Yakuza series ships 5 million

Sega confirms that it has shipped more than five million copies of the series since the first Yakuza made its debut for PlayStation 2 in 2005. Shipments of Yakuza Of The End, the zombie spinoff that was finally released in Japan two weeks ago after Sega chose to delay its March release following the March earthquake and tsunami, have already passed 400,000 units.

Avalanche interview

The Just Cause developer on heading to New York and next gen games.

While Far Cry may be synonymous with open-world tropical playgrounds, spare a thought for Stockholm-based Avalanche Studios whose Just Cause titles provide destructive holidaying destinations of equal appeal. Just Cause sweetens the deal with a grappling hook, too. Now Avalanche is expanding its operation to the US, opening a studio in New York and starting a new project.

Touch Grind BMX review

Expertly pitched controls will keep you coming back.

Digital storefronts are having an inexorable effect on the common videogame: names are ever-blander. Touch Grind BMX? At least it's not called Angry Bikes.

The game belies such drabness. With one finger on the handlebars and another on the rear wheel, you guide a riderless bike through linear courses filled with jumps that may be gnarly. The smooth framerate make things very easy on the eye, and when the perspective starts shifting the camera doesn't miss a thing. The magic, of course, is in the tricks.

PS3 hacker expects jail sentence

While the bulk of media attention was focused on George "Geohot" Hotz, who settled out of court with Sony in March, Alexander "Graf Chokolo" Egorenkov admits he is now facing jail time after running out of money to fund his fight against Sony. Egorenkov has focused on restoring Linux to the PlayStation 3, after Sony removed the feature in a firmware update, ironically to deter hackers. "No money left anymore," he writes on his blog. "Going to jail soon probably because I cannot pay court costs. But I'm ready to stand up for everything I said and go to jail for that too. It's not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off that easily. I'm ready to go to jail for my beliefs and my principles."

Molyneux admits Kinect problems

Speaking to Gaming Union, the Fable creator admits Microsoft's Xbox 360 motion sensor poses problems to developers used to working with traditional controllers. "I'll admit Kinect has got some problems," he said. "Without a thumb stick, navigation is a real problem. You haven't got any buttons, so ordering the player to do something can be somewhat of a problem. But what Kinect does have is a great sense of freedom and emotion. So that's what we've tried to do with Fable: The Journey."

Miyamoto: price may limit Wii U power

Much remains unknown about the precise capabilities of Nintendo's new console, unveiled at E3 earlier this month. In an interview with GameSpot, Shigeru Miyamoto admits that Nintendo's desire to release Wii U at an appealing price point may see that power limited. "We're trying to find the right balance between the CPU and the GPU, and bringing all of that together with the ability to take advantage of the HD capabilities of the system," he explains. "We're very sensitive, of course, to do all of this at an appropriate price. So I don't know that we would be able to sit here and say that it's going to necessarily dramatically outperform the systems that are out now. It's part of the balance that we strike in terms of trying to find entertainment that is new and unique."

US Parents want universal ratings system

A survey of 2,300 parents finds that the majority would like to see a universal ratings system covering games, movies, TV, music and websites. The researchers say: "Given that we are well on the way to digital convergence, where one can watch movies, television shows or videogames all on the same device, it seems that the time may be right to begin seriously considering taking this next step to improve media ratings."

Binary Domain trailer and release date

Former Edge columnist Toshihiro Nagoshi and his Yakuza team are currently at work on Binary Domain, a squad-based thirdperson shooter which, the below story trailer confirms, will be released in February 2012. The team's work on recent spin-off Yakuza Of The End will have provided valuable experience with shooters, but our principal concern is how Nagoshi can reflect his love of whiskey in the game's sci-fi setting.
