Pro feedback delays Counter-Strike beta

Valve writer Chet Faliszek has admitted that the company delayed the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive multiplayer beta following feedback from professional players who have been helping test the game. The beta for Counter-Strike's eagerly-awaited return was initially planned to launch last month, but in a video interview with ESEA News, reported by CVG, Faliszek said players had fed back a list of bug reports and feature suggestions that, were they not addressed, would mean the beta would fail in its bid to assess the game's netcode.

Gabrielle’s Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix review

Natsume’s primitive WiiWare dancing game is definitely more trick than treat.

Dancing is optional in Gabrielle’s Ghostly Groove: Monster Mix, but that’s hardly surprising. Most Wii rhythm action games simplify their inputs to the point where you can play them by just sitting back on a sofa and shaking the remote gently to the beat. What’s surprising is that rhythm is also optional. During some of the later levels, you might get a slightly higher score by moving in time with the music rather than just swinging your arm in endless circles, but the difference will likely be measured in a single point or two.

Ubisoft cool on Google+

Ubisoft appears unlikely to release its newly announced social games on Google+ due to a decline in active users on Google's social network. Last week Ubisoft announced three new social games based on TV shows, and a fourth to be developed by Loot Drop, the studio run by Brenda Brathwaite and Doom designer John Romero. Speaking to Inside Social Games Chris Early, VP of digital publishing, insisted Ubisoft was "not a one-platform publisher," but said Google+ needed to maintain a steady flow of users for it to be a viable option.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge review

WayForward’s genie has just appeared on iOS – but is she still magic?

WayForward’s cultish charmer makes the hop from DSiWare to iOS by breaking a couple of rules. Firstly, it runs inside a tacky blue border, most likely due to fuzzy SD art assets that were initially designed with Nintendo’s lower-resolution screen in mind. Secondly, it bundles the paid version together with the free demo, requiring a mildly intrusive in-app purchase once the adventure is really starting to get moving. Stick with it, though.

Tapjoy to launch iOS app marketplace

Mobile monetisation and analytics firm Tapjoy is to launch an iOS software marketplace of its own, though it insists it is not doing so to escape Apple's new advertising policies. Tapjoy fell foul of a change to Apple's policy which prohibited apps the practice of "pay-per-install". Tapjoy's core business model involves advertising one app within another; when the new app is downloaded and played the user is rewarded with virtual currency in the game they were playing before.

Metrics versus intuitive design - FIGHT!

What's best? Old-fashioned craft or game dev's dirtiest word? Neither, argues PopCap's Giordano Contestabile, because it's a false dichotomy.

For a long time, the game industry functioned on a predictable model that changed little over the years. A game was developed over a long period of time, then went gold and was handed off to a publishing team tasked with launching and marketing it as effectively as possible. Efforts then shifted to the next game, and the process started anew, becoming more refined with every product cycle.
