The ethics of game addiction

QWOP maker Bennett Foddy on why addiction in games isn’t necessarily bad, and why Tiny Tower is one of his most hated games.

Bennett Foddy detailed the mechanics of addiction as it relates to game design to the audience at Develop Liverpool today. “For game developers, addictiveness is a design goal,” he said, before admitting that an addictive game isn’t necessarily bad. “But not everyone addicted to videogames is enjoying themselves, and lives can go awry,” he warned.

Microsoft acquires video search firm VideoSurf

Microsoft has spent a reported $100 million on Israeli start-up VideoSurf, saying its video search technology will "augment the Xbox 360 ecosystem." VideoSurf's technology can "see" individual frames inside videos, with facial and audio recognition, which Microsoft intends to use to further beef up discoverability on Xbox Live. The Xbox 360 dashboard update, due on December 6, can be fully controlled by voice, with Bing integration allowing users to search for games, music and video content from a variety of providers.

The trio behind YouTube sensation Yogscast have said in a statement that they are "disappointed" by allegations made about their conduct at last weekend's Minecon event by Markus "Notch" Persson, head of Minecraft developer Mojang. Earlier this week Persson said he would not be working again with the Yogscast team, slamming them in a series of tweets for acting "like total spoiled divas nonstop" and concluding: "They're an isolated island of egos."

Region Specific: A French toast

The city of lights is home to a group of developers who plan to take the ‘French touch’ to the rest of the world.

We’re fortunate enough to have visited quite a few game and technology development studios, and we’ve noticed many repeating themes. Desks covered with toys and walls plastered in concept art are one thing, but one less explicable trend is a common move towards the upper floors of whichever building houses them.

Opinion: Games can't tell stories

Videogames are not a storytelling medium, asserts Tadhg Kelly, no matter what people say.

I’m discussing LA Noire with an industry friend. I say I find it simplistic, unfair and like playing Deal Or No Deal. There’s no strategy. My companion says he thinks it represents a step forward for storytelling, and that my cynicism perhaps indicates that it’s so good that it’s beyond most players.

This makes me pause for a moment. I ask what he means and he says it plainly: gamers are not good enough for a game such as this. They don’t get it.

Report: Canadian retailer merges new and used sections

EB Games, the Canadian subsidiary of US retail chain GameStop, has reportedly merged its used and new game sections, with minimal distinction between which is which and new copies of games hidden behind pre-owned ones. An employee informed Kotaku that staff have been told to put the same, white price stickers on both new and used games; in the past, pre-owned games have carried yellow price tags. Although one employee got in touch with Kotaku to dispute the claim, scores more have verified it, and the retailer is yet to comment.
