history and art. I have experience in running information and library services as well as specialising in research and librarianship within a museum and heritage environment.
A diploma in Business helped me to focus, a degree in Library and Art Studies helped me to specialise and working and studying simultaneously helped me begin the path to Chartership.

Plaid Cymru have launched their party manifesto, which includes a promise to support the strategic development framework for Welsh libraries and a continued promise to fund the modernisation of local libraries.
The Plaid Cymru Manifesto reads: “We believe that libraries must inspire people to enjoy reading, improve their knowledge, develop their skills and participate in their respective communities. We will support the implementation of the strategic development framework for Welsh libraries and we will continue to fund the modernisation of local libraries.”
CILIP Cymru Wales recently wrote a letter to all Assembly Members and Welsh Members of Parliament to raise concerns about the future of libraries in Wales.
“We welcome this pledge of support from Plaid Cymru,” said Lloyd Ellis, Chairman of CILIP Cymru Wales, “and we look forward to continuing our work with all parties in Wales to ensure libraries continue to develop and provide vital services to their communities. Libraries make a crucial contribution to building a strong and prosperous Wales.”
Karen Gibbins, Vice Chair of CILIP Cymru Wales added, “It is encouraging to note that Plaid Cymru realise there are benefits to a strategic approach to library services in Wales and that they pledge continued support for the work that has already begun.”
